Dynamical relations for left ventricular ejection - Flow rate, momentum, force and impulse

An investigation was carried out to quantitatively evaluate left ventricular volume flow rate, momentum, force and impulse derived from application of conservation principles for mass and momentum of blood within the ventricle during the ejection phase. An automated digital image processing system was developed and applied to left ventricular angiograms which are computer processed and analyzed frame by frame to determine the dynamical relations by numerical methods. The initial experience with force and impulse has indicated that neither quantity seemed to be a sensitive indicator of coronary artery disease as evaluated by qualitative angiography for the particular patient group studied. Utilization of the dynamical relations in evaluating human left ventricular performance requires improved means of measurement and interpretation of clinical studies.

Coma morphology and dust-emission pattern of periodic comet Halley. III - Additional high-resolution images taken in 1910

High-resolution photographic images of comet Halley obtained at Lick, Helwan, Lowell, and Vienna observatories during May-June 1910 are analyzed using the image-processing algorithm of Larson and Sekanina (1984). The results are presented in tables and compared with analyses of Mt. Wilson plates for the same period (Sekanina and Larson, 1984), and good general agreement is noted. Consideration is given to the position of the rotation pole, features indicative of the nucleus spin rate, the spokelike structure observed on May 21-22, and the expanding gas halo.

Automated mesoscale wind fields derived from GOES satellite imagery

A new multispectral image-processing system for extracting mesoscale wind fields automatically from sequences of GOES imagery is described. This system can produce equivalent or superior cloud-wind estimates compared to the time-consuming manual methods used on various interactive meteorological processing systems. Analysis of automated mesoscale cloud winds yield an estimated random error value of less than 1 m/s and produces both regional and mesoscale vector wind-field structure and divergence patterns that are consistent in time and highly correlated with subsequent severe thunderstorm development. As an example, the system is here applied to SMS II five-minute imagery from April 24, 1975 and the results are compared with manually obtained ones.

Thematic Mapper geometric correction performance evaluation

The present paper provides a performance evaluation of geometric correction in the Thematic Mapper Image Processing System (TIPS). TIPS forms a part of NASA's Thematic Mapper (TM) data processing facility. During a TM Research and Development period which continues through 1984, the geometric accuracy of TIPS is currently being evaluated. A description is given of TIPS geometric correction system, taking into account a TIPS overview and the Thematic Mapper Control Point Library Build (TCL). TCL generates control point chips which are stored in a library for subsequent use in the Thematic Mapper Archive Generation (TAG). Methods for measuring accuracy are discussed, giving attention to error estimation and direct measurement. A temporal registration evaluation from error estimation is considered along with a temporal evaluation from direct measurement, and a geodetic correction evaluation.

Comparative evaluations of the geodetic accuracy and cartographic potential of Landsat-4 and Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper image data

A Landsat Image Data Quality Analysis (LIDQA) Program is conducted by NASA. One part of this program forms studies which are being performed with the objective to evaluate the geometric fidelity of Landsat-4 and Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) data in computer tape (CCT-pt) formats. It is pointed out that the Landsat-4 and Landsat-5 systems provide image data of significantly better geometric fidelity than were obtained from the earlier Landsat missions. Attention is given to the factors which influence the geometric fidelity of the Landsat TM data, the study areas and data sets, the rectification procedures, the rectification of Landsat-4 TM data and comparisons of the Scrounge and the TM Image Processing System (TIPS), the rectification of system and scene corrected Landsat-5 data processed on TIPS, and the cartographic potential of TM data.

Thematic Mapper radiometric correction research and development results and performance

The present paper has the objective to discuss three modifications made to the Thematic Mapper Image Processing System (TIPS) radiometric correction process during the R&D period, before turnover of the Landsat Ground Segment to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The R&D period was to enhance the correction performance of the ground processing of Thematic Mapper (TM) data, taking into account the correction of sensor anomalies. In the context of a brief review of the major steps in TM radiometric correction, a description is provided of the approaches employed to overcome the effects of the Landsat-5 light leak and the saturated calibration lamp states. Attention is also given to scene content correction limitations, and a performance bench mark.

Landsat-4 Thematic Mapper scene characteristics of a suburban and rural area

The Thematic Mapper (TM) sensor, which is carried by the Landsat-4 and Landsat-5 satellites, represents the latest generation of an earth resource scanner system. TM applications range from determining the extent and changes of land cover to estimating agricultural yields. The TM has improvements over the Multispectral Scanner (MSS) with respect to spatial resolution, spectral regions, and radiometry. The present paper is concerned with two major objectives related to the analysis of the Landsat TM. One of these objectives is related to an evaluation of the utility of TM in the discrimination of surface cover. In connection with the second objective, an evaluation was conducted of the utility of selected image processing procedures to enhance the capability of Landsat TM to map land cover. It was found that TM data may be used for discriminating smaller targets, such as agricultural fields and city blocks, than previously obtainable with MSS data.

Digital fringe reduction techniques applied to the measurement of three-dimensional transonic flow fields

A system for digital inteferogram evaluation based on an image-processing system connected to a host computer has been implemented. The system supports one- and two-dimensional interferogram evaluations. Interferograms are digitized, enhanced, and segmented. The fringe coordinates are extracted, and the fringes are represented as polygon data structures. Fringe numbering and fringe interpolation modules are implemented. The system supports editing and interactive features as well as graphic visualization. An application of the system to the evaluation of double exposure interferograms from the transonic flow field around a helicopter blade and the reconstruction of the 3-D flow field are given.

Motion analysis report

Human motion analysis is the task of converting actual human movements into computer readable data. Such movement information may be obtained though active or passive sensing methods. Active methods include physical measuring devices such as goniometers on joints of the body, force plates, and manually operated sensors such as a Cybex dynamometer. Passive sensing de-couples the position measuring device from actual human contact. Passive sensors include Selspot scanning systems (since there is no mechanical connection between the subject's attached LEDs and the infrared sensing cameras), sonic (spark-based) three-dimensional digitizers, Polhemus six-dimensional tracking systems, and image processing systems based on multiple views and photogrammetric calculations.

A modeling analysis program for the JPL table mountain Io sodium cloud

A data quality review for the entire set of the 1981 Region B/C images has been completed and is presented. The review indicates that almost all images are of sufficient quality to be valuable in our analysis of this data set. Five data-correlation studies for the same data set have also been completed and are useful in classifying and studying the sodium cloud morphology and its interactions with solar radiation pressure and the plasma torus. Additional progress in developing new image processing techniques and in improving the Io sodium cloud model is also discussed.

PIFEX: An advanced programmable pipelined-image processor

PIFEX is a pipelined-image processor being built in the JPL Robotics Lab. It will operate on digitized raster-scanned images (at 60 frames per second for images up to about 300 by 400 and at lesser rates for larger images), performing a variety of operations simultaneously under program control. It thus is a powerful, flexible tool for image processing and low-level computer vision. It also has applications in other two-dimensional problems such as route planning for obstacle avoidance and the numerical solution of two-dimensional partial differential equations (although its low numerical precision limits its use in the latter field). The concept and design of PIFEX are described herein, and some examples of its use are given.

Cytogenetic analyses of peripheral lymphocytes subjected to simulated solar flare radiation

Solar flare protons share many radiological health characteristics of the inner Van Allen Belt protons, and both types of radiation pose serious dangers to a number of missions planned. It is appropriate to evaluate crew dose determination procedures in terms of the type of radiation responsible for the major part of the projected exposure, i.e., protons in the neighborhood of 100 MeV. Monitoring chromosome abnormalities in peripheral lymphocytes is one method to determine an individual's accumulated radiation dosage. Cell culture and harvest is a relatively simple procedure and is well within the capabilities of a station health facility, but the evaluation of prepared microscopic slides is a time consuming and subjective procedure. This project is part of an effort to demonstrate the utility of automated image processing and evaluation procedures in expediting dose evaluation. The initial goal of this project is to produce a set of reference chromosome spreads produced from control lymphocytes and from lymphocytes exposed in whole blood to protons or gamma rays. The results of manual and automated aberration scoring will ultimately be compared to test for systematic differences between the two evaluation procedures and between the two radiation qualities. Proton irradiations are performed at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Cyclotron Facility. Proton dosimetry is supplemented by TLD packets from and by assay of short-lived proton activation products in the irradiation blood samples.
