Differential analysis for the turbulent boundary layer on a compressor blade element (including boundary-layer separation)

A two-dimensional differential analysis is developed to approximate the turbulent boundary layer on a compressor blade element with strong adverse pressure gradients, including the separated region with reverse flow. The predicted turbulent boundary layer thicknesses and velocity profiles are in good agreement with experimental data for a cascade blade, even in the separated region.

Wind speeds in lower atmosphere of Venus: Status report on possible measurement via differential VLBI tracking of entry probes

The potential of very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) is examined for use in the determination of wind speeds in Venus' lower atmosphere via the differential tracking of entry probes. A simplified mathematical model is presented in detail. An incomplete error analysis based on this model permits an educated guess to be made: an uncertainty in wind speed determination of no more than about 100/t m/sec, where t l is the corresponding time resolution in seconds, is an achievable goal, without the use of transponders on the miniprobes. If transponders are available on all probes, there should be little difficulty in estimating wind speeds with useful precision.

Differential phase shift keyed communication system

A communication system using differential phase-shift-keying (DPSK) transmits and receives binary data without requiring timing or phase reference signals. The system encodes and modulates the data at the transmitter, and decodes and demodulates the data at the receiver, without ambiguity as to the data content.

Differential phonograms

A new noise measuring method is outlined that is based on electronic analysis of the radiated noise. Non-relevant components are suppressed, while the differential phonogram displayed on the oscilloscope screen discloses the information carrying components. It allows low skilled operators to perform: (1) correct alignment of equipment; (2) detection of incipient failure; and (3) checking of prototypes.

Infrared differential absorption for atmospheric pollutant detection

Progress made in the generation of tunable infrared radiation and its application to remote pollutant detection by the differential absorption method are summarized. It is recognized that future remote pollutant measurements depended critically on the availability of high energy tunable transmitters. Futhermore, due to eye safety requirements, the transmitted frequency must lie in the 1.4 micron to 13 micron infrared spectral range.

Power-spectral-density relationship for retarded differential equations

The power spectral density (PSD) relationship between input and output of a set of linear differential-difference equations of the retarded type with real constant coefficients and delays is discussed. The form of the PSD relationship is identical with that applicable to unretarded equations. Since the PSD relationship is useful if and only if the system described by the equations is stable, the stability must be determined before applying the PSD relationship. Since it is sometimes difficult to determine the stability of retarded equations, such equations are often approximated by simpler forms. It is pointed out that some common approximations can lead to erroneous conclusions regarding the stability of a system and, therefore, to the possibility of obtaining PSD results which are not valid.

Excess lead in 'rusty rock' 66095 and implications for an early lunar differentiation

Apollo 16 breccia 66095 contains a remarkably high amount of lead (15 parts per million), 85 percent of which is not supported by uranium and thorium in the rock. An acid leach experiment coupled with separate analyses of the whole rock and mineral fractions for uranium, thorium, and lead indicate that the excess lead has a lunar source and was apparently introduced about 4.0 b.y. ago. The data also suggest that a major lunar crustal differentiation occurred about 4.47 b.y. ago.

Coincidence measurement of the fully differential cross section for atomic-field bremsstrahlung

A coincidence measurement was made of the absolute cross section for electron-atomic-field bremsstrahlung, differential in photon energy, photon-emission angle, and electron scattering angle. The incident electron energy was 140 keV and the scattering materials were thin films of aluminum and gold. The data are compared to the theoretical calculations of Elwert and Haug and of Bethe and Heitler. Both theories give generally satisfactory agreement for aluminum. The Elwert-Haug theory is somewhat more accurate for gold.

Behavior near constant solutions of functional differential equations

Techniques have been developed to determine in a systematic way the local behavior near constant solutions. Local integral manifolds play a very important role in this development, as they have also for ordinary differential equations. An attempt is made to indicate a few more applications of these methods to some problems in bifurcation in the spirit of Sotomayor (to appear) and to a growth model of Cooke and Yorke (to appear). It is also shown how to prove a theorem on stability under constantly acting disturbances using these methods.

Strongly differentiated material in high-inclination and retrograde orbits

Two definitive spectra of strongly differentiated meteors are discussed. The meteors entered the earth's atmosphere at velocities greater than 40 km/sec from high-inclination and retrograde orbits. Both were magnesium-calcium particles, and their spectra show them to be highly deficient in iron and sodium. The moon and the asteroids have been discussed as sources of such calcium-rich achondrites, but these sources give low or intermediate geocentric velocities. Long-period comets and meteoroids of probable cometary origin are the only objects now known to have orbits similar to the orbits of these two meteors.

Perturbed nonlinear differential equations

For perturbed nonlinear systems, a norm, other than the supremum norm, is introduced on some spaces of continuous functions. This makes possible the study of new types of behavior. A study is presented on a perturbed nonlinear differential equation defined on a half line, and the existence of a family of solutions with special boundedness properties is established. The ideas developed are applied to the study of integral manifolds, and examples are given.

Algebraic Riccati equations in zero-sum differential games

The procedure for finding the closed-loop Nash equilibrium solution of two-player zero-sum linear time-invariant differential games with quadratic performance criteria and classical information pattern may be reduced in most cases to the solution of an algebraic Riccati equation. Based on the results obtained by Willems, necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of solutions to these equations are derived, and explicit conditions for a scalar example are given.

Results of differential elevon/aileron deflection for lateral control optimization and elevon hinge moment investigations on an 0.015-scale model (49-0) of the space shuttle orbiter in the NASA/Langley Research Center 8 foot TPT (OA116)

Aerodynamic investigations were conducted in a transonic pressure tunnel on an 0.015 scale model of the space shuttle orbiter. Major test objectives were to determine: (1) transonic differential elevon/aileron lateral control optimization; (2) transonic elevon hinge moments; (3) transonic effects of the baseline 6 inch elevon/elevon and elevon/fuselage gaps; and (4) transonic effects of the short OMS pods. Six-component aerodynamic force and moment, and elevon hinge moment data, were recorded over an angle-of-attack range form -2 to +22 degrees.

Studies of the differential absorption rocket experiment

Investigations of the ionosphere, in the rocket program of the Aeronomy Laboratory, include a propagation experiment, the data from which may be analyzed in several modes. This report considers in detail the differential absorption experiment. The sources of error and limitations of sensitivity are discussed. Methods of enhancing the performance of the experiment are described. Some changes have been made in the system and the improvement demonstrated. Suggestions are made for further development of the experiment.

Differential elevon effectiveness lateral control optimization and elevon hinge moment investigation on a 0.015 scale space shuttle orbiter model 49-0 (140A/B/C modified) in the AECD VKF wind tunnel A (0A115)

Experimental aerodynamic investigations were conducted in the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) Von Karman Facility Tunnel A on a scale model of the space shuttle orbiter. The objectives of this test were: (1) determine supersonic differential elevon/aileron lateral control optimization, (2) determine supersonic elevon hinge moments, (3) determine the supersonic effects of the new baseline 6-inch elevon/elevon and elevon/fuselage gaps, and 4) determine the supersonic effects of the new short (VL70-008410) OMS pods. Six-component aerodynamic force, moment, and elevon hinge moment data were recorded.
