Aeronautics research and technology. A review of proposed reductions in the FY 1983 NASA program

Reductions in the Fiscal Year 1983 program from the original proposal to the levels of the appropriation request submitted to Congress are reviewed. The request asked for an assessment of the national criticality of the excluded programs and, for each one, the risk (probability of success) associated with achieving the objectives sought and the degree to which it might be assumed by the private sector. Based on this request, a charge comprising an assessment of those aeronautics projects excluded from the FY 1983 budget request to Congress, the likelihood that industry would undertake them, the impact of their not being done, and the more general question of the need for government to bridge the gap between the aeronautics research and technology base and early application was developed. The charge further specifies that the assessment is to encompass considerations of safety, national defense, efficient transport, and the national economy.

Advanced ceramic coating development for industrial/utility gas turbine applications

The effects of ceramic coatings on the lifetimes of metal turbine components and on the performance of a utility turbine, as well as of the turbine operational cycle on the ceramic coatings were determined. When operating the turbine under conditions of constant cooling flow, the first row blades run 55K cooler, and as a result, have 10 times the creep rupture life, 10 times the low cycle fatigue life and twice the corrosion life with only slight decreases in both specific power and efficiency. When operating the turbine at constant metal temperature and reduced cooling flow, both specific power and efficiency increases, with no change in component lifetime. The most severe thermal transient of the turbine causes the coating bond stresses to approach 60% of the bond strengths. Ceramic coating failures was studied. Analytic models based on fracture mechanics theories, combined with measured properties quantitatively assessed both single and multiple thermal cycle failures which allowed the prediction of coating lifetime. Qualitative models for corrosion failures are also presented.

A standard description and costing methodology for the balance-of-plant items of a solar thermal electric power plant. Report of a multi-institutional working group

Standard descriptions for solar thermal power plants are established and uniform costing methodologies for nondevelopmental balance of plant (BOP) items are developed. The descriptions and methodologies developed are applicable to the major systems. These systems include the central receiver, parabolic dish, parabolic trough, hemispherical bowl, and solar pond. The standard plant is defined in terms of four categories comprising (1) solar energy collection, (2) power conversion, (3) energy storage, and (4) balance of plant. Each of these categories is described in terms of the type and function of components and/or subsystems within the category. A detailed description is given for the BOP category. BOP contains a number of nondevelopmental items that are common to all solar thermal systems. A standard methodology for determining the costs of these nondevelopmental BOP items is given. The methodology is presented in the form of cost equations involving cost factors such as unit costs. A set of baseline values for the normalized cost factors is also given.

Failure analysis of composite laminates including biaxial compression

This report describes a continued effort on the development and application of the tensor polynomial failure criterion for composite laminate analysis. In particular, emphasis is given to the design, construction and testing of a cross-beam laminate configuration to obtain "pure' biaxial compression failure. The purpose of this test case was to provide to permit "closure' of the cubic form of the failure surface in the 1-2 compression-compression quadrant. This resulted in a revised set of interaction strength parameters and the construction of a failure surface which can be used with confidence for strength predictions, assuming a plane stress state exists. Furthermore, the problem of complex conjugate roots which can occur in some failure regions is addressed and an "engineering' interpretation is provided. Results are presented illustrating this behavior and the methodology for overcoming this problem is discussed.

Time-critical multirate scheduling using contemporary real-time operating system services

Although real-time operating systems provide many of the task control services necessary to process time-critical applications (i.e., applications with fixed, invariant deadlines), it may still be necessary to provide a scheduling algorithm at a level above the operating system in order to coordinate a set of synchronized, time-critical tasks executing at different cyclic rates. The scheduling requirements for such applications and develops scheduling algorithms using services provided by contemporary real-time operating systems.

Study on spectral/radiometric characteristics of the Thematic Mapper for land use applications

Previous characterization of scan-related low-frequency noise was extended and refined through detailed analysis of shutter calibration data on CCT-ADDS tapes and reflective-band data from nighttime acquisitions. A recommended correction procedure was identified that uses calibration shutter data both as a diagnostic and to obtain correction values. Through comparison of coincident TM and MSS data, illustrations of the added information content of TM data for agricultural applications were developed. The capability of improved spatial resolution to better define boundaries and to resolve spatial details is shown. Spectral analysis of tasseled-cap transformations of TM and MSS data shows high correlation between greenness features, greater signal range for TM, and indications that a subset of TM bands could accurately simulate MSS data, if required.

A viscous-inviscid interactive procedure for rotational flow in cascades of two-dimensional airfoils of arbitrary shape

A viscous-inviscid interactive calculation procedure is developed for application to flow in cascades of two-dimensional airfoils. This procedure has essentially three components. First, a numerical solution of the Euler equations which can accommodate an arbitrarily specified cascade geometry is carried out on a nonorthogonal curvileanear grid mesh that is fitted to the geometry of the cascade. A method of grid generation has been used which relies in part on a succession of conformal mappings. Second, a viscous solution for use in boundary layer and wake regions has been programmed. Finally, an interactive scheme which takes the form of a source-sink distribution along the blade surface and wake centerline is employed. Results have been obtained with this procedure for several cascade flow situations, and some comparisons with experiment are presented.

Electro-optical processor for optimal control

An iterative optical processor has been developed for applications in the optimal control of advanced sensor systems. The processor is designed for the realization of the Richardson algorithm on bipolar data, using as input a linear array of LEDs. The usefulness of the processor has been demonstrated by the solution of the linear quadratic regulator problem for the optimal control signals of the F100 turbofan engine. In this case study, the algebraic Riccati equation matrix was solved by the use of a modified Kleinman algorithm along with the Richardson algorithm applied to a system of linear algebraic equations. Preliminary experimental results demonstrate the gradual convergence of the processor.

Programmable masks for optical information processing

Research in progress at NASA Ames Research Center on programmable masks is discussed in this paper. One type is a large area format liquid crystal mask intended for binary optical computation problems. To date, an on-off contrast ratio of 500:1 has been achieved at a switching rate of 1 Hz. With a 32 x 32 format, a ratio 10 to the 4th power:1 is desirable. The switching contrast is entirely dependent on the polarized quality; therefore, it is believed that 10 to the 4th power:1 in transmission is possible. Larger format masks are under development. An application to Hadamard transform polarized imagery at wavelengths of 1.0 to 2.0 micrometers, which is competitive with the best monolithic infrared detector arrays, is discussed.
