Physics-Informed Neural Network Modeling of Li-Ion Batteries: Preprint

Li-ion batteries (LIB) are a promising solution to enable storage of intermittent energy sources due to their high energy density. However, LIBs are known to significantly degrade after about 1000 charge-discharge cycles. LIBs degrade following different degradation modes and at a rate that depends on the operating conditions (external temperature, load). To plan the installation of batteries, appropriate understanding and prediction capabilities of their lifecycle is needed. High-fidelity numerical models of LIBs such as the pseudo-two-dimensional (P2D) model have been shown to accurately represent the charge-discharge-cycle of an LIB given ac- curate choice of the physical parameters. Given the large number of P2D parameters, adjusting them using forward runs is intractable. This work describes the development of a physics-informed neural network (PINN) as a surrogate substitute of the P2D model that captures parameter dependence. The PINN is advantageous as it needs little to no data, and can naturally encode the dependence of every model parameter. Here, a specific training procedure is adopted to efficiently cover parameter space, handle model stiffness and enforce boundary conditions. The trained PINN is validated against numerical solutions of the P2D model, and its applicability to battery degradation modeling is discussed.

HELEN: A Linear Collider Based On Advanced SRF Technology

This paper discusses recently proposed Higgs Energy LEptoN (HELEN) $e+e-$ linear collider based on advances in superconducting radio frequency technology. The collider offers cost and AC power savings, smaller footprint (relative to the ILC), and could be built at Fermilab with an interaction region within the site boundaries. After the initial physics run at 250 GeV, the collider could be upgraded either to higher luminosity or to higher (up to 500 GeV) energies.

Resilient, Rural, and Revolutionary: Salisbury Square's Direct-Current Affordable Microgrid Community: Preprint

The technology to interconnect buildings with a dedicated direct-current (DC) power distribution network is in place today; what is missing is a turnkey approach to designing a DC microgrid - and the business models allowing such systems to be deployed, owned, and operated at scale. To close this gap, the Salisbury Square Development Team, comprising clean-energy experts, has engineered a resilient community DC microgrid for an affordable housing community in Randolph, Vermont. Ten single-family, occupant-owned residences and 12 multifamily rental units will share locally generated and stored solar energy via a DC power distribution bus capable of operating during extended grid outages. With a DC power distribution network in place, each home will be equipped with high-efficiency DC lighting and appliances, operating alongside alternating current (AC) appliances, even during an islanded mode of operation. To obtain a comprehensive understanding of what is possible and achievable, the Team collaborated with the local utility, regulatory agencies, a national laboratory, energy-as-service providers, and vendors. The collaborators evaluated microgrid typologies, business models, and energy modeling, and analyzed electrification and resilience. Further, the Team applied the URBANoptTM (Urban Renewable Building and Neighborhood optimization, NREL 2022) software development kit (SDK) to Salisbury Square's single-family and multifamily buildings to validate workflows and identify needs for advanced capability. This paper addresses the barriers to entry, scalability, and impact on residents and system ownership. It also examines the analysis that informed the design and engineering of the DC microgrid and the opportunities to streamline the process.

Fixed gap capacitive power transfer coupling for wound field synchronous machines

An electrical rotating machine, such as a generator or motor, communicates power from a stationary location to the rotating rotor of the rotating machine via opposed pairs of capacitor plates, one plate of each pair rotating with the rotor and one plate of each pair fixed not to rotate. Larger plate gaps suitable for mechanically rigid plates are possible through high-voltage and high-frequency AC signals managed by using a dielectric support design for the capacitor plates minimizing dielectric loss and/or impedance matching on the rotor.

Nanoscale Three-Dimensional Imaging of Degradation in Composite Si-Containing Anodes

The use of silicon (Si) in next-generation lithium-ion battery (LIB) anodes has the potential to dramatically improve electrochemical performance over current LIB graphite (Gr) anodes, due to silicon’s higher specific capacity.1 However, widespread implementation of Si-containing anodes is inhibited by issues such as significant Si volume expansion during lithiation and an unstable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI), resulting in unreliable performance and poor cycle life. Currently, composite anodes with both Si and graphite active materials are used to increase capacity and mitigate some of the limitations associated with Si. In composite electrodes with a heterogeneous distribution of components with varying electrical properties (including Si, Gr, conductive carbon additive, and binder), it is important to understand the local distribution of each component to correlate with electrochemical processes, particularly localized degradation and heterogeneous aging, and to optimize performance. To investigate Si-containing composite anodes in the nanoscale, we use scanning spreading resistance microscopy (SSRM), a form of scanning probe microscopy (SPM) that probes local electronic resistivity. By examining the intrinsic electronic resistivity contrast between the anode components, separate phases can be distinguished and understood within the composite structure.2 This work studies the effect of electrochemical cycling in two different electrolytes on component distribution and aging by comparing the electrical and structural evolution of composite Si-graphite electrodes and SEI before and after charge-discharge cycling. 1. Solving the Unit Commitment Problem: Polyhedral Theory, Symmetry, and Power Flow

In this talk, I will give an overview of mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulations and extensions thereof which enable the effective solution of the unit commitment problem (UC) when paired with a commercial MILP solver. First, we will place UC in context, stressing the importance of achieving a (near) optimal solution. Then we will discuss the importance of perfect and "good-enough" formulations for individual generators / market participants. Some of these formulations enable symmetry-aware reformulations for identical market participants, which can be critical when symmetry is present. Finally, we will discuss approximations of AC power flow currently used in practice, and the challenges with including these approximations within the UC formulation.

Coordinated voltage control and reactive power regulation between transmission and distribution systems

Systems and methods are described for coordinating volt-var control between sub-transmission and distribution systems. Distributed energy resources of a distribution system are aggregated into virtual power plants from which reactive power can optimally be dispatched to the sub-transmission system. A sub-transmission controller executes a volt-var AC optimal power flow optimisation function to minimize voltage fluctuations that might otherwise occur when coordinating with a distribution system having distributed energy resources. The distribution system can use a sensitivity matrix for regulating voltage at distribution feeders while fulfilling a transmission or sub-transmission system's demand requests.

A Hardware Platform for Studying Naval Power Electronic Power Distribution Systems

Abstract – Future intelligent ship system designs will likely include electric propulsion, numerous highpower sensors, and directed energy weapons. Supply and control of these large nonlinear loads will require a networked, multi-converter power electronic power distribution system. This work presents a hardware platform to emulate a microgrid power system with multiple power converters and a power data communication network. The platform is reconfigurable and can include both AC and DC power distribution zones, representative of shipboard power systems. It also allows for the study of both power control actuation and power data communication delays. Since the platform is based on electric power hardware, spatial and temporal uncertainties are inherently embedded in the system. Specifically, this work examines the control actuation of multiple pulsed power loads in a single microgrid. Several pulse load levels and operating scenarios have been implemented and measured. A framework for control parameter quantification is presented, and various metrics are explored to capture pulse signal characteristics. The sensitivity of pulse load metric parameters is analyzed. Dynamic shipboard, mission-specific load profiles coupled with pulse loads can also be emulated in the hardware platform.

A Smart Silicon Carbide Power Module With Pulse Width Modulation Over Wi-Fi and Wireless Power Transfer-Enabled Gate Driver, Featuring Onboard State of Health Estimator and High-Voltage Scaling Capabilities: Preprint

A wide range of utility applications require controllable switches with features such as high-voltage (HV) blocking and high-current carrying capacity especially at high pulse width modulation (PWM) frequency. Low and medium voltage utility applications such as motor drives and flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) as well as solid state transformers (SST) could also benefit from a low-cost HV switching module. Wide band gap (WBG) semiconductors such as SiC and GaN MOSFETs are considered to be the present and next generation device choices, although they have their own limitations. For relatively HV applications with demanding thermal management, SiC is still the only choice, and GaN dominates the low voltage regime. This manuscript proposes a new half bridge power MOSFET module that is suitable for conventional H-bridge of multilevel configurations used in HV applications. Constructed from bare SiC dies, this half bridge module takes advantage of (1) optimized MOSFET placement inside the module, (2) customized heat exchanger, manifold and cooling, (3) integrated gate driver module with PWM over wi-fi to eliminate the need for low voltage signals, (4) wireless power transfer (WPT) enabled gate driver and other ancillary circuits, (5) and the option to incorporate an onboard state of health (SOH) estimator module onboard. The entire architecture has been designed and built at National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Golden, CO.

An Approach to Dynamic Human Reliability Analysis using EMRALD Dynamic Risk Assessment Tool

Research for dynamic human reliability analysis (HRA) (a.k.a., simulation-based or computation-based HRA) has been required, as many researchers have emphasized the importance of dynamic approaches to probabilistic safety assessment (PSA). This study proposes the PRocedure-based Investigation Method of EMRALD Risk Assessment – Human Reliability Analysis (PRIMERA-HRA) method, which is an approach to dynamic HRA using the Event Modeling Risk Assessment using Linked Diagram (EMRALD) software developed by Idaho National Laboratory (INL). In this study, how to model human actions using the software and evaluate the error probabilities is suggested. The applicability of this approach will be also investigated through an extended loss of AC power (ELAP) scenario. Then, major insights from this dynamic HRA approach against the static one will be discussed in the paper.

Modeling FLEX Human Actions Using the EMRALD Dynamic Risk Assessment Tool

Most current efforts have modified and applied existing human reliability analysis (HRA) methods to treat human actions related to beyond-design-basis external events in which diverse and flexible coping strategies (FLEX) equipment would be deployed. However, many questions remain regarding the suitability of legacy HRA methods to address FLEX human actions, sparking the need for a new method of reasonably evaluating them. In this context, Idaho National Laboratory (INL) researched a relatively new approach to treating FLEX human actions via Event Modeling Risk Assessment Using Linked Diagrams (EMRALD) software. EMRALD was developed to support the increasing need for dynamic probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) models that can respond to evolving plant conditions during simulations. A couple benefits were identified when analyzing FLEX human actions through this software. In general, it is especially useful for evaluating a strategy’s feasibility, including FLEX human actions that require a relatively long time to perform. In this paper, we suggest how FLEX human actions can be modeled using the EMRALD software. Two different HRA modeling approaches using EMRALD are introduced: (1) procedure-based modeling and (2) PRA/HRA-based modeling. The former approach was introduced in the authors’ previous paper, whereas this paper mainly discusses how the latter approach works for an extended loss of AC power (ELAP) scenario with relevant procedures and PRA models. A hybrid method combining the two modeling approaches is introduced at the paper’s conclusion.

Progress Update from the EV Charging Working Group (#982)

The EV charging working group (#982) was formed in summer 2022 to define the equip, points, relationships, and operational data related to Level 1-2 (AC) and Level 3 (DC) Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE). Last year, the working group developed formal EVSE-related equipment definitions, where were merged into the Project Haystack documentation in November 2022. More recently the group has also been working to expand and improve Haystack definitions related to electrical equipment and circuits. This initiative is important both for EV charging related applications and to improve Project Haystack's appeal to other industry verticals such as data centers, commercial building electrification, and more. In this presentation we will share the working group's motivation, progress, and near-term objectives.

Developing VSC-HVDC Oscillation Damping Control Constraints in Unit Commitment

High-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems within the existing power grids will play a pivotal role in enabling high share of renewable power integration and transportation electrification. There is a need for transmission planning models to accurately capture the impact of VSC-HVDC oscillation damping control on the system planning and model the constraints in the security constrained unit commitment (SCUC) problem. In this paper, the SCUC problem in a hybrid DC-AC grid considering damping on electromechanical inter-area oscillation is studied. An electromechanical oscillation-driven transmission capability constraints are derived from system swing equation and incorporated into the SCUC. Multiple system damping control scenarios are set based on the extracted plausible bounds of damping coefficient and inertia constant to linearize the nonlinear expressions. The SCUC problem with proposed constraints is tested on the IEEE 73-bus reliability test system (RTS) case via PLEXOS. The impact of the proposed constraints on regional generation, inertia, power flow, annual system cost, and renewable energy curtailment are fully assessed.
