Increase of Ozone Concentrations, Its Temperature Sensitivity and the Precursor Factor in South China

Concerns have been raised about the possible connections between the local and regional photochemical problem and global warming. The current study assesses the trend of ozone in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in South China and investigates the interannual changes of sensitivity of ozone to air temperature, as well as the trends in regional precursors. Results reveal, at the three monitoring sites from the mid-1990s to 2010, an increase in the mean ozone concentrations from 1.0 to 1.6 microgram m(exp -3) per year. The increase occurred in all seasons, with the highest rate in autumn. This is consistent with trends and temperature anomalies in the region. The increase in the sensitivity of ozone to temperature is clearly evident from the correlation between ozone (OMI [Ozone Monitoring Instrument] column amount) and surface air temperature (from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder) displayed in the correlation maps for the PRD during the prominently high ozone period of July September. It is observed to have increased from 2005 to 2010, the latter being the hottest year on record globally. To verify this temporal change in sensitivity, the ground-level trends of correlation coefficients/regression slopes are analysed. As expected, results reveal a statistically significant upward trend over a 14-year period (19972010). While the correlation revealed in the correlation maps is in agreement with the corresponding OMI ozone maps when juxtaposed, temperature sensitivity of surface ozone also shows an association with ozone concentration, with R0.5. These characteristics of ozone sensitivity are believed to have adverse implications for the region. As shown by ground measurements and/or satellite analyses, the decrease in nitrogen oxides (NO2) and NO(sub x) in Hong Kong is not statistically significant whileNO2 of thePRD has only very slightly changed. However, carbon dioxide has remarkably declined in the whole region. While these observations concerning precursors do not seem to adequately support an increasing ozone trend, measured surface levels of formaldehyde, a proxy for volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, have risen significantly in the PRD (20042010). Hence, the reactive VOCs in the PRD are likely to be the main culprit for the increase of ozone, as far as precursors are concerned. Despite the prevailing problem, model simulations suggest prospects for improvement in the future.

Developing a SARS-CoV-2 main protease binding prediction random forest model for drug repurposing for COVID-19 treatment

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) global pandemic resulted in millions of people becoming infected with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus and close to seven million deaths worldwide. It is essential to further explore and design effective COVID-19 treatment drugs that target the main protease of SARS-CoV-2, a major target for COVID-19 drugs. In this study, machine learning was applied for predicting the SARS-CoV-2 main protease binding of Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drugs to assist in the identification of potential repurposing candidates for COVID-19 treatment. Ligands bound to the SARS-CoV-2 main protease in the Protein Data Bank and compounds experimentally tested in SARS-CoV-2 main protease binding assays in the literature were curated. These chemicals were divided into training (516 chemicals) and testing (360 chemicals) data sets. To identify SARS-CoV-2 main protease binders as potential candidates for repurposing to treat COVID-19, 1188 FDA-approved drugs from the Liver Toxicity Knowledge Base were obtained. A random forest algorithm was used for constructing predictive models based on molecular descriptors calculated using Mold2 software. Model performance was evaluated using 100 iterations of fivefold cross-validations which resulted in 78.8% balanced accuracy. The random forest model that was constructed from the whole training dataset was used to predict SARS-CoV-2 main protease binding on the testing set and the FDA-approved drugs. Model applicability domain and prediction confidence on drugs predicted as the main protease binders discovered 10 FDA-approved drugs as potential candidates for repurposing to treat COVID-19. Our results demonstrate that machine learning is an efficient method for drug repurposing and, thus, may accelerate drug development targeting SARS-CoV-2.

Computational analysis of the tryptophan cation radical energetics in peroxidase Compound $\mathrm{I}$

Three well-characterized heme peroxidases (cytochrome c peroxidase = CCP, ascorbate peroxidase = APX, and Leishmania major peroxidase = LMP) all have a Trp residue tucked under the heme stacked against the proximal His heme ligand. The reaction of peroxidases with H 2 O 2 to give Compound I results in the oxidation of this Trp to a cationic radical in CCP and LMP but not in APX. Considerable experimental data indicate that the local electrostatic environment controls whether this Trp or the porphyrin is oxidized in Compound I. Attempts have been made to place the differences between these peroxidases on a quantitative basis using computational methods. These efforts have been somewhat limited by the approximations required owing to the computational cost of using fully solvated atomistic models with well-developed forcefields. This now has changed with available GPU computing power and the associated development of software. Here we employ thermodynamic integration and multistate Bennett acceptance ratio methods to help fine-tune our understanding on the energetic differences in Trp radical stabilization in all three peroxidases. These results indicate that the local solvent structure near the redox active Trp plays a significant role in stabilization of the cationic Trp radical.

Role of Eu-Doping in the Electron Transport Behavior in the Zintl Thermoelectric Ca 5-x-y Yb x Eu y Al 2 Sb 6 System

A series of Eu-doped Zintl compounds belonging to theCa 5-x-y Yb x Eu y Al 2 Sb 6 (x = 0, 1.12; 0 ≤ y ≤ 0.63(2)) system have been successfully synthesized by both the arc-melting and the molten Pb-flux methods. All of the five title compounds initially crystallized in the Ca 5 Ga 2 As 6 -type phase (space group Pbam, Z = 2, Pearson code oP26) and maintained their original structure even after the post-heat treatment, unlike the recently reported n-type Zintl analogues in the Ca 5-x-y Yb x RE y Al 2 Sb 6 (RE = Pr, Nd, Sm) systems, which underwent a phase transition from the Ca 5 Ga 2 As 6 -type to the Ca 5 Al 2 Bi 6 -type phase after annealing. This research aimed to understand the origin of the structural preference of the title Ca 5-x-y Yb x Eu y Al 2 Sb 6 system, whether it was affected by the valence electron count or the cationic size. Electrical transport property measurements showed an increase in electrical conductivities and a decrease of Seebeck coefficients for Ca 4.89(1) Eu 0.11 Al 2 Sb 6 , Ca 4.82(1) Eu 0.18 Al 2 Sb 6 , and Ca 4.62(1) Eu 0.38 Al 2 Sb 6 , compared to the parental compound Ca 5 Al 2 Sb 6 . Hole effect measurements proved that these changes should be attributed to the reduced carrier concentration and enhanced carrier mobility. The comprehensive density functional theory calculations including electron density map analysis for the hypothetical model Ca 4.5 Eu 0.5 Al 2 Sb 6 revealed that the polarity between Al and Sb forming the anionic frameworks decreased as the Eu-dopants were introduced, which eventually affected the carrier mobility in the anionic frameworks. Thermal conductivity measurements proved that the Eu-doping successfully lowered the lattice thermal conductivity because of the enhanced atomic disordering. In conclusion, the magnetization measurements for Ca 4.37(2) Eu 0.63 Al 2 Sb 6 showed a typical Curie–Weiss behavior with weak antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interactions with θ p = -5.07 K.

Deciphering the Solvent Effect for the Solvation Structure of Ca 2+ in Polar Molecular Liquids

Although the crystal structures for many inorganic compounds are readily available, researchers are still working hard to understand the relations between the structures and chemical properties of solutions because most of the chemical reactions take place in solutions. A huge amount of effort has been put toward modeling the ion solvation structure from the perspectives of both experiments and theories. In this study, the solvation structures of Ca 2+ ions in aqueous and alcoholic solutions at different concentrations were carefully evaluated by Ca K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analyses. Further, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were also performed to correlate the results with the experimental data and then further extended to other similar systems. It was found that the number of coordinating solvent molecules decreases with increasing Ca 2+ concentration and increasing solvent molecule sizes. From the EXAFS data, it was observed that the first solvation shell of Ca 2+ splits into two Ca-O distances in a methanol solution and the counter ion Cl - might also be within the first shell at high concentrations. For the first time, the effects of solvents with different polarities and sizes on the ion solvation environment were systematically evaluated.

The phononic and charge density wave behavior of entire rare-earth tritelluride series with chemical pressure and temperature

Here, we present comprehensive phononic and charge density wave properties (CDW) of rare-earth van der Waals tritellurides through temperature dependent angle-resolved Raman spectroscopy measurements. All the possible rare-earth tritellurides (RTe3) ranging from R = La–Nd, Sm, Gd–Tm were synthesized through a chemical vapor transport technique to achieve high quality crystals with excellent CDW characteristics. Raman spectroscopy studies successfully identify the emergence of the CDW state and transition temperature (TCDW), which offers a non-destructive method to identify their CDW response with micron spatial resolution. Temperature dependent Raman measurements further correlate how the atomic mass of metal cations and the resulting chemical pressure influence its CDW properties and offer detailed insight into the strength of CDW amplitude mode-phonon coupling during the CDW transition. Angle-resolved Raman measurements offer the first insights into the CDW-phonon symmetry interplay by monitoring the change in the symmetry of phonon mode across the CDW transition. Overall results introduce the library of RTe3 CDW materials and establish their characteristics through the non-destructive angle-resolved Raman spectroscopy technique.

Suppressed superexchange interactions in the cuprates by bond-stretching oxygen phonons

We study a multiorbital Hubbard–Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model for the one-dimensional (1D) corner-shared cuprates in the adiabatic and nonadiabatic limits using exact diagonalization and determinant quantum Monte Carlo. At half filling and in the adiabatic limit, lattice dimerization can be achieved only over a narrow range of couplings slightly below a critical coupling g c . Beyond this value, the sign of the effective hopping changes, and the lattice becomes unstable. Strong lattice fluctuations replace the dimerization state in the nonadiabatic case. We also examine the model's temperature-dependent uniform and dynamical magnetic susceptibilities and compare them to the results of an effective spin-1/2 Heisenberg model. In doing so, we demonstrate that lattice fluctuations induced by the e-ph interaction suppress the effective superexchange interaction when g < g c . Furthermore, our results elucidate the effect of bond-stretching phonons in the parent cuprate compounds in general and are particularly relevant to 1D cuprates, where strong e-ph interactions have recently been inferred.

Production of organic molecules by proton irradiation

Preliminary experiments were carried out to investigate the effectiveness of proton irradiation for producing organic chromophores. The source of the 2 MeV protons used in the experiments was a model Van de Graaff accelerator. The gas cells used were hollow aluminum cylinders. The test results show that energetic protons can be an effective energy source for the formation of complex molecules from simple ones. With the exception of sulfide compounds none of the molecules that were identified are colored. However, coloring agents could be contained in unresolvable fractions.

Analysis of torsional spectra of molecules with two internal C3v rotors. IX - The torsional potential functions of isobutene-d0 and -d6

Raman spectra of gaseous isobutene (CH3)2C=CH2 and isobutene-d6 have been recorded between 100 and 500/cm with a resolution of 1/cm, and the far-IR spectra of the same compounds have been recorded over the same frequency range with a resolution of 0.5/cm. Several torsional transitions have been observed for both molecules and these data have been used to determine the torsional potential function based on a semirigid model. Values of average effective barrier were determined for the molecules.

Chemical interpretation of Viking Lander 1 life detection experiment

An earth-based evaluation of the Viking Lander 1 life-detection experiments was conducted using a radiofrequency glow discharge in a simulated Martian atmosphere. The Gas Exchange Experiment conducted in the humid mode released substantial amounts of CO2, O2, N2, Ar, and CO into the atmosphere, indicating that these substances were adsorbed onto the Martian soil. An adsorption potential plot is given, graphing quantity of gas against time (d). For a model surface area of 17 squares meters per gram of measured substance, oxygen adsorption was found to be relatively high, a result which tends to confirm the hypothesis that Martian oxygen exists largely in chemisorbed states or in active oxygen compounds, e.g., peroxide, superoxide, hydroperoxide

Nucleation and growth of stratospheric aerosols

Formation mechanisms and nucleation processes are examined, and nucleation in the stratosphere is considered, taking into account binary nucleation, ternary nucleation, binary heterogeneous nucleation, and heteromolecular nucleation. Attention is also given to the growth of aerosol particles, nucleation and growth in models, and the role of aerosols in the upper atmosphere. It is pointed out that various sampling studies and numerical models have provided evidence that the in situ oxidation of sulfur-bearing gases is responsible for the sulfate mass of the stratospheric aerosol. Data obtained by Castleman et al. (1974) suggest that there is a common source of sulfur compounds for the stratosphere of both the northern and southern hemispheres.

Ablation effects in oxygen-lead fragmentation at 2.1 GeV/nucleon

The mechanism of particle evaporation was used to examine ablation effects in the fragmentation of 2.1 GeV/nucleon oxygen nuclei by lead targets. Following the initial abrasion process, the excited projectile prefragment is assumed to statistically decay in a manner analogous to that of a compound nucleus. The decay probabilities for the various particle emission channels are calculated by using the EVAP-4 Monte Carlo computer program. The input excitation energy spectrum for the prefragment is estimated from the geometric ""clean cut'' abrasion-ablation model. Isotope production cross sections are calculated and compared with experimental data and with the predictions from the standard geometric abrasion-ablation fragmentation model.

Global atmospheric chemistry of CFC-123

The compound 1,1-dichloro--2,2,2-trifluoroethane (CFC-123) has been proposed as an industrial substitute for trichlorofluoromethane (CFC-11). The chemical destruction rates of CFC-123 by various processes is calculated here using a three-dimensional global model of the atmosphere, and it is confirmed that the chief sink of CFC-123 is destruction by OH radicals below 12 km, accounting for 88 percent of its loss. The calculated destruction rate is greatest in the equatorial region below 2 km. The calculated steady-state lifetime of CFC-123 is 1.5 years, much shorter than that of CFC-11, the destruction of which is largely confined to the stratosphere. For equal rates of CFC-123 and CFC-11 emission to the atmosphere, the molar content in the atmosphere and the injection rate of chlorine into the stratosphere are, respectively, 48 and 14 times greater for CFC-11 than for CFC-123 in steady state.

Permeation of halide anions through phospholipid bilayers occurs by the solubility-diffusion mechanism

Two alternative mechanisms are frequently used to describe ionic permeation of lipid bilayers. In the first, ions partition into the hydrophobic phase and then diffuse across (the solubility-diffusion mechanism). The second mechanism assumes that ions traverse the bilayer through transient hydrophilic defects caused by thermal fluctuations (the pore mechanism). The theoretical predictions made by both models were tested for halide anions by measuring the permeability coefficients for chloride, bromide, and iodide as a function of bilayer thickness, ionic radius, and sign of charge. To vary the bilayer thickness systematically, liposomes were prepared from monounsaturated phosphatidylcholines (PC) with chain lengths between 16 and 24 carbon atoms. The fluorescent dye MQAE (N-(ethoxycarbonylmethyl)-6-methoxyquinolinium bromide) served as an indicator for halide concentration inside the liposomes and was used to follow the kinetics of halide flux across the bilayer membranes. The observed permeability coefficients ranged from 10(-9) to 10(-7) cm/s and increased as the bilayer thickness was reduced. Bromide was found to permeate approximately six times faster than chloride through bilayers of identical thickness, and iodide permeated three to four times faster than bromide. The dependence of the halide permeability coefficients on bilayer thickness and on ionic size were consistent with permeation of hydrated ions by a solubility-diffusion mechanism rather than through transient pores. Halide permeation therefore differs from that of a monovalent cation such as potassium, which has been accounted for by a combination of the two mechanisms depending on bilayer thickness.

A comparative study of two-way and offline coupled WRF v3.4 and CMAQ v5.0.2 over the contiguous US: performance evaluation and impacts of chemistry–meteorology feedbacks on air quality

The two-way coupled Weather Research and Forecasting and Community Multiscale Air Quality (WRF-CMAQ) model has been developed to more realistically represent the atmosphere by accounting for complex chemistry–meteorology feedbacks. In this study, we present a comparative analysis of two-way (with consideration of both aerosol direct and indirect effects) and offline coupled WRF v3.4 and CMAQ v5.0.2 over the contiguous US. Long-term (5 years from 2008 to 2012) simulations using WRF-CMAQ with both offline and two-way coupling modes are carried out with anthropogenic emissions based on multiple years of the U.S. National Emission Inventory and chemical initial and boundary conditions derived from an advanced Earth system model (i.e., a modified version of the Community Earth System Model/Community Atmospheric Model). The comprehensive model evaluations show that both two-way WRF-CMAQ and WRF-only simulations perform well for major meteorological variables such as temperature at 2 m, relative humidity at 2 m, wind speed at 10 m, precipitation (except for against the National Climatic Data Center data), and shortwave and longwave radiation. Both two-way and offline CMAQ also show good performance for ozone (O3) and fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ). Due to the consideration of aerosol direct and indirect effects, two-way WRF-CMAQ shows improved performance over offline coupled WRF and CMAQ in terms of spatiotemporal distributions and statistics, especially for radiation, cloud forcing, O 3 , sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, elemental carbon, tropospheric O 3 residual, and column nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ). For example, the mean biases have been reduced by more than 10 W m –2 for shortwave radiation and cloud radiative forcing and by more than 2 ppb for max 8 h O 3 . However, relatively large biases still exist for cloud predictions, some PM 2.5 species, and PM 10 that warrant follow-up studies to better understand those issues. The impacts of chemistry–meteorological feedbacks are found to play important roles in affecting regional air quality in the US by reducing domain-average concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO), O 3 , nitrogen oxide (NO x ), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and PM 2.5 by 3.1 % (up to 27.8 %), 4.2 % (up to 16.2 %), 6.6 % (up to 50.9 %), 5.8 % (up to 46.6 %), and 8.6 % (up to 49.1 %), respectively, mainly due to reduced radiation, temperature, and wind speed. The overall performance of the two-way coupled WRF-CMAQ model achieved in this work is generally good or satisfactory and the improved performance for two-way coupled WRF-CMAQ should be considered along with other factors in developing future model applications to inform policy making.

The effect of rare-earth substitution on the Debye temperature of inorganic phosphors

In the quest to predict photoluminescent efficiency in rare-earth substituted inorganic phosphors, research has shown that materials consisting of ordered, rigid crystal structures tend to possess the highest photoluminescent quantum yields. A compound's Debye temperature (Θ D ), which can be calculated using ab initio calculations, is an ideal proxy for quantitatively comparing structural rigidity among different inorganic compounds, allowing potentially efficient phosphors to be selected from large crystal structure databases. However, the high computational cost of these calculations limits estimating Θ D for unsubstituted host crystal structures only. It is assumed that the low substitution concentration of the rare-earth luminescent center does not significantly influence a material's Debye temperature. This work evaluates the validity of this approximation by examining the effect of luminescent center substitution on a host structure's Θ D . Two well-known phosphors, (Y 1– x Ce x ) 3 Al 5 O 12 ( x = 0 – 0.05) and Ba 1-δ Eu δ MgAl 10 O 17 (δ = 0 – 0.15), were synthesized with varying rare-earth concentrations, while Θ D was computationally estimated and then determined by ultrasonic pulse-echo speed-of-sound and low-temperature heat capacity measurements. Overall, the ensuing results provide key implications for using Θ D as a proxy for structural rigidity in substituted inorganic compounds.

On the origin of metabolic pathways

The heterotrophic theory of the origin of life is the only proposal available with experimental support. This comes from the ease of prebiotic synthesis under strongly reducing conditions. The prebiotic synthesis of organic compounds by reduction of CO(2) to monomers used by the first organisms would also be considered an heterotrophic origin. Autotrophy means that the first organisms biosynthesized their cell constituents as well as assembling them. Prebiotic synthetic pathways are all different from the biosynthetic pathways of the last common ancestor (LCA). The steps leading to the origin of the metabolic pathways are closer to prebiotic chemistry than to those in the LCA. There may have been different biosynthetic routes between the prebiotic and the LCAs that played an early role in metabolism but have disappeared from extant organisms. The semienzymatic theory of the origin of metabolism proposed here is similar to the Horowitz hypothesis but includes the use of compounds leaking from preexisting pathways as well as prebiotic compounds from the environment.

Paramagnon dispersion and damping in doped Na x Ca 2 – x CuO 2 Cl 2

Here, using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, we measure the paramagnon dispersion and damping of undoped, antiferromagnetic Ca 2 CuO 2 Cl 2 as well as doped, superconducting Na x Ca 2–x CuO 2 Cl 2 . Our estimation of the spin-exchange parameter and width of the paramagnon peak at the zone boundary X=(0.5, 0) confirms that no simple relation can be drawn between these parameters and the critical temperature T c . Consistently with other cuprate compounds, we show that upon doping there is a slight softening at (0.25,0) but not at the zone boundary X. In combination with these measurements we perform calculations of the dynamical spin structure factor of the one-band Hubbard model using cluster dynamical mean-field theory. The calculations are in excellent agreement with the experiment in the undoped case, both in terms of energy position and width. While the increase in width is also captured upon doping, the dynamical spin structure factor shows a sizable softening at X, which provides insightful information on the length-scale of the spin fluctuations in doped cuprates.
