Thermochemical cycle analysis using linked CECS72 and HYDRGN computer programs

A combined thermochemical cycle analysis computer program was designed. Input to the combined program is the same as input to the thermochemical cycle analysis program except that the extent of the reactions need not be specified. The combined program is designed to be run interactively from a computer time-sharing terminal. This mode of operation allows correction or modification of the cycle to take place during cycle analysis. A group of 13 thermochemical cycles was used to test the combined program.

OSU participation in the CTS communications link characterization experiment

A four element self phased array was developed for propagation measurements utilizing the Communication Technology Satellite 11.7 GHz downlink. The parameters of interest in measurements were attenuation, amplitude scintillation, and angle of arrival variability. Simultaneous scintillation measurements were also conducted at 360 MHz, 2.075 GHz, and 30 GHz utilizing ATS-6. The unique movement of ATS-6 during 1976 permitted extensive measurement of scintillation characteristics as a function of path elevation angle.

Cross Linking and Degradation Mechanisms in Model Sealant Candidates

Model compounds were investigated as to which type of heterocyclic ring is the most advantageous for curing sealants based on perfluoroalkylether chains. The relative thermal, thermal oxidative, hydrolytic, and fuel stability of potential crosslinks were determined. Specifically substituted materials were synthesized and evaluation of their stabilities in air, inert atmosphere, water, and Jet-A fuel at 235 and 325 C was made. Three heterocyclic ring systems were considered, namely, triazine, 1,2,4- and 1,3,4-oxadiazoles.

Measurements of rain effects on an 18-GHz dual-polarized propagation link

The paper presents highlights of rain attenuation and depolarization data collected between August 1972 and March 1974 in an experimental setup consisting of a 1.43-km line-of-sight path with 1.22-m diam dual-polarized parabolic reflector antennas at each end. The antennas used question-mark mounted scalar feeds oriented to transmit or receive linearly polarized 17.65-GHz signals having electric field vectors at +45 deg and -45 deg from the vertical. Rain data were collected and analyzed for 24 individual storms in which the rain rate exceeded 10 mm/hr. Received signal levels were sampled once each second and stored by a small digital computer which controlled the experiment and performed preliminary data processing. The results are compared with a theoretical model presented by Wiley et al. (1974). Experimental cross-polarization isolation data are found to agree well with theoretical values, especially at high rain rates where the antenna effects are the least significant.

A timed-correlated four-link Doppler Tracking system

Phase perturbations that occur in the following components of the one and two-way systems are considered: (1) one-way system (signal from A to B): station a oscillator - transmitter A antenna A - signal path - antenna B - receiver B station B oscillator - recording system B; (2) two-way system (signal from A to B back to A): station A oscillator - transmitter A - antenna A - signal path up - antenna B - transponder B - antenna B - signal path down - receiver A - station A oscillator - recording system A. A symmetrical one- and two-way system which can identify the place of origin of the fluctuation and quantify it so as to recover the unperturbed phase at a given moment of time by time-correlating the phase fluctuations obtained in the one- and two-way data taken at both stations is described

Communications Link Characterization Experiment (CLCE) technical data report, volume 2

The results are presented of the long term rain rate statistical analysis and the investigation of determining the worst month statistical from the measured attenuation data caused by precipitation. The rain rate statistics cover a period of 11 months from July of 1974 to May of 1975 for measurements taken at the NASA, Rosman station. The rain rate statistical analysis is a continuation of the analysis of the rain rate data accumulated for the ATS-6 Millimeter Wave Progation Experiment. The statistical characteristics of the rain rate data through December of 1974 is also presented for the above experiment.

Scintillation statistics measured in an earth-space-earth retroreflector link

Scintillation was measured in a vertical path from a ground-based laser transmitter to the Geos 3 satellite and back to a ground-based receiver telescope and, the experimental results were compared with analytical results presented in a companion paper (Bufton, 1977). The normalized variance, the probability density function and the power spectral density of scintillation were all measured. Moments of the satellite scintillation data in terms of normalized variance were lower than expected. The power spectrum analysis suggests that there were scintillation components at frequencies higher than the 250 Hz bandwidth available in the experiment.

Variations of the earth's magnetic field and rapid climatic cooling: A possible link through changes in global ice volume

A possible relationship between large scale changes in global ice volume, variations in the earth's magnetic field, and short term climatic cooling is investigated through a study of the geomagnetic and climatic records of the past 300,000 years. The calculations suggest that redistribution of the Earth's water mass can cause rotational instabilities which lead to geomagnetic excursions; these magnetic variations in turn may lead to short-term coolings through upper atmosphere effects. Such double coincidences of magnetic excursions and sudden coolings at times of ice volume changes have occurred at 13,500, 30,000, 110,000, and 135,000 YBP.

In situ self cross-linking of polyvinyl alcohol battery separators

A battery separator was produced from a polyvinyl alcohol sheet structure which was subjected to an in situ, self crosslinking process by selective oxidation of the 1,2 diol units present in the polyvinyl alcohol sheet structure. The 1,2 diol units were cleaved to form aldehyde end groups which subsequently crosslink through acetalization of the 1,3 diol units of the polyvinyl alcohol. Selective oxidation was achieved using a solution of a suitable oxidizing agent such as periodic acid or lead tetraacetate.

New High Temperature Cross Linking Monomers

This report describes the results of a one-year program designed to synthesize new, nonvolatile crosslinking monomers and to prove their feasibility in the development of lower temperature curing PMR-polyimide resins with high temperature capability. The objective of this program is to develop PMR-polyimide resins capable of being processed at a maximum temperature of 232C to 288C (450F to 500F) without sacrifice of the high temperature 316C (600F) capability of the state-of-the-art PMR-15 polyimide resin. Four monomethyl esters were synthesized and characterized for use in the crosslinking studies. It was found that all four crosslinkers were capable of entering into a crosslinking reaction to produce polymer specimens which were strong, dense and free of voids. The infrared and DSC studies of each crosslinker with monomers 4,4'-methylenedianiline (MDA) and the dimethyl ester of 3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic acid (BTDE) comprising the resin systems, crosslinker/MDA/BTDE suggested that curing could be accomplished at 288C (550F). However, fabrication of dense, void free polymer specimens required a temperature of 316C (600F) and a pressure of 0.69 MPa (100 psi). The crosslinkers, monomethyl ester of 2,5-bicyclo[2.2.1]heptadiene-2,3-dicarboxylic acid (NDE) and monomethyl ester of maleic acid (MAE) were selected for evaluation in Celion 6000/PMR polyimide composites. These composites were characterized at RT, 288C (550F) and 316C (600F) initially and after isothermal aging at 288C (550F) and 316C (600F) for several hundred hours. The results of the isothermal aging studies suggested that both PMR systems NDE-MDA-BTDE and MAE-MDA-BTDE are promising candidates as matrices for addition type polyimide composites. These studies demonstrated that alternate crosslinkers to NE/MDA/BTDE are feasible, but mechanisms to lower the crosslinking temperature must be developed to provide lower temperature processing PMR-type polyimides.

Evidence linking coronal transients to the evolution of coronal holes

The positions of X-ray coronal transients outside of active regions observed during Skylab were superposed on H-alpha synoptic charts and coronal hole boundaries for seven solar rotations. A detailed spatial association between the transients and neutral lines was confirmed. It was found that most of the transients were related to large-scale changes in coronal hole area and tended to occur on the borders of evolving equatorial holes.
