Expansion-driven Weibel instability in magnetohydrodynamics: Linear theory for static systems

The Weibel dispersion relation is obtained in the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) approximation by including a tensor expression for temperature. MHD gives an upper cutoff wavenumber for Weibel growth identical to kinetic theory if the electron drift velocity is included in the evolution of the electron temperature. MHD overestimates growth rates compared to kinetic theory and gives maximum growth at larger wavenumbers, but it only leads to divergent results as temperature anisotropy tends to infinity. Thermal conduction in MHD lowers the growth rates and shifts maximum growth to smaller wavenumbers, but flux-limited or nonlocal thermal conduction is found to significantly limit these effects. The results are used as a first step in evaluating the potential of MHD to simulate expansion-driven Weibel instability, which occurs due to the temperature tensor only cooling in the direction of expansion. Finally, the small temperature anisotropy found in expansion-driven Weibel instability means that MHD could be an adequate model because growth rates are much less than the electron plasma frequency, and wavelengths are much greater than the Debye length.

An implicit adaptation algorithm for a linear model reference control system

This paper presents a stable implicit adaptation algorithm for model reference control. The constraints for stability are found using Lyapunov's second method and do not depend on perfect model following between the system and the reference model. Methods are proposed for satisfying these constraints without estimating the parameters on which the constraints depend.

An algorithm for obtaining the minimal realization of a linear time-invariant system and determining if a system is stabilizable-detectable

A definition of centralized fixed modes of a system, which is an adoption of the definition of fixed modes for a decentralized system is made. It is shown that the centralized fixed modes of a system can be easily and efficiently calculated in terms of the eigenvalues of the system, and that the calculation of such fixed modes enables one to determine, in a numerically efficient way, whether a system is controllable, observable, stabilizable, or detectable. An efficient algorithm for reducing a system to minimal realization form is then given. The algorithms have been effectively used on systems of order up to 100.

A computer package for the design and eigenproblem solution of damped linear multidegree of freedom systems

Systems described by the matrix differental equation are considered. An interactive design routine is presented for positive definite mass, damping, and stiffness matrices. Designing is accomplished by adjusting the mass, damping, and stiffness matrices to obtain a desired oscillation behavior. The algorithm also features interactively modifying the physical structure of the system, obtaining the matrix structure and a number of other system properties. In case of a general system, where the M, C, and K matrices lack any special properties, a routine for the eigenproblem solution of the system is developed. The latent roots are obtained by computing the characteristic polynomial of the system and solving for its roots. The above routines are prepared in FORTRAN IV and prove to be usable for the machines with low core memory.

Stabilization and robustness of non-linear unity-feedback system - Factorization approach

The paper is a self-contained discussion of a right factorization approach in the stability analysis of the nonlinear continuous-time or discrete-time, time-invariant or time-varying, well-posed unity-feedback system S1(P, C). It is shown that a well-posed stable feedback system S1(P, C) implies that P and C have right factorizations. In the case where C is stable, P has a normalized right-coprime factorization. The factorization approach is used in stabilization and simultaneous stabilization results.

An interferometric strain-displacement measurement system

A system for measuring the relative in-plane displacement over a gage length as short as 100 micrometers is described. Two closely spaced indentations are placed in a reflective specimen surface with a Vickers microhardness tester. Interference fringes are generated when they are illuminated with a He-Ne laser. As the distance between the indentations expands or contracts with applied load, the fringes move. This motion is monitored with a minicomputer-controlled system using linear diode arrays as sensors. Characteristics of the system are: (1) gage length ranging from 50 to 500 micrometers, but 100 micrometers is typical; (2) least-count resolution of approximately 0.0025 micrometer; and (3) sampling rate of 13 points per second. In addition, the measurement technique is non-contacting and non-reinforcing. It is useful for strain measurements over small gage lengths and for crack opening displacement measurements near crack tips. This report is a detailed description of a new system recently installed in the Mechanisms of Materials Branch at the NASA Langley Research Center. The intent is to enable a prospective user to evaluate the applicability of the system to a particular problem and assemble one if needed.
