Global electric field determination in the Earth's outer magnetosphere using energetic charged particles

Although many properties of the Earth's magnetosphere have been measured and quantified in the past 30 years since it was discovered, one fundamental measurement (for zeroth order MHD equilibrium) has been made infrequently and with poor spatial coverage - the global electric field. This oversight is due in part to the neglect of theorists. However, there is renewed interest in the convection electric field because it is now realized to be central to many magnetospheric processes, including the global MHD equilibrium, reconnection rates, Region 2 Birkeland currents, magnetosphere ionosphere coupling, ring current and radiation belt transport, substorm injections, and several acceleration mechanisms. Unfortunately the standard experimental methods have not been able to synthesize a global field (excepting the pioneering work of McIlwain's geostationary models) and we are left with an overly simplistic theoretical field, the Volland-Stern electric field model. Single point measurements of the plasmapause were used to infer the appropriate amplitudes of this model, parameterized by K(sub p). Although this result was never intended to be the definitive electric field model, it has gone nearly unchanged for 20 years. The analysis of current data sets requires a great deal more accuracy than can be provided by the Volland-Stern model. The variability of electric field shielding has not been properly addressed although effects of penetrating magnetospheric electric fields has been seen in mid-and low-latitude ionospheric data sets. The growing interest in substorm dynamics also requires a much better assessment of the electric fields responsible for particle injections. Thus we proposed and developed algorithms for extracting electric fields from particle data taken in the Earth's magnetosphere. As a test of the effectiveness of these new techniques, we analyzed data taken by the AMPTE/CCE spacecraft in equatorial orbit from 1984 to 1989.

Conducted Susceptibility Data Adaptation Tool

The purpose of this research project is to help NASA scientists increase effectivity in testing by reducing the amount of time required for data conversion from initial measurements to the analysis stage. This project resulted in a data conversion tool developed in python using the openpyxl library. When lab personnel perform the Conducted Susceptibility 101 (CS101) and Conducted Susceptibility 02 (CS02) tests in the Semi-anechoic Electromagnetic Compatibility Test Facility at NASA Langley Research Center, the driving code produces a text file under the .DAT extension. The data must be manually converted the .DAT file into an Excel file line by line for data analysis. The Conducted Susceptibility Data Adaptation Tool (CSDAT) uses python code to convert the .DAT files to spreadsheets automatically which saves lab personnel time which they could use for faster analysis as well as prevents possible human error such as leaving out a line of data in the manual conversion process.

Optimal sensor placement for reconstructing wind pressure field around buildings using compressed sensing

Deciding how to optimally deploy sensors in a large, complex, and spatially extended structure is critical to ensure that the surface pressure field is accurately captured for subsequent analysis and design. In some cases, reconstruction of missing data is required in downstream tasks such as the development of digital twins. Here, this paper presents a data-driven sparse sensor selection algorithm, aiming to provide the most information contents for reconstructing aerodynamic characteristics of wind pressures over tall building structures parsimoniously. The algorithm first fits a set of basis functions to the training data, then applies a computationally efficient QR algorithm that ranks existing pressure sensors in order of importance based on the state reconstruction to this tailored basis. The findings of this study show that the proposed algorithm successfully re- constructs the aerodynamic characteristics of tall buildings from sparse measurement locations, generating stable and optimal solutions across a range of conditions. As a result, this study serves as a promising first step toward leveraging the success of data-driven and machine learning algorithms to supplement traditional genetic algorithms currently used in wind engineering.

SQL and NoSQL Databases for Cyber Physical Production Systems in Internet of Things for Manufacturing (IoTfM)

Abstract In this paper, the design and performance differences between Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) and NoSQL Database Systems are examined, with attention to their applicability for real-world Internet of Things for manufacturing (IoTfM) data. While previous work has extensively compared SQL and NoSQL for both generalized and IoT uses, this work specifically examines the tradeoffs and performance differences for manufacturing applications by using a high-fidelity data set collected from a large US manufacturing firm. Growing an IoT system beyond the pilot stage requires scalable data storage; this work seeks to determine the impact of selected database systems on data write performance at scale. Payload size and message frequency were used as the primary characteristics to maintain model fidelity in simulated clients. As the number of simulated asset clients grow, the data write latency was calculated to determine how both database systems’ performance were affected. To isolate the RDBMS and NoSQL differences, a cloud environment was created using Amazon Web Services (AWS) with two identical data ingestion pipelines: writing data to an RDMBS (1) using AWS Aurora MySQL, and (2) using AWS DynamoDB NoSQL. The findings may provide guidance for further experimentation in large-scale manufacturing IoT implementations.

Three-dimensional perspective software for representation of digital imagery data

A generalized three dimensional perspective software capability was developed within the framework of a low cost computer oriented geographically based information system using the Earth Resources Laboratory Applications Software (ELAS) operating subsystem. This perspective software capability, developed primarily to support data display requirements at the NASA/NSTL Earth Resources Laboratory, provides a means of displaying three dimensional feature space object data in two dimensional picture plane coordinates and makes it possible to overlay different types of information on perspective drawings to better understand the relationship of physical features. An example topographic data base is constructed and is used as the basic input to the plotting module. Examples are shown which illustrate oblique viewing angles that convey spatial concepts and relationships represented by the topographic data planes.

Geocoded data structures and their applications to Earth science investigations

A geocoded data structure is a means for digitally representing a geographically referenced map or image. The characteristics of representative cellular, linked, and hybrid geocoded data structures are reviewed. The data processing requirements of Earth science projects at the Goddard Space Flight Center and the basic tools of geographic data processing are described. Specific ways that new geocoded data structures can be used to adapt these tools to scientists' needs are presented. These include: expanding analysis and modeling capabilities; simplifying the merging of data sets from diverse sources; and saving computer storage space.
