Concentric Ring Gas Atomization Die Design for Optimized Particle Production

In partnership with Linde plc (formerly Praxair, Inc.), Ames Laboratory will further develop and commercialize its concentric-ring high pressure gas atomization (CR-HPGA) gas-die technology with a goal to improve the precision of metal powder production in a desired size range and quality. The successful commercialization of this technology could reduce production cost of metal powders and improve reliability of this industrial process, increasing specialty alloy powder availability for new applications and adoption into additive manufacturing and multiple materials sectors. The project scope is to [1] utilize AMES compressible gas flow and melt break-up models to explore a wide swath of parameter space available for the CR-HPGA technology, identifying the most promising gas-die designs for fabrication, [2] verify and optimize the new gas-die design, fabricate it and select preferred operating parameters by gas-only flow imaging and aspiration pressure measurements, down-selecting gas compositions and atomization parameters for full scale testing, [3] perform pilot-scale atomization trials with Al and/or Cu alloys of a new CR-HPGA gas-die at selected parameters, [4] evaluate gas-die performance by comparing resulting powder size distribution and powder quality attributes with equivalent powders made by conventional close-coupled HPGA technology, and [5] assess (through Praxair partnership) reduction in operational costs of new CR-HPGA gas-die through the use of an inert gas recovery/recycling system. In partnership with Praxair, Inc., the team, led by Ames Laboratory senior metallurgist Iver Anderson, intend to demonstrate the performance of an optimized CR-HPGA gas-die design in a pilot scale atomizer and better understand the design and operational controls to increase overall benefits for precision metal powder production.

Designing linear lattices for round beam in electron storage rings using the solution by linear matrices analysis

For some synchrotron light source beamline applications, a round beam is preferable to a flat one. A conventional method of obtaining round beam in an electron storage ring is to shift its tune close to a linear difference resonance. The linearly coupled beam dynamics is analyzed with perturbation theories, which have certain limitations. In this paper, we adopt the Solution by LInear Matrices (SLIM) analysis to calculate exact beam sizes to design round beam lattices. The SLIM analysis can deal with a generally linearly coupled accelerator lattice. The effects of various coupling sources on beam emittances and sizes can be studied within a self-consistent frame. Both the on- and off-resonance schemes to obtain round beams are explained with examples. The SLIM formalism for two widely used magnet models: combined-function bending magnets, and planar wigglers and undulators, is also derived.

Coherent wiggler radiation impedance at the storage ring cooler for the EIC project

The Electron Ion Collider project is presently under design at Brookhaven National Laboratory. One of the options how to achieve an electron-proton high-luminosity of 10 34 cm –2 s –1 range, is the storage ring cooler concept, which is based on employing a significant amount of the damping wigglers. One of the main concerns, in achieving the required beam parameters, is the collective effects, especially the coherent synchrotron radiation impedance produced by the damping wigglers and its effect on the longitudinal beam dynamics. Low energy of the electrons, E o =149.6 MeV, small vacuum chamber aperture, b=15 mm, small bending radius and a big number of poles make the coherent synchrotron radiation simulations for the damping wiggler with D. Zhou’s CSRZ code, pretty challenging. The obtained numerical results have been compare with a theoretical approach of Stupakov and Zhou. The strong narrow-band impedance, due to a presence of the periodic poles and the vacuum chamber, have been identified and classified. To suppress or detune the high-Q resonance peaks, a design of the damping wiggler with a varied period of length is presented and discussed.

Beam Dynamics Simulations of Transient Beam Loading Effects in the 10GeV EIC Electron Storage Ring

We report on beam dynamics studies of transient beam loading effects in the 10 GeV EIC electron storage ring [1]. The studies are carried out with time-dependent Vlasov-Fokker-Planck simulations performed with the parallel, particle tracking code SPACE [2], which allows to follow self-consistently the dynamics of h bunches, where h in the number of RF buckets, in arbitrary multi-bunch configurations. The specific goal of the numerical simulations is to determine stable RF cavity settings under heavy beam loading. We also study the option to operate with a passive, third-harmonic cavity (3HC) system for bunch lengthening, addressing both stability and the performance limitation due to a gap in the uniform filling pattern for ion clearing.

Design of the Electron Ion Collider Electron Storage Ring SRF cavity

The Electron Ion Collider (EIC) under construction at Brookhaven National Laboratory is a high luminosity collider as the next major research facility for the nuclear physics community. Among the numerous RF subsystems in the EIC, the electron storage ring (ESR) fundamental RF cavities system is one of the most challenging. This system will handle a high beam current of up to 2.5A and replenish up to 10MW of beam power losses from synchrotron radiation and HOM. Variable coupling is required in the cavities due to the wide range of required total RF voltage and beam current combinations. In this paper, we will present the status of the design and future plans.

Characterize the Rings in Protoplanetary Disks Formed by an Eccentric Instability [Slides]

Typical long-term time evolution of gas surface density in a disk undergoing eccentric mode instability (EMI). In a disk with no initial substructures or external perturbers, EMI generates a growing one arm spiral (top right). After EMI saturates, the disk continues to evolve with a long-lived coherent eccentric pattern. If the disk has strong wave damping, the disk is then left with circular rings. Synthesized dust continuum images of some EMI simulations from this IC project show some characteristics similar to the actual PPD images.

Lattice Design of the EIC Electron Storage Ring for Energies Down to 5 GeV

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory will feature an electron storage ring that will circulate polarized beams with energies up to 18 GeV. Recently a study has been undertaken to extend the minimum energy from 6 GeV to 5 GeV. As the solenoid-based spin rotators around the interaction point require specific bending angles that depend on the energy range, this change results in major changes to the geometry. Moreover, avoiding interference of the electron beamline with the other beamlines in the tunnel, as well as with the tunnel walls, is a formidable challenge, especially at the location of the large-diameter superconducting solenoids. In this contribution, the details of the modified spin rotators, geometrical layout, and optics of the revised lattice are presented.

Dynamic Aperture of the PIP-II Accumulator Ring (PAR)

The Proton Improvement Plan-II (PIP-II) will include a superconducting linear accelerator which will accelerate H- ions to 800MeV, at an intensity never seen before. A proposed PIP-II Accumulator Ring (PAR) can reduce the injection losses to the booster, enhance the ramp up of the Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) and support experiments in Dark Sector Physics. When the beam is circulating in PAR at its full intensity, it will then be transferred to the Booster via single turn injection. Strong PAR focusing results in larger phase advances, shorter focal lengths and higher machine tunes, which creates robust beam envelope control. Particles will be able to survive modest excursions from the elliptical phase-space trajectories of linear optics, and any loss of particles would be due to reduced dynamic aperture. The values for tunes and chromaticities are flexible and will continue to evolve as the lattice matures. Since there will be non-linear terms impacting the particles’ trajectories, tracking will include realistic magnetic field errors and installation alignment errors to determine the dynamic aperture as a function of the machine tunes. This will allow us to determine the optimum operating point in phase-space.

Design of a ring cooler for electron ion collider with reverse bends

The high quality electron beam of a ring cooler for the electron ion collider requires strong radiation damping (and thus strong wigglers) to overcome both the intra-beam and the beam-beam scattering. In this paper we present an alternative design, where conventional bends with reversing and alternating directions between horizontal and vertical planes are implemented to satisfy the damping requirements.”

Eddy Current Shielding of the Magnetic Field Ripple in the EIC Electron Storage Ring Vacuum Chambers

The EIC electron storage ring (ESR) has very tight tolerances for the beam position and size stability at the interaction point. The oscillations at the proton betatron frequency and its harmonics are the most dangerous because, for instance, they could lead to unacceptable proton emittance growth from the oscillating beam-beam kick from the electrons at the amplitude of the positional oscillations as low as 10 -4 of the beam size. Even at much lower frequencies, down to the single Hz range, the position oscillations at a few percent level of the nominal beam size were found to be dangerous. These oscillations could have different causes including magnet power supply ripple, mag net vibration, noise in the main and crab RF systems, and some collective instabilities. To specify the acceptable level of the current ripple and noise of the magnet power supplies we need to accurately account for the eddy current shielding by the vacuum chamber, as well as, potentially, by the laminated magnet yokes (considered elsewhere). With some ap proximations, the chamber shielding can be described analytically. The main objective of this note is to derive these analytical expressions and to document the resulting shielding performance of the ESR chamber.

TOLERANCES OF CRAB DISPERSION AT THE INTERACTION POINT IN THE HADRON STORAGE RING OF THE ELECTRON-ION COLLIDER

The Electron Ion Collider (EIC) presently under construction at Brookhaven National Laboratory will collide polarized high energy electron beams with hadron beams with luminosities up to 10^34 cm^?2 s^?1 in the center mass energy range of 20-140 GeV. Due to the detector solenoid in the interaction region, the design horizontal crabbing angle will be coupled to the vertical plane if uncompensated. In this article, we study the tolerances of crab dispersion at the interaction point in the EIC Hadron Storage Ring (HSR). Both strong-strong and weak-strong simulations are used. We found that there is a tight tolerance of vertical crabbing angle at the interaction point in the HSR.

Complete 6D Tracking of a Single Electron in the IOTA Ring

We present the results of the first experiments on 6-dimensional phase-space tracking of a single electron in a storage ring, using a linear multi-anode photomultiplier tube for simultaneously measuring transverse coordinates and arrival times of synchrotron-radiation pulses. This technology makes it possible to fully reconstruct turn-by-turn positions and momentums in all three planes for a single particle. Complete experimental particle tracking enables the first direct measurements of dynamical properties, including invariants, amplitude and energy dependence of tunes with exceptional precision, and chaotic behavior.

Rapid Tuning of Synchrotron Surrogate Model at the Recycler Ring

The 8 GeV proton-storage Recycler Ring (RR) is essential for reaching megawatt beam intensity goals for the DUNE neutrino beam at Fermilab. Custom shims on each RR permanent magnet were designed to cancel manufacturing defects and bring magnetic fields to the design values. Remaining imperfections cause the observed tune variation vs energy to deviate from what is calculated using the design fields. Using the POUNDERS (“Practical Optimization Using No Derivatives for sums of Squares”) optimization method with Synergia in the loop, we demonstrate rapid convergence to a set of additive, higher-order multipole moments of these magnetic shims which reproduce that observed variation, and show that the convergence advantage grows with the parameter-space dimensionality.

Modelling Beam Loss Within the LANSCE Proton Storage Ring

Several upgrades are being considered for the proton storage ring (PSR) at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) to reduce beam loss and thereby reduce the cooldown period of the PSR following a beam run. First, we have considered an increased beam pipe diameter would reduce beam loss due to beam scraping caused by misalignments and tuning errors. However, this would require increased pole-to-pole gap height within the dipoles and quadrupoles, which would change their effective length and alter their fringe fields. The effect of different magnet gaps on the beam optical parameters and on beam loss was studied using the simulation codes MAD-X and PyORBIT. Second, we are developing a detailed particle tracking model within the framework of the simulation package General Particle Tracer (GPT) for the PSR H - stripping system. This model will be used to study the effect of the stripper foil parameters (position, composition, areal density, depth, etc.) on first-turn losses, where most of the observed beam loss and emittance growth occurs due to foil scattering, foil stripping, and Lorentz stripping. The model implements C++ custom elements created to model foil scattering, foil stripping, and Lorentz stripping, as these are not built-in features of GPT. The preliminary results of the MAD-X and PyORBIT simulations, as well as the GPT simulation model, is described in this tech note.

Mechanics of the Ring Tension Test (RTT): A Finite Element-based Investigation

The ring tension test (RTT) is an experimental method for determining mechanical behavior in a material’s circumferential or hoop direction. It is a crucial test for testing anisotropic materials with tube geometry, such as nuclear fuel cladding or irradiated pipes. Several RTT configurations exist, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. However, this test is significantly more complex than traditional tensile testing and can be especially sensitive to small differences and inconsistencies in the test setup and geometry, ultimately affecting the derived mechanical properties. Previous research has focused on method development, and little work has been done on understanding the subtle differences between an ideal test and experiments, specifically when the tests are performed on highly irradiated materials in hot cells. In this work, a finite element-based investigation of the RTT is conducted. Two promising test configurations are investigated, comparing their ability to determine accurate material strengths through plastic deformation. Several non-ideal conditions and uncontrollable effects which are likely to occur during experimental testing such as machining tolerances, variations of specimen geometry from nominal dimensions, rotation of specimens and fixturing, and other test setup discrepancies are studied. The sensitivity of measured strengths to these conditions is presented. A mechanics-based approach to describing and correcting raw data to determine actual strengths is also included for one of the configurations, resulting in a robust correction method with highly accurate material strength measurements. Based on these analyses, the hemicylindrical mandrel configuration is recommended with a gauge region oriented at a 45° angle.

EIC hadron ring longitudinal stability simulations at injection

At the EIC injection energy (23.8 GeV for protons), the hadron beam experiences a relatively strong space charge field. The corresponding wakefield, in conjunction with the wakes from the RF cavities (i.e. the geometrical wakes), may become the cause of single-bunch instabilities, both longitudinal and transverse. In this report, we focus on the longitudinal stability aspect of this picture, using a simplified model for the ring.
