Radiation damage and defect behavior in proton irradiated lithium-counterdoped n+p silicon solar cells

Two lithium-counterdoped n+p silicon solar cells with different lithium concentrations were irradiated by 10-MeV protons. Cell performance was measured as a function of fluence, and it was found that the cell with the highest concentration of lithium had the highest radiation resistance. Deep level transient spectroscopy which showed two deep level defects that were lithium related. Relating the defect energy levels obtained from this study with those from earlier work using 1-MeV electron irradiation shows no correlation of the defect energy levels. There is one marked similarity: the absence of the boron-interstitial-oxygen-interstitial defect. This consistency strengthens the belief that lithium interacts with oxygen to prevent the formation of the boron interstitial-oxygen interstitial defect. The results indicate that, in general, addition of lithium in small amounts to the p-base of a boron doped silicon solar cell such that the base remains p-type, tends to increase the radiation resistance of the cell.

Adaptive p-version based finite element formulations for thermal modeling/analysis of structural configurations

Adaptive p-version based hierarchical finite element formulations in conjunction with a posteriori error estimation concepts are described with emphasis on applicability for thermal modeling/analysis of structural configurations. The basic concepts and formulations of hierarchical p-versiion finite element for thermal analysis are first described. A posteriori error estimation features are utililzed to steer the process of adaptive refinement. Several configurations comprised of one-dimensional structures are evaluated to validate the applicability of the proposed formulations and to demonstrate the potential of the p-version adaptive formulations for thermal modeling/analysis. The methodology offers potential and promises to be an attractive alternative to conventional finite element thermal modeling/analysis approaches.

Derivation of a Tappered p-Version Beam Finite Element

A tapered p-version beam finite element suitable for dynamic applications is derived. The taper in the element is represented by allowing the area moments of inertia to vary as quartic polynomials along the length of the beam, and the cross-sectional area to vary as a quadratic polynomial. The p-version finite-element characteristics are implemented through a set of polynomial shape functions. The lower-order shape functions are identical to the classical cubic and linear shape functions normally associated with a beam element. The higher-order shape functions are a hierarchical set of polynomials that are integrals of orthogonal polynomials. Explicit expressions for the mass and stiffness matrices are presented for an arbitrary value of p. The element has been verified to be numerically stable using shape functions through 22nd order.

P-Cygni features and photospheric velocities

The photospheric velocities implied from the P-Cygni features of H-alpha, H-beta, and H-gamma in SN 1987A differ. This implies that the 'photosphere' relevant to P-Cygni formation may be frequency dependent. To obtain a P-Cygni feature from above a fixed surface, the photons leaving there must not undergo other frequency dependent absorption processes (bound-free or free-free) or be smeared in frequency due to multiple Thomson scattering. The paper delineates different regimes when the frequency dependence of this surface should be manifest, and those when it would not be.

A search for p-mode oscillations of Jupiter - Serendipitous observations of nonacoustic thermal wave structure

Frequencies for the p-mode oscillations of Jupiter have been determined, and infrared brightness temperature fluctuations are used to search for the modes. Measurements of the infrared intensity of the Jovian disk were obtained in a broad bandwidth using a 20-element linear array. No p-mode oscillations were observed at the 0.07-K level in the 8-13-micron brightness temperature. The results suggest that Jovian p modes are not likely to have observable amplitudes. A prominent nonacoustic wave-like structure in the 8-13-micron brightness temperature is found both at 20 deg N and at the equator.

P-T condition fo deformation from fluid inclusions in mylonites

Structural petrology of fluid inclusions in deformed rocks can be used to identify inclusions entrapped during various stages of deformation. Standard thermobarometry on these inclusions can then provide estimates of the P-T (pressure-temperature) conditions of deformation. The application of this technique is illustrated using fluid inclusions in mylonites from the Quetico Fault Zone, Canada. The inferred P-T conditions fall with the P-T field of mylonitisation derived from isotopic, microstructural and phase equilibrium studies.

The spatial distribution of p-mode absorption in active regions

The interaction of solar p-mode waves and active regions has been the subject of recent observational and theoretical investigations. Observations show that up to one-half of the power of incident high-degree acoustic may be absorbed in and around sunspots. In this paper the horizontal spatial distribution of high-degree p-mode absorption in solar active regions is explored. An appropriate Fourier-Hankel transform can be used to detect the mean absorption of waves passing through any given point on the solar surface. By repeating the analysis at multiple positions a map of the absorption can be constructed. A technique for optimal computation of absorption maps is developed and applied to observations of several active regions and an area of quiet sun near disk center. By comparing the distribution of p-mode absorption with magnetograms and line-wing intensity images, it is directly observed that the absorption is not limited to the location of the visible sunspots but is also associated with magnetic fields in the surrounding plage. It is estimated that the absorption efficiency scales roughly with the magnetic flux density, although the absorption appears to saturate inside the strongest fields.

An evaluation of GTAW-P versus GTA welding of alloy 718

Mechanical properties were evaluated to determine statistically whether the pulsed current gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW-P) process produces welds in alloy 718 with room temperature structural performance equivalent to current Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) welds manufactured by the constant current GTAW-P process. Evaluations were conducted on two base metal lots, two filler metal lots, two heat input levels, and two welding processes. The material form was 0.125-inch (3.175-mm) alloy 718 sheet. Prior to welding, sheets were treated to either the ST or STA-1 condition. After welding, panels were left as welded or heat treated to the STA-1 condition, and weld beads were left intact or machined flush. Statistical analyses were performed on yield strength, ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and high cycle fatigue (HCF) properties for all the post welded material conditions. Analyses of variance were performed on the data to determine if there were any significant effects on UTS or HCF life due to variations in base metal, filler metal, heat input level, or welding process. Statistical analyses showed that the GTAW-P process does produce welds with room temperature structural performance equivalent to current SSME welds manufactured by the GTAW process, regardless of prior material condition or post welding condition.

Multipolarization P-, L-, and C-band radar for coastal zone mapping - The Louisiana example

Multipolarization P-, L-, and C-band airborne SAR data sets were acquired over a coastal zone and a forested wetland of southern Louisiana. The data sets were used with field-collected surface-parameter data in order to determine the value of SAR systems in assessing and mapping coastal-zone surface features. The coastal-zone surface features in this study are sediments, sediment distribution, and the formation of new isles and banks. Results of the data analysis indicate that the P-band radar with 68-cm wavelength is capable of detecting the submerged sediment if the area is very shallow (i.e., a water depth of less than one meter). The penetration capability of P-band radar is also demonstrated in the forested wetland area. The composition and condition of the ground surface can be detected, as well as the standing water beneath dense tree leaves.

A study of the asymmetric wind of P Cygni

Results of optical linear spectropolarimetric measurements of the hypergiant P Cygni are presented. The data indicate that both the intrinsic polarization and the position angle vary with time. It is found that, prior to removing the interstellar polarization vector, the polarization varies by 0.642 percent, while the position angle takes on values between 27.0 and 39.8 deg. The wavelength dependence of the polarization curve also changes with time, indicating that the intrinsic polarization curve is not always constant with the wavelength. After a model is determined for interstellar polarization, it is found that the amplitude of the intrinsic polarization of P Cyg varies from 0.04 to 0.48 percent, with a change of 0.12 percent on successive nights. It is inferred from this large variation in the polarization on such a short timescale that the scattering material lies close to the star. Several possible geometries to describe the circumstellar material of P Cygni are presented.

High-voltage 6H-SiC p-n junction diodes

A chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process has been used to produce device structures of n- and p-type 6H-SiC epitaxial layers on commercially produced single-crystal 6H-SiC wafers. Mesa-style p-n junction diodes were successfully fabricated from these device structures using reactive ion etching, oxide passivation, and electrical contact metallization techniques. When tested in air, the 6H-SiC diodes displayed excellent rectification characteristics up to the highest temperature tested, 600 C. To observe avalanche breakdown of the p-n junction diodes, testing under a high-electrical-strength liquid was necessary. The avalanche breakdown voltage was 1000 V representing the highest reverse breakdown voltage to be reported for any CVD-grown SiC diode.

Scattering of p-modes by a sunspot

The acoustic scattering properties of a large sunspot are determined from a Fourier-Hankel decomposition of p-mode amplitudes as measured from a 68-hr subset of a larger set of observations made at the South Pole in 1988. It is shown that significant improvement in the measurement of p-mode scattering amplitudes results from the increased temporal frequency resolution provided by these data. Scattering phase shifts are unambiguously determined for the first time, and the dependence of the p-mode phase shift and absorption with wavenumber and frequency is presented.

High voltage thermally diffused p(+)n solar cells

The possibility of fabricating thermally diffused p(+)n InP solar-cells with high open-circuit voltage without sacrificing the short circuit current is discussed. The p(+)n InP junctions were formed by Cd and Zn diffusion through a 3-5-nm-thick anodic or chemical phosphorus-rich oxide cap layer grown on n:InP:S (with ND-NA = 3.5 x 10 exp 16 and 4.5 x 10 exp 17/cu cm) Czochralski LEC-grown substrates. After thinning the emitter from its initial thickness of 1 to 2.5 micron down to 0.06-0.15 micron, the maximum efficiency was found when the emitter was 0.2 to 0.3 micron thick. Typical AM0, 25 C values of 854-860 mV were achieved for Voc, Jsc values were from 25.9 to 29.1 mA/sq cm using only the P-rich passivating layer left after the thinning process as an antireflection coating.

Stellar models and the brightening of P Cygni

P Cygni is currently in the transition phase between core hydrogen and helium burning. The behavior of the stellar envelope in this phase is strongly affected by the intermittant dominance of hydrogen shell burning. We perform detailed stellar evolution calculations of this rapid transition phase using the most recent Livermore opacities. We find that observations and stellar evolution models agree very well if the initial main-sequence mass of P Cygni was about 60 +/- 5 solar masses. Depending on the mass-loss rate, P Cygni's current mass could be as low as 50 solar masses, which is still about a factor of 2 higher than that predicted by the radiation driven wind theory. Our calculations seem to favor the Schwarzschild criterion for convection over the Ledoux criterion in conjunction with semiconvection.

The p-version of the finite element method in incremental elasto-plastic analysis

Whereas the higher-order versions of the finite elements method (the p- and hp-version) are fairly well established as highly efficient methods for monitoring and controlling the discretization error in linear problems, little has been done to exploit their benefits in elasto-plastic structural analysis. Aspects of incremental elasto-plastic finite element analysis which are particularly amenable to improvements by the p-version is discussed. These theoretical considerations are supported by several numerical experiments. First, an example for which an analytical solution is available is studied. It is demonstrated that the p-version performs very well even in cycles of elasto-plastic loading and unloading, not only as compared to the traditional h-version but also in respect to the exact solution. Finally, an example of considerable practical importance - the analysis of a cold-worked lug - is presented which demonstrates how the modeling tools offered by higher-order finite element techniques can contribute to an improved approximation of practical problems.

Relating P-band AIRSAR backscatter to forest stand parameters

As part of research on forest ecosystems, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and collaborating research teams have conducted multi-season airborne synthetic aperture radar (AIRSAR) experiments in three forest ecosystems including temperate pine forest (Duke, Forest, North Carolina), boreal forest (Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest, Alaska), and northern mixed hardwood-conifer forest (Michigan Biological Station, Michigan). The major research goals were to improve understanding of the relationships between radar backscatter and phenological variables (e.g. stand density, tree size, etc.), to improve radar backscatter models of tree canopy properties, and to develop a radar-based scheme for monitoring forest phenological changes. In September 1989, AIRSAR backscatter data were acquired over the Duke Forest. As the aboveground biomass of the loblolly pine forest stands at Duke Forest increased, the SAR backscatter at C-, L-, and P-bands increased and saturated at different biomass levels for the C-band, L-band, and P-band data. We only use the P-band backscatter data and ground measurements here to study the relationships between the backscatter and stand density, the backscatter and mean trunk dbh (diameter at breast height) of trees in the stands, and the backscatter and stand basal area.
