Aneuploidy induces premature aging in yeast due to defects in Ribosome Quality Control [MoBYSeqData]

Premature aging is a hallmark of Down syndrome, caused by trisomy of human chromosome 21; but the reason is unclear and difficult to study in humans. We used an aneuploid model in wild yeast to show that chromosome amplification disrupts nutrient-induced cell-cycle arrest, quiescence entry, and healthy aging, across genetic backgrounds and amplified chromosomes. We discovered that these defects are due in part to aneuploidy-induced dysfunction in Ribosome Quality Control (RQC). Aneuploids entering quiescence display aberrant ribosome profiles, accumulate RQC intermediates, and harbor an increased load of protein aggregates. Although they have normal proteasome capacity, aneuploids show signs of ubiquitin dysregulation, which impacts cyclin abundance to disrupt arrest. Remarkably, inducing ribosome stalling in euploids produces similar aberrations, while up-regulating limiting RQC subunits or proteins in ubiquitin metabolism alleviates many of the aneuploid defects. Our results raise major implications for other aneuploidy disorders including Down syndrome.

Temperature transducer has high output, is time stable

Compact, lightweight temperature transducer requires no amplification of its output signal and is time stable. It uses the temperature-dependent characteristics of a silicon transistor to provide a zero-to-five-volt signal proportional to temperature.

High-performance RC bandpass filter is adapted to miniaturized construction

Miniaturized bandpass filter with RC networks is suitable for use in integrated circuits. The circuit consists of three stages of amplification with additional resistive and capacitive components to obtain the desired characteristics. The advantages of the active RC filter network are the reduction in size and weight and elimination of magnetic materials.

Digital system detects binary code patterns containing errors

System of square loop magnetic cores associated with code input registers to react to input code patterns by reference to a group of control cores in such a manner that errors are canceled and patterns containing errors are accepted for amplification and processing. This technique improves reception capabilities in PCM telemetry systems.

The helium system of the maser installation at the Goonhilly satellite-communication earth station

A travelling-wave solid-state maser anlplifier is used to provide the first stage of amplification in the receiving system at the communication-satellite earth-station at Goonhilly Downs. While the maser itself was built by an industrial research laboratory, the auxiliary supplies and equipment essential for the operation of the maser were designed and built by staff of the Post Office Research Station. A major part of this auxiliary equipment consists of apparatus for handling the helium refrigerant.
