HIDES (Hybrid Intrusion Detection for Energy Systems) [SWR-19-65]

Hybrid Intrusion Detection for Energy Systems (HIDES) is a conglomerate detector that incorporates three major components: (1) Signature-based detection that involves information technology (IT) related anomaly detection rules, (2) Behavior-based detection that utilizes specially crafted rulesets for detecting abnormal behavior regarding the power system's supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) communication streams, and (3) Learning-based detection that combines SCADA communication with phasor measurements to identify otherwise non-detectible attack vectors. The software itself interconnects intrusion detection engine (IDE) enabling communications between the generated OT and IT alerts with phasor measurements for the learning-based detection system. The resulting detection system can detect a wide array of IT, OT, and physical attacks in a real-time setting.

Modeling Tungsten Boride Neutronics in ORIGEN for Z-Facility

ORIGEN is one of the main transmutation software packages used in nuclear engineering Modeling Tungsten Boride Neutronics in ORIGEN for Z-Facilityproblems. For the case of this study, tungsten borides are studied using a coupled framework between MCNP and the ORIGEN package of scale. The input used four compositions of tungsten boride: WB with natural boron- 10 abundance, WB with 80wt% B-10 per isotope of boron, WB4 with natural boron-10 abundance, and WB4 with 80wt% B-10 per isotope of boron. Isotopic inventories were produced for WB which show the time dependent change up to 2 years after a 6-Month irradiation. This will allow for further studies of the materials to assess things material composition changes, dose contribution, and waste management requirements.

Milestone 49 Report: Batched Sparse LA Phase 5 Implementation

Batched sparse linear algebra operations in general, and solvers in particular, have become the major algorithmic development activity and foremost performance engineering effort in the numerical software libraries work on modern hardware with accelerators such as GPUs. Many applications, ECP and non-ECP alike, require simultaneous solutions of many small linear systems of equations that are structurally sparse in one form or another. In order to move towards high hardware utilization levels, it is important to provide these applications with appropriate interface designs to be both functionally efficient and performance portable and give full access to the appropriate batched sparse solvers running on modern hardware accelerators prevalent across DOE supercomputing sites since the inception of ECP. To this end, we present here a summary of recent advances on the interface designs in use by HPC software libraries supporting batched sparse linear algebra and the development of sparse batched kernel codes for solvers and preconditioners. We also address the potential interoperability opportunities to keep the corresponding software portable between the major hardware accelerators from AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA, while maintaining the appropriate disclosure levels conforming to the active NDA agreements. The presented interface specifications include a mix of batched band, sparse iterative, and sparse direct solvers with their accompanying functionality that is already required by the application codes or we anticipated to be needed in the near future. This report summarizes progress in Kokkos Kernels and the xSDK libraries MAGMA, Ginkgo, hypre, PETSc, and SuperLU.

Payload specialist station study. Volume 3: Program study cost estimates. Part 1: Work breakdown structure

The work breakdown structure (WBS) for the Payload Specialist Station (PSS) is presented. The WBS is divided into two elements--PSS contractor and mission unique requirements. In accordance with the study ground rules, it is assumed that a single contractor, hereafter referred to as PSS Contractor will perform the following: (1) provide C and D hardware (MFDS and elements of MMSE), except for GFE; (2) identify software requirements; (3) provide GSE and ground test software; and (4) perform systems engineering and integration in support of the Aft Flight Deck (AFD) C and D concept. The PSS Contractor WBS element encompasses a core or standardized PSS concept. Payload peculiar C and D requirements identified by users will originate as a part of the WBS element mission unique requirements; these requirements will be provided to the PSS Contractor for implementation.

Probabilistic structural analysis methods for select space propulsion system components

The Probabilistic Structural Analysis Methods (PSAM) project developed at the Southwest Research Institute integrates state-of-the-art structural analysis techniques with probability theory for the design and analysis of complex large-scale engineering structures. An advanced efficient software system (NESSUS) capable of performing complex probabilistic analysis has been developed. NESSUS contains a number of software components to perform probabilistic analysis of structures. These components include: an expert system, a probabilistic finite element code, a probabilistic boundary element code and a fast probability integrator. The NESSUS software system is shown. An expert system is included to capture and utilize PSAM knowledge and experience. NESSUS/EXPERT is an interactive menu-driven expert system that provides information to assist in the use of the probabilistic finite element code NESSUS/FEM and the fast probability integrator (FPI). The expert system menu structure is summarized. The NESSUS system contains a state-of-the-art nonlinear probabilistic finite element code, NESSUS/FEM, to determine the structural response and sensitivities. A broad range of analysis capabilities and an extensive element library is present.

Numerical propulsion system simulation

The cost of implementing new technology in aerospace propulsion systems is becoming prohibitively expensive. One of the major contributors to the high cost is the need to perform many large scale system tests. Extensive testing is used to capture the complex interactions among the multiple disciplines and the multiple components inherent in complex systems. The objective of the Numerical Propulsion System Simulation (NPSS) is to provide insight into these complex interactions through computational simulations. This will allow for comprehensive evaluation of new concepts early in the design phase before a commitment to hardware is made. It will also allow for rapid assessment of field-related problems, particularly in cases where operational problems were encountered during conditions that would be difficult to simulate experimentally. The tremendous progress taking place in computational engineering and the rapid increase in computing power expected through parallel processing make this concept feasible within the near future. However it is critical that the framework for such simulations be put in place now to serve as a focal point for the continued developments in computational engineering and computing hardware and software. The NPSS concept which is described below will provide that framework.

Flight Test of a Propulsion-Based Emergency Control System on the MD-11 Airplane with Emphasis on the Lateral Axis

A large, civilian, multi-engine transport MD-11 airplane control system was recently modified to perform as an emergency backup controller using engine thrust only. The emergency backup system, referred to as the propulsion-controlled aircraft (PCA) system, would be used if a major primary flight control system fails. To allow for longitudinal and lateral-directional control, the PCA system requires at least two engines and is implemented through software modifications. A flight-test program was conducted to evaluate the PCA system high-altitude flying characteristics and to demonstrate its capacity to perform safe landings. The cruise flight conditions, several low approaches and one landing without any aerodynamic flight control surface movement, were demonstrated. This paper presents results that show satisfactory performance of the PCA system in the longitudinal axis. Test results indicate that the lateral-directional axis of the system performed well at high attitude but was sluggish and prone to thermal upsets during landing approaches. Flight-test experiences and test techniques are also discussed with emphasis on the lateral-directional axis because of the difficulties encountered in flight test.

Object-Oriented Control System Design Using On-Line Training of Artificial Neural Networks

This report deals with the object-oriented model development of a neuro-controller design for permanent magnet (PM) dc motor drives. The system under study is described as a collection of interacting objects. Each object module describes the object behaviors, called methods. The characteristics of the object are included in its variables. The knowledge of the object exists within its variables, and the performance is determined by its methods. This structure maps well to the real world objects that comprise the system being modeled. A dynamic learning architecture that possesses the capabilities of simultaneous on-line identification and control is incorporated to enforce constraints on connections and control the dynamics of the motor. The control action is implemented "on-line", in "real time" in such a way that the predicted trajectory follows a specified reference model. A design example of controlling a PM dc motor drive on-line shows the effectiveness of the design tool. This will therefore be very useful in aerospace applications. It is expected to provide an innovative and noval software model for the rocket engine numerical simulator executive.

Launch Control Systems: Moving Towards a Scalable, Universal Platform for Future Space Endeavors

The redirection of NASA away from the Constellation program calls for heavy reliance on commercial launch vehicles for the near future in order to reduce costs and shift focus to research and long term space exploration. To support them, NASA will renovate Kennedy Space Center's launch facilities and make them available for commercial use. However, NASA's current launch software is deeply connected with the now-retired Space Shuttle and is otherwise not massively compatible. Therefore, a new Launch Control System must be designed that is adaptable to a variety of different launch protocols and vehicles. This paper exposits some of the features and advantages of the new system both from the perspective of the software developers and the launch engineers.
