Rapid manufacturing of tailored preforms

A method for rapid manufacturing of three dimensional discontinuous fiber preforms is provided. The method includes the deposition of a polymeric material containing fibers on a surface to form a tailored charge for compression molding. The reinforced polymeric material may be a thermoplastic or a reactive polymer with viscosity low enough to allow flow through an orifice during deposition, yet high enough zero shear viscosity to retain the approximate shape of the deposited charge. The material can be deposited in a predetermined pattern to induce the desired mechanical properties through alignment of the fibers. This deposition can be performed in a single layer or in multiple layers. The alignment is achieved passively by shear alignment of the fibers or actively through fiber orientation control or mixing. The fibers can be of the desired material, length, and morphology, including short and long filaments.

Rapid Generation of a Macroscopic Schrödinger Cat State of Atoms with Parity-Independent Orientation

We show that using the process of one-axis-twist squeezing in an echo configuration, it is possible to control the orientation of the macroscopic magnetic moment of a large number of atoms by manipulating the quantum state of a single atom that is physically isolated from the ensemble. With this control technique, it is also possible to entangle an ensemble with a single atom deterministically, which mimics the thought experiment known as the Schrödinger cat. In addition, this technique would make it possible to generate a mesoscopic Schrödinger cat state for a large number of atoms far more rapidly that the conventional process for generating such a state, with an orientation that is independent of the parity of the number of atoms. Apart from the echo configuration, we have also investigated the behavior of one-axis-twist squeezing for some special values of the squeezing parameter. We find that the squeezing propagator can be expressed as the sum of n rotation operators if the product of n and the squeezing parameter equals pi, where n is a non-zero integer. A direct consequence of this property of one-axis-twist squeezing is that there is a hidden order in a squeezed state generated under this condition even if its Husimi quasi-probability distribution looks irregular.

Scaling Wind Power Innovation Assessment for Rapid Energy Transition with Artificial Intelligence

Planning for energy system decarbonization requires new insights into the potential of renewable technologies, deployed at unprecedented scale, to meet urgent sustainability goals. However, limited scalability of current wind energy research tools restricts characterization of innovation impacts to isolated reference sites, challenging investment and decision making under rapid growth. We demonstrate the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to inform future technology advancement and energy systems design by leveraging a state-of-the-art surrogate model to conduct a series of fleet-wide wind plant layout optimizations for greater than 6,800 projected U.S. onshore buildout locations. We show how innovative wake steering technology can address an array of barriers to large-scale deployment and integration of wind power. Specifically, wake steering reduces required plant area by an average of 18% and could preserve upwards of 13,000 km2 for future greenfield deployment, potentially easing siting challenges associated with wind energy infrastructure. Further, by enabling reduced turbine spacing and increased energy production, flexible operations of wake steering improve levelized cost of energy, particularly for large plants and in land-constrained settings. Finally, optimizations that consider dynamic energy prices can deliver increased power production and revenue capture during high-value (often low-wind) periods, further bolstering plant economics. Our computationally efficient approach offers a pathway to accelerate nationwide geographic evaluation of innovative technologies.

Rapid isolation of cyclotron-produced gallium-68

Methods for rapid isolation of radionuclides (e.g., 68Ga) produced using a cyclotron and methods for recycling of the parent isotope (e.g., 68Zn) are disclosed. In one version of the method, a solution including a radionuclide (e.g., 68Ga) is created from a target including cations (e.g., 68Zn). The solution including the radionuclide is passed through a first column including a sorbent comprising a hydroxamate resin to adsorb the radionuclide on the sorbent, and the radionuclide is eluted off the sorbent. The cations (e.g., 68Zn) are recovered from a recovery solution that has passed through the first column by passing the recovery solution through a second column including a second sorbent comprising a cation exchange resin.

Fabrication of Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells via Rapid Thermal Annealing

Adaptability, lightweight, and low cost of materials make flexible perovskite solar cells essential for the perovskite technology to breach commercial photovoltaic market. Roll-to-roll manufacturing has great potential for high-throughput perovskite manufacturing; however, conventional annealing methods are not capable of producing flexible perovskite solar cells at scale. Rapid thermal annealing (RTA), a radiative method, is utilized on roll-to-roll lines within many different industries and has shown promising potential for perovskite annealing. Here, we introduce a blade-coated perovskite thin film on flexible ITO-coated PET annealed via RTA that reduces post-deposition processing time from ~150 seconds to ~14 seconds. Performance was not sacrificed for scalability as a perovskite solar cell was produced with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.58%.

Development of a Laser Ultrasonics-based Approach for Rapid Screening of High Entropy Alloys

This project utilized a laser ultrasonic technique to systematically study temperature-induced evolution of material properties in a set of interrelated binary alloys and a high entropy alloy (HEA) fabricated using arc-melting and spark plasma sintering processes. This technique involved the use of a nanosecond duration, high-intensity pulsed laser to thermo-elastically generate ultrasonic waves that propagate in the bulk of the metal alloy. Sub-nanometer-scale displacements associated with the propagating bulk ultrasonic waves were detected along the epicenter on the opposite surface of the sample using a 1 GHz bandwidth photorefractive interferometer. Phase transformations and microstructural changes were inferred from the temperature-dependent trends in the bulk acoustic velocities and features in the ultrasonic epicentral waveforms measured in the binary alloys. These inferences were then correlated with electron/optical microscopy observations and predictions using calculations of phase diagrams (CALPHAD). The results showed that the laser-generated ultrasonic pulses were strongly influenced by changes in material microstructure and could accurately track thermally driven phase transformations and detect the presence of microscale heterogeneities (grain boundaries, dendritic structures, etc.) in the set of binary alloy samples. The measurement approach was then applied to a quinary HEA sample for estimating phase transition temperature and determining microstructural heterogeneity. The rapid, non-contact and non-destructive ultrasonic testing approach demonstrated here is amenable to high throughput combinatorial investigations that can be applied to graded composition HEAs produced using advanced manufacturing methods. When paired with atomistic simulations and CALPHAD modeling, this approach can overcome the bottlenecks faced by current material characterization methods in efficiently screening the vast discovery space of HEAs that spans over a hundred million unique quinary alloy compositions.

A laser ultrasonics-based approach for rapid screening of high entropy alloys

This project demonstrates a laser ultrasonics-based characterization methodology for rapid metallic materials design and discovery via in situ determination of phases, microstructures and elastic properties with respect to temperature. Ultrasonic waves are strongly affected by material microstructure, and therefore serve as a facile means to probe elastic properties, phase content and their size distributions and volume fractions. In this study, a laser ultrasonic technique is used to systematically study the evolution of properties in a set of interrelated simple binary alloys and high entropy alloys (HEA). Phase transformations and microstructural changes inferred from the ultrasonic signals will be correlated with electron microscopy data and predictions using calculations of phase diagrams (CALPHAD). The non-contact and non-destructive ultrasonic testing approach developed in this study could overcome several limitations associated with current material characterization methods for materials discovery. It is expected that laser ultrasonics-based methodology developed in this work will be utilized to evaluate novel graded composition HEAs currently being developed at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) using advanced manufacturing methods based on direct energy deposition and spark plasma sintering processes, and contribute to accelerate the discovery of HEAs.

Key Takeaways: First Cohort of Action Plans for Rapid Power Sector Decarbonization

The purpose of this synthesis report is to extract key takeaways from the first cohort of CEM Action Plans for rapid power sector decarbonization, developed by Australia, Chile, the European Union, India, and the United Kingdom. These Action Plans differ in their approach to power sector decarbonization based on the domestic resources available, governance structure, and regional context, among other factors. However, they also share common themes that were emphasized in the collaborative report released at CEM13. This report is not intended to be inclusive of all components in each Action Plan. Rather, this report highlights how select best practices for planning, building, and operating power systems are being implemented differently in these Action Plans, with equal focus given to each jurisdiction. Ministers and stakeholders from other governments with similar decarbonization goals can consider these examples within their own unique context.

A Rapid Sequential Separation Method for Determination of Actinides and TENORM in Fracking Wastes - 20223

With recent advances in unconventional drilling technology in the US and around the world, the risks of environmental contamination and exposure due to technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive materials (TENORM) from fracking wastes have also surfaced. Although the Permian Basin (southeastern New Mexico, western Texas) has long been a modest producer of oil, the advent of fracking technology a decade ago turned it into hot property for producers. A 2018 assessment of undiscovered, technically recoverable continuous oil and gas resources by the U.S. Geological Survey estimates an average 46.3 billion barrels of oil and 281 trillion cubic feet of gas. This is likely to increase the use of unconventional drilling and TENORM generation. TENORM concentrations in oil and gas exploration and production waste can be several hundred to several thousand times higher than background TENORM concentrations. Both the thorium and uranium decay chains contribute to airborne radionuclides arising from the radon gas escaping the ground and subsequently decaying as airborne particulates. Additionally, radon decay products {sup 210}Pb and {sup 210}Po can build up in scale on the internal surfaces of oil and gas handling pipes and in sludge in refineries, becoming potential inhalation and ingestion hazards for workers. Furthermore, southeastern NM is also home to world's only licensed and operating transuranic nuclear waste repository, the DoE's Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). Plutonium isotopes ({sup 239+240}Pu) and {sup 241}Am, are expected to account for more than 99% of the total radioactivity scheduled for disposal in the WIPP repository. Thus, an improved understanding of the environmental fate and transport of TENORM, liberated by unconventional drilling, is essential to assess how best to protect individuals and the environment. In this context, accurate measurement of TENORM and actinides in environmental and biological samples is essential. In this presentation, a new sequential method for the separation and pre-concentration of actinides (Pu, Am, Np) and TENORM (Po, U and Th) derived from oil and gas exploration is proposed. The TEVA method involves a rapid co-precipitation step to remove matrix interferences from the samples, followed by plutonium oxidation state adjustment to Pu (IV) and an incubation period of ∼ 1 hour at 50-60 deg. C to allow the resultant Po (II) to oxidize into Po(IV). The polonium, neptunium, thorium and plutonium are then separated on a TEVA column, while americium and uranium are separated on a TRU column. After separation, the alpha counting source was prepared by micro-precipitation with copper sulfide (CuS) for polonium and neodymium fluoride (NdF{sub 3}) for actinides. The efficiency and reliability of the procedures were tested by analyzing filter, drinking water and frack sand samples. The method is simple, robust and can be performed quickly with excellent removal of interferences, high chemical recovery and very good alpha peak resolution. (authors)

Rapid Detection of Anomalies in Battery Energy Storage System Data

Data analytics is pivotal in assessing the technical characteristics and performance of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), underpinning BESS modeling, optimization, and control. However, raw datasets frequently harbor anomalies from measurement errors and equipment malfunctions, impacting BESS reliability and analysis accuracy To address the challenge, this paper presents a novel methodology for the rapid detection of anomalous charge or discharge cycles within BESS operational data, expediting the cleaning process while ensuring data integrity. We’ve collected diverse and comprehensive real-world BESS operational datasets in collaboration with the Electric Power Research Institute and multiple Washington State utilities. These datasets serve dual roles: enabling comprehensive data exploration and analysis for understanding underlying challenges and method development, while also acting as a vital validation resource, demonstrating practical effectiveness. The proposed method detects anomalies and aids in their resolution, improving system performance characterization precision. It also reveals recurring data anomaly sources, offering insights for data collection and handling enhancement. Practitioners can gain valuable insights from the identified anomalous cycles in the real-world datasets along with the investigative process for root cause analyses and essential data cleaning steps.
