Panel: Practical Issues in Implementing Software Reliability Measurement

Many ways of estimating software systems' reliability, or reliability-related quantities, have been developed over the past several years. In this panel, we discuss practical issues to be addressed in implementing software reliabilty measurement techniques in a production development environment.

Mars Pathfinder Microrover- Implementing a Low Cost Planetary Mission Experiment

The Mars Pathfinder Microrover Flight Experiment (MFEX) is a NASA Office of Space Access and Technology (OSAT) flight experiment which has been delivered and integrated with the Mars Pathfinder (MPF) lander and spacecraft system. The total cost of the MFEX mission, including all subsystem design and development, test, integration with the MPF lander and operations on Mars has been capped at $25 M??is paper discusses the process and the implementation scheme which has resulted in the development of this first Mars rover.

A Stabilized Sparse-Matrix U-D Square-Root Implementation of a Large-State Extended Kalman Filter

The full nonlinear Kalman filter sequential algorithm is, in theory, well-suited to the four-dimensional data assimilation problem in large-scale atmospheric and oceanic problems. However, it was later discovered that this algorithm can be very sensitive to computer roundoff, and that results may cease to be meaningful as time advances. Implementations of a modified Kalman filter are given.

ScanSAR and Precision Processor Implementation at the Alaska SAR Facility

This paper summarizes the algorithm and hardware selection phases of the ScanSAR Processor (SSP) and Precision Processor (PP) implementation task for the Alaska SAR Facility (ASF). The SSP is being designed to specifically process RADARSAT ScanSAR mode SAR data while the PP is being designed to produce high precision image products from continuous mode SAR data from RADARSAT as well as ERS-1,2 and JERS-1. This paper describes the algorithms selected for the SSP and the PP; and reports on the hardware selection process in arriving at the target computing platform for these processors.

Learning in Neural Networks: VLSI Implementation Strategies

Fully-parallel hardware neural network implementations may be applied to high-speed recognition, classification, and mapping tasks in areas such as vision, or can be used as low-cost self-contained units for tasks such as error detection in mechanical systems (e.g. autos). Learning is required not only to satisfy application requirements, but also to overcome hardware-imposed limitations such as reduced dynamic range of connections.

Optical Implementation of Matching Pursuit for Image Representation

We have developed a technique for image analysis, representation, and decomposition. This technique was motivated by Stephane Mallat's matching-pursuit algorithm. We've altered and simplified the mechanics of his algorithm to enable an extremely fast implementation via optical processing. Initial computer simulations show that our algorithm is capable of decomposing and representing a 2-D image as a linear combination of basis images with both high speed and high fidelity.

Implementation of the dawn ion propulsion system

The Dawn ion propulsion system (IPS) was intended to be simply a larger version of the ion propulsion system that flew on Deep Space 1 (DS1). Implementation of this system to meet the needs of the Dawn mission, however, required modification of some IPS components and completely new developments of others.

Simple broadband implementation of a phase contrast wavefront sensor for adaptive optics

The most critical element of an adaptive optics system is its wavefront sensor, which must measure the closed-loop difference between the corrected wavefront and an ideal template at high speed, in real time, over a dense sampling of the pupil. Most high-order systems have used Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensors, but a novel approach based on Zernike's phase contrast principle appears promising. In this paper we discuss a simple way to achromatize such a phase contrast wavefront sensor, using the pi/2 phase difference between reflected and transmitted rays in a thin, symmetric beam splitter. We further model the response at a range of wavelengths to show that the required transverse dimension of the focal-plane phase-shifting spot, nominally lambda/D, may not be very sensitive to wavelength, and so in practice additional optics to introduce wavelength-dependent transverse magnification achromatizing this spot diameter may not be required. A very simple broadband implementation of the phase contrast wavefront sensor results.
