Nanosecond Structural Dynamics during Electrical Melting of Charge Density Waves in 1⁢T-TaS 2

Electrical control of charge density waves has been of immense interest, as the strong underlying electron-lattice interactions potentially open new, efficient pathways for manipulating their ordering and, consequently, their electronic properties. However, the transition mechanisms are often unclear as electric field, current, carrier injection, heat, and strain can all contribute and play varying roles across length scales and timescales. Here, we provide insight on how electrical stimulation melts the room temperature charge density wave order in 1T-TaS 2 by visualizing the atomic and mesoscopic structural dynamics from quasistatic to nanosecond pulsed melting. Using a newly developed ultrafast electron microscope setup with electrical stimulation, we reveal the order and strain dynamics during voltage pulses as short as 20 ns. The order parameter dynamics across a range of pulse amplitudes and durations support a thermally driven mechanism even for fields as high as 19 kV cm -1 . In addition, time-resolved imaging reveals a heterogeneous, mesoscopic strain response across the flake, including MHz-scale acoustic resonances that emerge during sufficiently short pulsed excitation which may modulate the order. In conclusion, these results suggest that metallic charge density wave phases like studied here may be more robust to electronic switching pathways than insulating ones, motivating further investigations at higher fields and currents in this and other related systems.

Signal conditioner test set

A system was developed for testing components contained in a signal conditioning module with a transistor and capacitor included in a circuit. The system includes a housing with a socket into which the module to be tested is plugged. A test switch is provided for selectively connecting a variable load to either a transistor or capacitor in the circuit for testing the operation. A signal generating circuit is provided for generating signals for use in testing the components of the module.

Boolean differentiation and integration using Karnaugh maps

Algorithms are presented for differentiation and integration of Boolean functions by means of Karnaugh maps. The algorithms are considered simple when the number of variables is six or less; in this case Boolean differentiation and integration is said to be as easy as the Karnaugh map method of simplifying switching functions. It is suggested that the algorithms would be useful in the analysis of faults in combinational systems and in the synthesis of asynchronous sequential systems which utilize edge-sensitive flip-flops.

An advanced domestic satellite communications system

An updated traffic projection for U.S. domestic satellite communications service covering a period of 15 years; mid-1980 to mid-1995 was prepared. This model takes into account expected technology advances and reductions in transmission costs, legislative and regulatory changes permitting increased competition, and rising energy costs which will encourage more extensive substitution of telecommunications for travel. The historical development and current status of satellite systems are discussed as well as the characteristics of follow-on systems. Orbital arc utilization, spacecraft configuration for single shuttle launch, Earth station configuration, and system costs are examined. Areas which require technology development include multiple beam frequency reuse antennas, on-board switching, intersatellite links, and ka-band operation. Packing and deployment schemes for enclosing the satellite within the shuttle orbiter bay must also be devised.

Error-Compensated Integrate and Hold

Differencing circuit cancels error caused by switching transistors capacitance. In integrate and hold circuit using JFET switch, gate-to-source capacitance causes error in output voltage. Differential connection cancels out error. Applications in systems where very low voltages sampled or many integrate-and -hold cycles before circuit is reset.

An algorithm for obtaining bang-bang control laws

A new computational method for solving control problems, when it is desired that the control action be bang-bang is presented. A gradient-based algorithm is developed where the switching times are updated to minimize the final state missed distance. The algorithm explains how a change in a switching time propagates through the other switching times and affects the final state. The algorithm is applicable to linear and nonlinear problems, including multiinput systems.

High performance millimeter-wave microstrip circulators and isolators

Millimeter wave systems, phased array antennas, and high performance components all require wideband circulators (and isolators) to perform diplexing and switching, to improve isolation and Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR), and to construct IMPATT diode reflection amplifiers. Presently, most of the millimeter-wave circulators and isolators are available in the configurations of waveguide or stripline, both of which suffer from the shortcomings of bulky size/weight, narrow bandwidth, and poor compatibility with monolithic millimeter-wave integrated circuits (MMIC). MMW microstrip circulators/isolators can eliminate or improve these shortcomings. Stub-tuned microstrip circulator configuration were developed utilizing the electromagnetic fields perturbation technique, the adhesion problems of microstrip metallization on new ferrite substrate were overcome, the fabrication, assembly, packaging techniques were improved, and then successfully designed, fabricated a Ka band circulator which has isolation and return loss of greater than 16dB, insertion loss less than 0.7dB. To assess the steady and reliable performance of the circulator, a temperature cycling test was done over the range of -20 to +50 C for 3 continuous cycles and found no significant impact or variation of circulator performance.

Concentric Regenerative Sorption Compressor

Proposed sorption compressor for cryogenic system features four sorption units. Concentric sorption units alternately connected and disconnected via timed gas-gap thermal switches. During given half cycle, one of C/Kr sorption units operates on waste heat from one of PCO sorption units, which in turn operates partially on waste heat from other PCO sorption unit. Required power equals that of mechanical compressor. Vibrates less, and more reliable because it contains only few moving parts actuated relatively infrequently.

Design and test hardware for a solar array switching unit

This paper describes the control of a pulse width modulated (PWM) type sequential shunt switching unit (SSU) for spacecraft applications. It is found that the solar cell output capacitance has a significant impact on SSU design. Shorting of this cell capacitance by the PWM switch causes input current surges. These surges are minimized by the use of a series filter inductor. The system with a filter is analyzed for ripple and the control to output-voltage transfer function. Stable closed loop design considerations are discussed. The results are supported by modeling and measurements of loop gain and of closed-loop bus impedance on test hardware for NASA's 120 V Earth Observation System (EOS). The analysis and modeling are also applicable to NASA's 160 V Space Station power system.
