Software For Advanced Large-scale Analysis Of Magnetic Confinement For Numerical Design, Engineering & Research (salamander)

As magnetic confinement fusion energy gains traction internationally to enable abundant energy production, designing components for fusion systems is a pressing challenge. During the planned lifetime of a fusion device, components evolve in extreme environments and must withstand large, repeated thermal loads and bombardment by 14 MeV neutrons, plasma ions, and neutral particles (deuterium, tritium, and helium), corrosive conditions, etc. All these physical processes take place simultaneously, interact in intricate ways, and impose important constraints that can affect performance. Experimental data is rare and costly to obtain, making design particularly challenging. Predictive computational frameworks must be an integral part of an accelerated and cost-effective design process by modeling fusion system performance in simulated environments. To better understand component degradation and operational impacts on their performance, the Software for Advanced Large-scale Analysis of MAgnetic confinement for Numerical Design, Engineering & Research (SALAMANDER) is designed as an open-source, fully integrated, multiphysics, multiscale, NQA-1 compliant framework facilitating 3D, high-fidelity fusion system modeling. To that end, SALAMANDER is a MOOSE-based framework, and therefore leverages MOOSE upstream libraries such as PETSc and libMesh to deliver sophisticated finite element, finite volume, and nonlinear solver technology for fusion energy simulations. SALAMANDER couples MOOSE physics module capabilities—such as thermal hydraulics, heat conduction, Navier-Stokes, and thermomechanics—with tritium transport via TMAP8, neutronics via Cardinal, and nascent particle-in-cell capabilities. Direct simulation Monte Carlo methods will be used to address neutral transport near the walls. By coupling all these physics in an integrated application, SALAMANDER will enable high-fidelity modeling of irradiation levels and plasma exposure conditions of plasma facing components and their impact on heat and tritium distributions, as well as the resulting mechanical constraints experienced by the plasma facing components and performance of blanket systems. Furthermore, SALAMANDER will be particularly suited for engineering studies thanks to the stochastic tool module readily available in MOOSE, allowing for extended uncertainty quantification and risk analysis studies. It is also able to use computer-aided design (CAD) meshes to model complex geometries, which is indispensable for fusion systems. SALAMANDER therefore supports design, safety, engineering, and research projects for magnetic confinement fusion systems

Seismic Contingency Auto Generator

This code takes in premade earthquake scenario XML files from USGS, power grid data, and converts them into a contingency file (.con file) that can be used by power grid solvers. Within the .con file are a number (Specified by the user) of contingencies that have randomly failed power transformers based on their likelihood of failure and peak ground acceleration (PGA) value around the transformer. The transformers' likelihood of failure was calculated based on a variety of finite element modeling on various transformer designed for specific transformer voltage classes. Parameters from these FEM were used to create generic fragility curves for transformers within a specific voltage class, which correspond with earthquake PGA values to produced a probability of failure for a given earthquake scenario. More refined versions of this process, such as specifying specific transformer design categories within a voltage class, could also be applied in future iterations of the software.

SPADES (Scalable Parallel Discrete Events Simulation) [SWR-24-99]

SPADES (Solver for PArallel Discrete Event Simulation) is an open-source parallel discrete event simulation (PDES) package built on the AMReX library. Targeted at solving discrete event systems in parallel, this software package aims to be performance portable and scalable on heterogeneous computing architectures, e.g., graphic processing units (GPU). SPADES implements optimistic synchronization with rollback through an implementation of the Time Warp algorithm. An alternative conservative synchronization approach is also implemented using the Lower Bound on Incoming Time Stamp. In our implementation, logical processes are represented as cells in a grid and event messages are represented as particles. SPADES supports various parallel decomposition strategies, including the use of the Message Passing Interface (MPI) and OpenMP threading. All major GPU architectures (e.g., Intel, AMD, NVIDIA) are supported through the use of performance portability functionalities implemented in AMReX. The SPADES software is released in NREL Software Record SWR-24-99 “SPADES (Scalable Parallel Discrete Events Simulation)”.

Graph-based Reversible Evaluation and Tangents Library

GRETL is a C++ library for evaluation, re-evaluation and algorithmic differentiation of functional operations on an arbitrary computational graph with limited memory usage. Similar to popular machine learning frameworks in Python, like PyTorch and JAX, it tracks and stores both operations and output data as functions are evaluated. Once this composition of functions is built up, the entire chain of operations can be back propagated to compute sensitivities of the final result with respect to any number of inputs. In contrast to most machine learning applications, memory usage becomes the bottleneck for back propagation in many physics applications, especially for time-dependent PDEs. Dynamic check pointing becomes essential. An important distinguishing feature of GRETL is its ability to limit the maximum memory usage by automatically dynamic checkpointing the data output for each graph operation (see Wang, Moin, Iaccarino, 2009). During backpropagation, parts of the graph that are no longer in memory are automatically re-evaluated from upstream checkpointed states as needed for derivative sensitivity calculations (or more precisely, for vector-Jacobian products). GRETL is particularly beneficial for applications, such as coupled multi-physics, where deriving adjoint-based sensitivities and managing checkpoint memory across modules becomes onerous. Cases which can be readily handled by the GRETL library include: different time-integration algorithms per physics (e.g., coupled predictor-corrector algorithms, IMEX, etc.), sub-cycling, asynchronous integrators, state dependent timestep sizes, iterative solvers and coupling algorithms, controller algorithms, and more.

Arco (Assembled Resource-Constrained Optimization) is a memory-smart optimization DSL and solver for LP and MIP problems on constrained hardware. The software is an optimization framework built around a KDL-based domain-specific language and a CLI compiler/solver. You write optimization models in .kdl files, and the arco CLI compiles, validates, inspects, and solves them. Language bindings (Python today, more planned) provide programmatic access to the same engine. Built for harder optimization problems on constrained resources, Arco is intentional about every allocation, careful with stack and heap behavior, and relentless about minimizing memory usage so more systems can run real workloads. Arco is built primarily for internal use within our organization. You are welcome to try it, but we make no guarantees about API stability or robustness at this stage
