Searching for solitons in heavy-ion reactions near the fermi energy

Solitons are special shape-conserving hydrodynamical solutions that appear in many areas of physics. Here, we explore the existence of such solutions in microscopic descriptions of the heavy ion reaction 12 C + 28 Si → 12 C*+ 7α in the range E/A = 10 – 65 MeV/u. After recognizing the centrality of the collision and time-reversibility as fundamental requirements for the presence of solitonic 12 C, we utilize the Hybrid α-Cluster model for our analysis with a novel methodology. Our results suggest soliton production for E/A = 25 – 45 MeV/u in the forward direction, with a total cross section being at least in the order of a few μb. This, apart from being encouraging for possible experimental studies, maybe connected to possible toroid states of 28 Si at low angular momenta.

Search for Stable and Low-Energy Ce–Co–Cu Ternary Compounds Using Machine Learning

Cerium-based intermetallics have garnered significant research attention as potential new permanent magnets. In this study, we explore the compositional and structural landscape of Ce−Co−Cu ternary compounds using a machine learning (ML)- guided framework integrated with first-principles calculations. We employ a crystal graph convolutional neural network (CGCNN), which enables efficient screening for promising candidates, significantly accelerating the material discovery process. With this approach, we predict five stable compounds, Ce 3 Co 3 Cu, CeCoCu 2 , Ce 12 Co 7 Cu, Ce 11 Co 9 Cu, and Ce 10 Co 11 Cu 4 , with formation energies below the convex hull, along with hundreds of low-energy (possibly metastable) Ce−Co−Cu ternary compounds. Firstprinciples calculations reveal that several structures are both energetically and dynamically stable. Notably, two Co-rich low-energy compounds, Ce 4 Co 33 Cu and Ce 4 Co 31 Cu 3 , are predicted to have high magnetizations.

A Robotic High-Throughput Grid-Search Platform for Mapping Phase Behavior in Triblock Copolymer–Homopolymer Blends

We present a high-throughput experimental investigation of the phase behavior in triblock copolymers (PS-b-PB-b-PS and PS-b-PI-b-PS) and polystyrene (PS) homopolymer blends as a function of homopolymer molecular weight (MW) and blend ratio. Using a robotic thin-film processing platform (NOVA) integrated with Grazing Incidence Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (GISAXS) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), we systematically mapped the order–disorder transition (ODT) boundaries and domain spacing evolution across a broad MW range (4.0–101.3 kDa) with varying homopolymer loadings (10% to 90%). The results reveal three distinct regimes: low-MW homopolymers, corresponding to the wet-brush regime produced only gradual domain swelling before disordering at high blend ratios (weight fraction); medium-MW homopolymers, corresponding to thedry-brush regime induced significant domain spacing increase up to 80% followed by earlier disordering, while high-MW homopolymers led to macrophase separation with minimal changes in domain spacing. Additionally, coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations confirmed our experimental finding that in the low-MW region, the PS homopolymer uniformly distributed in the PS domain. These findings demonstrate that homopolymer molecular weight critically governs both the extent of domain swelling and the onset of disorder in triblock copolymer systems. This high-throughput platform enables the rapid mapping of composition–morphology relationships and can be integrated with AI/ML tools for designing next-generation nanostructured polymers.

Genome dependent Cas9/gRNA search time underlies sequence dependent gRNA activity

Abstract CRISPR-Cas9 is a powerful DNA editing tool. A gRNA directs Cas9 to cleave any DNA sequence with a PAM. However, some gRNA sequences mediate cleavage at higher efficiencies than others. To understand this, numerous studies have screened large gRNA libraries and developed algorithms to predict gRNA sequence dependent activity. These algorithms do not predict other datasets as well as their training dataset and do not predict well between species. Here, to better understand these discrepancies, we retrospectively examine sequence features that impact gRNA activity in 44 published data sets. We find strong evidence that gRNA sequence dependent activity is largely influenced by the ability of the Cas9/gRNA complex to find the target site rather than activity at the target site and that this drives sequence dependent differences in gRNA activity between different species. This understanding will help guide future work to understand Cas9 activity as well as efforts to identify optimal gRNAs and improve Cas9 variants.

Search for 22 Na in novae supported by a novel method for measuring femtosecond nuclear lifetimes

Classical novae are thermonuclear explosions in stellar binary systems, and important sources of 26 Al and 22 Na. While γ rays from the decay of the former radioisotope have been observed throughout the Galaxy, 22 Na remains untraceable. Its half-life (2.6 yr) would allow the observation of its 1.275 MeV γ-ray line from a cosmic source. However, the prediction of such an observation requires good knowledge of its nucleosynthesis. The 22 Na(p, γ) 23 Mg reaction remains the only source of large uncertainty about the amount of 22 Na ejected. Its rate is dominated by a single resonance on the short-lived state at 7785.0(7) keV in 23 Mg. Here, we propose a combined analysis of particle-particle correlations and velocity-difference profiles to measure femtosecond nuclear lifetimes. The application of this method to the study of the 23 Mg states, places strong limits on the amount of 22 Na produced in novae and constrains its detectability with future space-borne observatories.

Transition metal impurities in silicon: computational search for a semiconductor qubit

Abstract Semiconductors offer a promising platform for physical implementation of qubits, but their broad adoption is presently hindered by limited scalability and/or very low operating temperatures. Learning from the nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond, our goal is to find equivalent optically active point defect centers in crystalline silicon, which could be advantageous for their scalability and integration with classical devices. Transition metal (TM) impurities in silicon are common paramagnetic deep defects, but a comprehensive theoretical study of the whole 3 d series that considers generalized Koopmans’ condition is missing. We apply the HSE06(+U) method to examine their potential as optically active spin qubits and identify seven TM impurities that have optically allowed triplet–triplet transitions within the silicon band gap. These results provide the first step toward silicon-based qubits with higher operating temperatures for quantum sensing. Additionally, these point defects could lead to spin-photon interfaces in silicon-based qubits and devices for mid-infrared free-space communications.
