Graphite-epoxy panel compression strength reduction due to local impact

The effects of low velocity impact on the compressive strength of graphite/epoxy structures are reviewed. Extensive tests were conducted on sandwich beams, laminated plates and stiffened panels. Conditions for failures were investigated by impact tests on statically loaded test specimens. Lightly loaded graphite structures (such as aircraft secondary structure) were insensitive to impact damage. In more heavily loaded structures, (such as wing panels), appreciable reductions in compressive strength occurred. The implications of the tests for structural design are discussed by comparing panel masses for designs where ultimate strains were reduced due to impact considerations with the masses of designs with higher ultimate strains. Preliminary test data are presented to show the possibility of improvements in damage to tolerance achievable by using an alternate matrix material.

Grid and metric generation on the assembly of locally bi-quadratic coordinate transformations

The generation of metric coefficients of the coordinate transformation from a generally curved-sided domain boundary to the unit square (cube) is required for efficient solution algorithms in computational fluid mechanics. An algebraic procedure is presented for establishment of these data on the union of arbitrarily selected sub-domains of the global solution domain. A uniformly smooth progression of grid refinement is readily generated, including multiple specification of refined grids for a given macro-element domain discretization. The procedure is illustrated as generally applicable to non-simply connected domains in two and three dimensions.

The influence of a local wall deformation on the development of natural instabilities in a laminar boundary layer

The natural instabilities which propagate in the laminar boundary layer of a flat plate composed of intermittent wave trains are described. A spectral analysis determines the frequency range and gives a frequency and the harmonic 2 only if there is a wall deformation. This analysis provides the amplitude modulation spectrum of the instabilities. Plots of the evolution of power spectral density are compared with the numerical results obtained from the resolve of the Orr-Sommerfeld equation, while the harmonic is related to a micro-recirculating flow near the wall deformation.

Local effects of partly cloudy skies on solar and emitted radiations

Solar radiation measurements are made on a routine basis. Global solar, atmospheric emitted, downwelled diffuse solar, and direct solar radiation measurement systems are fully operational with the first two in continuous operation. Fractional cloud cover measurements are made from GOES imagery or from ground based whole sky photographs. Normalized global solar irradiance values for partly cloudy skies were correlated to fractional cloud cover.

Density power spectrum in the local interstellar medium

Observational evidence is presented for the existence of interstellar medium electron density irregularities over a wide range of scale sizes. Radio scattering observations associated with the wavenumber range of about 10 to the -11th to 10 to the -6th/m are consistent with a density spectrum of the wavenumber form -3.7 + or - 0.6. At lower spatial wavenumbers (10 to the -16th to 10 to the -18th/m) the power spectrum can be estimated by (1) computation of the density fluctuations near the outer scale of the spectrum, (2) comparison with density irregularities predicted by theoretical models of the interstellar medium, and (3) comparison with observations of the velocity structure function.

Acoustic near field and local flow properties associated with broadband shock noise

Shock noise associated with unheated supersonic jets were investigated using a near field microphone array and a single sensor wedge shaped hot-film probe. Both over and underexpanded cases were investigated using Mach 1.5 and 2.0 convergent-divergent nozzles. Correlation measurements through each shock cell of a single underexpanded case with the Mach 1.5 nozzle were obtained between the hot-film probe and microphone array. The results show for the Mach number cases selected that the probe's response is primarily sensitive to velocity. The results of the hot-film near field microphone correlations show general agreement with certain theoretical models as to the location for shock noise production, although they demonstrate the existence of some large perhaps turbulent structure that collectively interacts and phases the motion of the downstream shocks. The near field microphone correlations demonstrate that downstream shocks dominate shock noise production, and suggests the existence of a Doppler effect in near field of the sources. In addition broadband shock noise is found to also propagate at small angles to the jet axis.

Global and local fluctuations of winter and summer simulations with the GLAS climate model

Winter and summer simulations were carried out with an improved version of the GLAS general circulation model. An improved method of computing the boundary layer fluxes, and a more realistic specification of the albedo of snow and ice covered surfaces were used. Each particular diagnostic quantity was computed from the model data and each of the 15 years of observations in precisely the same way, wherever possible. The reported observational results are averaged over the 15 winters or summers, as appropriate.

Local transformations for multi-input nonlinear systems

In this paper Brockett's feedback invariants of nonlinear systems are generalized to a larger class of transformations. In terms of these invariants, the recent results on linear equivalents of nonlinear systems to the multiple-input case have also been extended.

Propagation of local errors in the solutions of the differential equations for orbital elements

The propagation of errors in the solutions of the differential equations for the orbital elements of perturbed two-body motion is investigated. It is shown that the error in the time-element grows linearly for differential equations for orbital elements when only perturbations are present on the right-hand side, cubically for formulations which have a two-body term on the right-hand side, and linearly for formulations based upon extended phase space Hamiltonians.

The evolution of the mesoscale environment of severe local storms Preliminary modeling results

A mesoscale model is employed for predicting two severe weather events observed during thy 1979 SESAME field programs. Particular attention is given to the development and decay of a low-level jet, to the formation of a mesoscale convective complex (MCC) and its modification of lower- and upper-level circulation, to the formation of mesoscale regions of heavy precipitation, the intensification of surface warm and cold fronts, the formation of drylines, dynamic coupling of upper- and low-level jets, the formation of a mountain wave, and the formation and maintenance of capping inversions. A summary of the physics and parameters of a tornado outbreak and a heavy precipitation event are given for a simple bulk-PBL formulation with no heating. A ten-layer model was demonstrated to be sufficient for generating and maintaining distinct vertical gradients of temperature, moisture, and wind across low-level inversions.

Attitude Control by Localized Outgassing

Attitude control of levitated object achieved by using laser to vaporize selectively sublimate coating. Laser heats material that will sublime or outgas. To obtain torque reaction force vector from subliming material must not pass through center-of-mass of object. Laser provides beam suitable for controlling objects in noncontact manufacturing processes in acoustic levitation chambers.

Collaborative research in tunneling and field emission pumped surface wave local oscillators and amplifiers for infrared and submillimeter wavelengths under director's discretionary fund

Progress is reported in work towards the development of surface wave sources for the infrared and sub-millimeter portion of the spectrum to be based upon electron pumping by tunneling electrons in metal-barrier-metal or metal-barrier-semiconductor devices. Tunneling phenomena and the coupling of radiation to tunnel junctions were studied. The propagation characteristics of surface electro-magnetic modes in metal-insulator-p(++) semiconductor structures as a function of frequency were calculated. A model for the gain process based upon Tucker's formalism was developed and used to estimate what low frequency gain might be expected from such structures. The question of gain was addressed from a more fundamental viewpoint using the method of Lasher and Stern.

The magnifying glass - A feature space local expansion for visual analysis

The Magnifying Glass Transformation (MGT) technique is proposed, as a multichannel spectral operation yielding visual imagery which is enhanced in a specified spectral vicinity, guided by the statistics of training samples. An application example is that in which the discrimination among spectral neighbors within an interactive display may be increased without altering distant object appearances or overall interpretation. A direct histogram specification technique is applied to the channels within the multispectral image so that a subset of the spectral domain occupies an increased fraction of the domain. The transformation is carried out by obtaining the training information, establishing the condition of the covariance matrix, determining the influenced solid, and initializing the lookup table. Finally, the image is transformed.

Modulated Multiple Slit Camera for improved localization of gamma ray bursts

An instrument is described in which a cylindrical modulation collimator is added to one half of a Multiple Slit Camera (MSC) coded-aperture imaging system. The instrument provides gamma-ray burst positions from a single spacecraft that are as precise as the best positions from the long-baseline network of interplanetary spacecraft. The determination of fine positions is described, and the fine-position capability is shown to operate over about two-thirds of the MSC's nearly all-sky field of view. It is noted that the addition of the modulation collimator only slightly reduces the system's sensitivity and can improve the location precision for gamma-ray bursts and slower hard-X-ray transients to about 0.1 sq arcmin.
