Human Machine Interface and Controls Development for a Medium Voltage Solid State Transformer

The demand for a more capable electric power grid has increased due to greater energy generation and consumption. • Controlling energy flow bidirectionally with new technologies such as solid state transformers can meet this demand, improving power quality, efficiency, and grid security. • A human machine interface was created to control a medium voltage solid state transformer.

Interface Box for Dual Power Amplifier Modulators in Main Injector

The Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) aims to enhance the current Fermilab particle accelerator complex to intensify and accelerate more beam. To achieve this, a second power amplifier will be added to the Main Injector (MI) cavities. However, the control unit could only read signals coming from the previous power supplies, so the interface box was designed to facilitate the issue.

Interface Box for Dual Power Amplifier Modulators in Main Injector

The Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) aims to enhance the current Fermilab particle accelerator complex to intensify and accelerate more beam. The project will power the beam as it heads from Illinois to the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) in South Dakota by providing them with neutrinos. To intensify the beam, one of the PIP-II upgrades is to add a second power amplifier (PA) to the existing Main Injector cavities. In turn, this boosts the maximum output power to 400kW per station even though the PIP-II requirement is only 240kW. With more output power, more protons can be accelerated through the particle accelerator and in the case of the DUNE project, this is ideal given that the chance of a neutrino interacting with a proton or a neutron is one in ten billion. The power amplifier is added to the cavity and driven by the modulator. Within the modulator, the control unit receives input signals from the power supplies, moderates they are working properly, and controls the timing of the power up sequence. However, a challenge imposed by an additional PA was that the control unit could only read signals coming from the previous power supplies but not the additional second set. For this reason, the interface box was designed to facilitate the issue.

Power Electronics Materials and Bonded Interfaces - Reliability and Lifetime

The need for reliable bonded interface materials is critical to realize the performance benefits of wide-bandgap devices in power electronic modules, especially in operating temperatures greater than 150 degrees Celsius. In this paper, we investigate the thermomechanical performance of sintered copper (Cu) as a large-area attachment, bonded between Cu baseplates and active-metal-bonded substrates, under accelerated thermal shock (-40 degrees Celsius to 200 degrees Celsius) conditions. In the fabrication phase of the samples, we used different stencil patterns and found out that the grid and stripe patterns resulted in a better outgassing of the residual organics during the sintering process, thereby ensuring a substantially improved bond quality than a full-area print. The paste consisted of Cu microflakes and we performed sintering using a Budatec SP300 sintering press at 275 degrees Celsius with 15 MPa of bonding pressure for 5 minutes in a nitrogen atmosphere. Under accelerated experiments, we monitored the degradation of the sintered Cu bond in the samples through C-mode scanning acoustic microscope (C-SAM) images. To quantify the defect percentage in C-SAM images, we investigated image denoising techniques to exclude the pattern prints. Finally, we cross-sectioned a sample and obtained digital microscope images, which revealed adhesive fracture as the dominant failure mechanism.

Designing a User Interface for Real-Time Magnetometer Data Acquisition

The Matter-wave Atomic Gradiometer Interferometric Sensor (MAGIS-100) is a next-generation quantum sensor designed to search for ultralight dark matter and explore new frontiers in quantum mechanics. Due to the experiment’s sensitivity to magnetic interference, a magnetometer trolley system was developed to scan magnetic fields along a vacuum tube. Interacting with the system required command-line inputs, creating usability challenges. To improve accessibility and streamline data acquisition, I developed a graphical user interface (GUI) using Python and the customtkinter library. The GUI supports real-time data display, state/mode switching, command execution, and CSV file management. I collaborated with another intern to integrate data visualization features into the GUI, allowing users to generate 3D plots of post-acquisition magnetic field data. In the future, I aim to fix the real-time plotting feature as it results in an unresponsive GUI.

A Graphical User Interface for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment Robotic Test Stand

In preparation for DUNE, Fermilab along with six other institutions are testing cold electronics for quality control before components placed in the far detector. We test them by using a robotic arm that places these chips into sockets on a computer board that will test their functionality. Up until now, the chips have been tested using a command line script that drives a state machine to conduct tests step-by-step. In order to lower the skill barrier to conduct tests and to speed up the quality control process, I was tasked to create a graphical user interface that would allow users to use buttons, text boxes, and drop-down menus to input information and tell the testing state machine how to operate. I had to learn about the Python package Tkinter to start the process of widget placement. I further developed a pause feature unused in the previous command line script that would allow the user to shut down testing gracefully, bring the robotic arm to go back to ground state, and go forward or backward a step in the testing process. After completing the basic functionality of the GUI, I started testing production chips with the GUI to debug. Some issues were found, which required me to further develop parts of the inherited state machine code. The code for the GUI has now been pushed into the copy the DUNE/FD_CE git repository and will soon be merged with the official DUNE/FD_CE repository so that the other institutions testing DUNE cold electronics can use and expand upon it.

Tailoring Molecular-Scale Contact at Perovskite/Polymeric Hole Transporting Material Interface for Efficient Solar Cells

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have delivered more than 25% of power conversion efficiency (PCE) and incorporating polymers as hole transporting layers (HTLs) can further enhance the stability of devices towards the goal of commercialization. Among various polymeric hole transporting materials, poly(triaryl amine) (PTAA) is one of the promising HTL candidates with good stability; however, the hydrophobicity of PTAA causes problematic interfacial contact with perovskite, limiting the device performance. Using molecular side-chain engineering, we successfully constructed a uniform two-dimensional (2D) perovskite interlayer with conjugated ligands, between three-dimensional (3D) perovskites and PTAA. Further, employing conjugated ligands as cohesive elements, perovskite/PTAA interfacial adhesion was significantly improved. As a result, the thin and lateral extended 2D/3D heterostructure enabled the as-fabricated PTAA-based PSCs to achieve a PCE of 23.7%, improved from the 18% of reference devices. Owing to the increased ion migration energy barrier and conformal 2D coating, unencapsulated devices with the new ligands exhibited both superior thermal stability under 60°C heating and moisture stability in ambient conditions.
