Implementation of nonreflective boundary condition at the outflow boundary

Numerical techniques for the solution of free surface flows about a disturbance on or near a free surface were developed. Any disturbance moving on or near a liquid surface generates surface waves that propagate away from the disturbance. The potential flow problems in which the evolution of free surface waves is the principal phenomenon of interest are considered. The distinct feature of these problems is that the position of the surface is also unknown and is to be determined as part of the solution. Two boundary conditions are required at the free surface since there are two unknown functions there, the free surface height and the potential function. The required boundary conditions are satisfied by the kinematic condition which states that no flow can cross the surface and the dynamic condition which matches the fluid pressure to the pressure acting on the surface through Bernoulli's equation.

Fast polynomial transform and its implementation by computer

A fast polynomial transform (FPT) algorithm for computing two-dimensional cyclic convolutions on a general-purpose computer is demonstrated and compared with the FFT approach. An FPT program for two-dimensional convolutions written in FORTRAN is shown to be 20% faster than the conventional FFT algorithm. This higher speed advantage makes the FPT algorithm a candidate for many two-dimensional digital image filtering applications.

Practical implementation of the double linear damage rule and damage curve approach for treating cumulative fatigue damage

Simple procedures are given for treating cumulative fatigue damage under complex loading history using either the damage curve concept or the double linear damage rule. A single equation is given for use with the damage curve approach; each loading event providing a fraction of damage until failure is presumed to occur when the damage sum becomes unity. For the double linear damage rule, analytical expressions are given for determining the two phases of life. The procedure comprises two steps, each similar to the conventional application of the commonly used linear damage rule. Once the sum of cycle ratios based on Phase I lives reaches unity, Phase I is presumed complete, and further loadings are summed as cycle ratios based on Phase II lives. When the Phase II sum attains unity, failure is presumed to occur. It is noted that no physical properties or material constants other than those normally used in a conventional linear damage rule analysis are required for application of either of the two cumulative damage methods described. Illustrations and comparisons are discussed for both methods.

Computer-implemented remote sensing techniques for measuring coastal productivity and nutrient transport systems

An automatic technique has been developed to measure marsh plant production by inference from a species classification derived from Landsat MSS data. A separate computer technique has been developed to calculate the transport path length of detritus and nutrients from their point of origin in the marsh to the shoreline from Landsat data. A nutrient availability indicator, the ratio of production to transport path length, was derived for each marsh-identified Landsat cell. The use of a data base compatible with the Landsat format facilitated data handling and computations.

Research issues in implementing remote presence in teleoperator control

The concept of remote presence in telemanipulation is presented. A conceptual design of a prototype teleoperator system incorporating remote presence is described. The design is presented in functional terms, sensor, display, and control subsystem. An intermediate environment, in which the human operator is made to feel present, is explicated. The intermediate environment differs from the task environment due to the quantity and type of information presented to an operator and due to scaling factors protecting the operator from the hazards of the task environment. Potential benefits of remote presence systems, both for manipulation and for the study of human cognition and preception are discussed.

Design and implementation of a telecommunication interface for the TAATM/TCV real-time experiment

The traffic situation display experiment of the terminal configured vehicle (TCV) research program requires a bidirectional data communications tie line between an computer complex. The tie line is used in a real time environment on the CYBER 175 computer by the terminal area air traffic model (TAATM) simulation program. Aircraft position data are processed by TAATM with the resultant output sent to the facility for the generation of air traffic situation displays which are transmitted to a research aircraft.

The processing of IMU data in ENTREE implementation and preliminary results

It is demonstrated that the shuttle entry trajectory can be accurately represented in ENTREE with IMU data available postflight. The IMU data consist of platform to body quaternions, and accumulated sensed velocities in mean of fifty (M50) coordinates approximately every second. The preprocessing software required to incorporate the IMU data in ENTREE is described as well as the relatively minor code changes to the ENTREE program itself required to process the IMU data. Code changes to the ENTREE program and input tape data format and content changes are described.

Low cost Czochralski crystal growing technology. Near implementation of the flat plate photovoltaic cost reduction of the low cost solar array project

Equipment developed for the manufacture of over 100 kg of silicon ingot from one crucible by rechanging from another crucible is described. Attempts were made to eliminate the cost of raising the furnace temperature to 250 C above the melting point of silicon by using an RF coil to melt polycrystalline silicon rod as a means of rechanging the crucible. Microprocessor control of the straight growth process was developed and domonstrated for both 4 inch and 6 inch diameter. Both meltdown and melt stabilization processes were achieved using operator prompting through the microprocessor. The use of the RF work coil in poly rod melting as a heat sink in the accelerated growth process was unsuccessful. The total design concept for fabrication and interfacing of the total cold crucible system was completed.

An analysis of a nonlinear instability in the implementation of a VTOL control system

The contributions to nonlinear behavior and unstable response of the model following yaw control system of a VTOL aircraft during hover were determined. The system was designed as a state rate feedback implicit model follower that provided yaw rate command/heading hold capability and used combined full authority parallel and limited authority series servo actuators to generate an input to the yaw reaction control system of the aircraft. Both linear and nonlinear system models, as well as describing function linearization techniques were used to determine the influence on the control system instability of input magnitude and bandwidth, series servo authority, and system bandwidth. Results of the analysis describe stability boundaries as a function of these system design characteristics.

Implementing automatic geographic referencing in Utah

Efforts to use a fully integrated approach to remote sensing in Utah include a realization that data and information are also resources to be managed. A possibility that information acquired for a specific use such as geological application may be of use to others, for instance, to the highway department. Utah is trying to establish a core operation within the state to make some upfront investment in hardware, software, and technical expertise, sufficient to make the operational people in the field aware of what can be done. The key to the operation is to facilitate, coordinate, and educate, so agencies can act for themselves based on their needs, desires, capabilities, and budget.

Implementation of context independent code on a new array processor: The Super-65

The feasibility of rewriting standard uniprocessor programs into code which contains no context-dependent branches is explored. Context independent code (CIC) would contain no branches that might require different processing elements to branch different ways. In order to investigate the possibilities and restrictions of CIC, several programs were recoded into CIC and a four-element array processor was built. This processor (the Super-65) consisted of three 6502 microprocessors and the Apple II microcomputer. The results obtained were somewhat dependent upon the specific architecture of the Super-65 but within bounds, the throughput of the array processor was found to increase linearly with the number of processing elements (PEs). The slope of throughput versus PEs is highly dependent on the program and varied from 0.33 to 1.00 for the sample programs.
