Manual for Program PSTRESS: Peel stress computation

Described is the use of the interactive FORTRAN computer program PSTRESS, which computes a closed form solution for two bonded plates subjected to applied moments, vertical shears, and in-plane forces. The program calculates in-plane stresses in the plates, deflections of the plates, and peel and shear stresses in the adhesive. The document briefly outlines the analytical method used by PSTRESS, describes the input and output of the program, and presents a sample analysis. The results of the latter are shown to be within a few percent of results obtained using a NASTRAN finite element analysis. An appendix containing a listing of PSTRESS is included.

Performance and evaluation of the Viking lander camera performance prediction program

A computer program is described for predicting the performance of the Viking lander cameras. The predictions are primarily concerned with two objectives: (1) the picture quality of a reference test chart (of which there are three on each lander) to aid in diagnosing camera performance; and (2) the picture quality of cones with surface properties of a natural terrain to aid in predicting favorable illumination and viewing geometries and operational camera commands. Predictions made with this program are verified by experimental data obtained with a Viking-like laboratory facsimile camera.

Program manual for the Eppler airfoil inversion program

A computer program is described for calculating the profile of an airfoil as well as the boundary layer momentum thickness and energy form parameter. The theory underlying the airfoil inversion technique developed by Eppler is discussed.

Three one-dimensional structural heating programs

Two computer programs for calculating profiles in a ten-element structure consisting of up to ten materials are presented, along with a third program for calculating the mean temperature for a payload container placed in an orbiting vehicle cargo bay. The three programs are related by the sharing of a common analytical technique; the energy balance is based upon one-dimensional heat transfer. The first program, NQLDW112, assumes a non-ablating surface. NQLDW117 is very similar but allows the outermost element to ablate. NQLDW040 calculates an average temperature profile through an idealized model of the real payload cannister and contents in the cargo bay of an orbiting vehicle.

Wing shape optimization for maximum cross-country speed, with mathematical programming

A computer program was developed to calculate numerically the speed and circling polars of an aircraft when the lift and drag characteristics of the wing airfoils are known. The planform of the wing is described by variables which are optimized so that the cross-country speed of the glider is maximum for the particular type of thermal model. Two thermal models are compared and shown that with a greater wing area than now normally used the performance can be increased.

A simulation exercise of a cavity-type solar receiver using the HEAP program

A computer program has been developed at JPL to support the advanced studies of solar receivers in high concentration solar-thermal-electric power plants. This work presents briefly the program methodology, input data required, expected output results, capabilities and limitations. The program was used to simulate an existing 5 kwt experimental receiver of a cavity type. The receiver is located at the focus of a paraboloid dish and is connected to a Stirling engine. Both steady state and transient performance simulation were given. Details about the receiver modeling were also presented to illustrate the procedure followed. Simulated temperature patterns were found in good agreement with test data obtained by high temperature thermocouples. The simulated receiver performance was extrapolated to various operating conditions not attained experimentally. The results of the parameterization study were fitted to a general performance expression to determine the receiver characteristic constraints. The latter were used to optimize the receiver operating conditions to obtain the highest overall conversion efficiency.
