Distributed computer taxonomy based on O/S structure

The taxonomy considers the resource structure at the operating system level. It compares a communication based taxonomy with the new taxonomy to illustrate how the latter does a better job when related to the client's view of the distributed computer. The results illustrate the fundamental features and what is required to construct fully distributed processing systems. The problem of using network computers on the space station is addressed. A detailed discussion of the taxonomy is not given here. Information is given in the form of charts and diagrams that were used to illustrate a talk.

Heterogeneous distributed query processing: The DAVID system

The objective of the Distributed Access View Integrated Database (DAVID) project is the development of an easy to use computer system with which NASA scientists, engineers and administrators can uniformly access distributed heterogeneous databases. Basically, DAVID will be a database management system that sits alongside already existing database and file management systems. Its function is to enable users to access the data in other languages and file systems without having to learn the data manipulation languages. Given here is an outline of a talk on the DAVID project and several charts.

Supercomputing on massively parallel bit-serial architectures

Research on the Goodyear Massively Parallel Processor (MPP) suggests that high-level parallel languages are practical and can be designed with powerful new semantics that allow algorithms to be efficiently mapped to the real machines. For the MPP these semantics include parallel/associative array selection for both dense and sparse matrices, variable precision arithmetic to trade accuracy for speed, micro-pipelined train broadcast, and conditional branching at the processing element (PE) control unit level. The preliminary design of a FORTRAN-like parallel language for the MPP has been completed and is being used to write programs to perform sparse matrix array selection, min/max search, matrix multiplication, Gaussian elimination on single bit arrays and other generic algorithms. A description is given of the MPP design. Features of the system and its operation are illustrated in the form of charts and diagrams.

Video image processing

Current technology projections indicate a lack of availability of special purpose computing for Space Station applications. Potential functions for video image special purpose processing are being investigated, such as smoothing, enhancement, restoration and filtering, data compression, feature extraction, object detection and identification, pixel interpolation/extrapolation, spectral estimation and factorization, and vision synthesis. Also, architectural approaches are being identified and a conceptual design generated. Computationally simple algorithms will be research and their image/vision effectiveness determined. Suitable algorithms will be implimented into an overall architectural approach that will provide image/vision processing at video rates that are flexible, selectable, and programmable. Information is given in the form of charts, diagrams and outlines.

An optical disk archive for a data base management system

An overview is given of a data base management system that can catalog and archive data at rates up to 50M bits/sec. Emphasis is on the laser disk system that is used for the archive. All key components in the system (3 Vax 11/780s, a SEL 32/2750, a high speed communication interface, and the optical disk) are interfaced to a 100M bits/sec 16-port fiber optic bus to achieve the high data rates. The basic data unit is an autonomous data packet. Each packet contains a primary and secondary header and can be up to a million bits in length. The data packets are recorded on the optical disk at the same time the packet headers are being used by the relational data base management software ORACLE to create a directory independent of the packet recording process. The user then interfaces to the VAX that contains the directory for a quick-look scan or retrieval of the packet(s). The total system functions are distributed between the VAX and the SEL. The optical disk unit records the data with an argon laser at 100M bits/sec from its buffer, which is interfaced to the fiber optic bus. The same laser is used in the read cycle by reducing the laser power. Additional information is given in the form of outlines, charts, and diagrams.

Optimizing the antenna system of a microwave space power station: Implications for the selection of operating power, frequency and antenna size

A design for a space power station that is to transmit power to the surface of a planet via high powered microwaves should commence with the optimum design of the transmitting and receiving antenna combination to be employed. Once one has assured that the desired amount of power has been transferred (which, after all, is the prupose of any power transmission system), one can, from the constraints imposed by such a design, taylor other parameters of the system such as antenna sizes and weights, power density in the planet's atmosphere (e.g., to avoid electrical breakdown), and frequency of operation. It is the purpose of this brief analysis to provide the working equations of such an optimized antenna system, and to give examples of their use. Related problems that should be analyzed in the future will then be discussed and a flow chart of the indicated order of priority presented. The analysis given here differs from previous work on this subject in that the development given will allow analytical expressions to be obtained for the relevant parameters. This is made possible by employing an approximation procedure to be given during the exposition.

An atlas of photospheric magnetic field observations and computed coronal magnetic fields: 1976-1985

Daily magnetogram observations of the large-scale photospheric magnetic field have been made at the John M. Wilcox Solar Observatory at Stanford since May of 1976. These measurements provide a homogeneous record of the changing solar field through most of solar cycle 21. Using the photospheric data, the configuration of the coronal and heliospheric fields can be calculated using a Potential Field-Source Surface model. This provides a three-dimensional picture of the heliospheric field evolution during the solar cycle. This paper announces the publication of UAG Report No. 94, an Atlas containing the complete set of synoptic charts of the measured photospheric magnetic field, the computed field at the source surface, and the coefficients of the multipole expansion of the coronal field. The general underlying structures of the solar and heliospheric fields, which determine the environment for solar-terrestrial relations and provide the context within which solar activity related events occur, can be approximated from these data.

Analysis of remote measurements of tropospheric carbon monoxide concentrations made during the 1979 Summer Monsoon Experiment (MONEX)

Mixing ratios of tropospheric CO as measured by an aircraft-mounted radiometer over Saudi Arabia, the Arabian Sea, and northern India during May and June 1979 are reported. During early May, exceptionally high CO levels were detected over Saudi Arabia, and strong horizontal gradients in CO mixing ratios were seen to develop over a period of several days. Over the Arabian Sea, mixing ratios of the order of 150 parts per billion by volume were observed before the monsoon onset, and a pronounced decrease in CO was detected toward the equator. Subsequent measurements after the monsoon had become established revealed a consistent decrease in CO mixing ratio across this region. Analysis of aircraft dropsonde data and constant pressure daily streamline charts lend strong support to the hypothesis that this reduction is associated with the influx of CO-poor Southern Hemisphere air in the monsoon southwesterlies.
