Parameter estimation supplement to the Mission Analysis Evaluation and Space Trajectory Operations program (MAESTRO)

This Parameter Estimation Supplement describes the PEST computer program and gives instructions for its use in determination of lunar gravitation field coefficients. PEST was developed for use in the RAE-B lunar orbiting mission as a means of lunar field recovery. The observations processed by PEST are short-arc osculating orbital elements. These observations are the end product of an orbit determination process obtained with another program. PEST's end product it a set of harmonic coefficients to be used in long-term prediction of the lunar orbit. PEST employs some novel techniques in its estimation process, notably a square batch estimator and linear variational equations in the orbital elements (both osculating and mean) for measurement sensitivities. The program's capabilities are described, and operating instructions and input/output examples are given. PEST utilizes MAESTRO routines for its trajectory propagation. PEST's program structure and subroutines which are not common to MAESTRO are described. Some of the theoretical background information for the estimation process, and a derivation of linear variational equations for the Method 7 elements are included.

Crystallographic and general use programs for the XDS Sigma 5 computer

Programs in basic FORTRAN 4 are described, which fall into three catagories: (1) interactive programs to be executed under time sharing (BTM); (2) non interactive programs which are executed in batch processing mode (BPM); and (3) large non interactive programs which require more memory than is available in the normal BPM/BTM operating system and must be run overnight on a special system called XRAY which releases about 45,000 words of memory to the user. Programs in catagories (1) and (2) are stored as FORTRAN source files in the account FSNYDER. Programs in catagory (3) are stored in the XRAY system as load modules. The type of file in account FSNYDER is identified by the first two letters in the name.

Mariner/Jupiter/Saturn navigation in the presence of massive planetary satellites

Orbit determination accuracies attainable during a Mariner/Jupiter/Saturn encounter have been established by means of covariance analyses. Advanced earth-based multistation radiometric data, optical data consisting of star/satellite pictures provided by a narrow-angle TV camera on board the spacecraft, and batch sequential filtering methods were employed. An evaluation of sequential filter sensitivities to errors in modeling small nongravitational spacecraft accelerations is presented. Selected covariances developed in the orbit determination analysis are used in an investigation of the trajectory correction costs associated with a close Ganymede encounter. The 99 percentile Delta V contours in the Ganymede aiming plane are obtained for satellite encounters before or after Jupiter closed approach, and the sources of the dominant contributions to the Delta V costs are identified.

A man in the loop trajectory optimization program (MILTOP)

An interactive trajectory optimization program is developed for use in initial fixing of launch configurations. The program is called MILTOP for Man-In-the-Loop-Trajectory Optimization-Program. The program is designed to facilitate quick look studies using man-machine decision combinations to reduce the time required to solve a given problem. MILTOP integrates the equations of motion of a point-mass in 3-Dimensions with drag as the only aerodynamic force present. Any point in time at which an integration step terminates, may be used as a decision-break-point, with complete user control over all variables and routines at this point. Automatic phases are provided for different modes of control: vertical rise, pitch-over, gravity turn, chi-freeze and control turn. Stage parameters are initialized from a separate routine so the user may fly as many stages as his problem demands. The MILTOP system uses both interactively on storage scope consoles, or in batch mode with numerical output on the live printer.

Outer planet mission guidance and navigation for spinning spacecraft

The orbit determination accuracies, maneuver results, and navigation system specification for spinning Pioneer planetary probe missions are analyzed to aid in determining the feasibility of deploying probes into the atmospheres of the outer planets. Radio-only navigation suffices for a direct Saturn mission and the Jupiter flyby of a Jupiter/Uranus mission. Saturn ephemeris errors (1000 km) plus rigid entry constraints at Uranus result in very high velocity requirements (140 m/sec) on the final legs of the Saturn/Uranus and Jupiter/Uranus missions if only Earth-based tracking is employed. The capabilities of a conceptual V-slit sensor are assessed to supplement radio tracking by star/satellite observations. By processing the optical measurements with a batch filter, entry conditions at Uranus can be controlled to acceptable mission-defined levels (+ or - 3 deg) and the Saturn-Uranus leg velocity requirements can be reduced by a factor of 6 (from 139 to 23 m/sec) if nominal specified accuracies of the sensor can be realized.

A study of the relative effectiveness and cost of computerized information retrieval in the interactive mode

Results of a number of experiments to illuminate the relative effectiveness and costs of computerized information retrieval in the interactive mode are reported. It was found that for equal time spent in preparing the search strategy, the batch and interactive modes gave approximately equal recall and relevance. The interactive mode however encourages the searcher to devote more time to the task and therefore usually yields improved output. Engineering costs as a result are higher in this mode. Estimates of associated hardware costs also indicate that operation in this mode is more expensive. Skilled RECON users like the rapid feedback and additional features offered by this mode if they are not constrained by considerations of cost.

Titanium honeycomb acoustic lining structural and thermal test report

The results are presented of static, fatigue and thermal testing of titanium honeycomb acoustic panels representing the acoustic tailpipe for the Pratt and Whitney Aircraft JT8D Refan engine which is being studied for use on the Boeing 727-200 airplane. Test specimens represented the engine and tailpipe flange joints, the rail to which the thrust reverser is attached and shear specimens of the tailpipe honeycomb. Specimens were made in four different batches with variations in configuration, materials and processes in each. Static strength of all test specimens exceeded the design ultimate load requirements. Fatigue test results confirmed that aluminum brazed titanium, as used in the Refan tailpipe design, meets the fatigue durability objectives. Quality of welding was found to be critical to life, with substandard welding failing prematurely, whereas welding within the process specification exceeded the panel skin life. Initial fatigue testing used short grip length bolts which failed prematurely. These were replaced with longer bolts and subsequent testing demonstrated the required life. Thermal tests indicate that perforated skin acoustic honeycomb has approximately twice the heat transfer of solid skin honeycomb.

A study of application of remote sensing to river forecasting. Volume 2: Detailed technical report, NASA-IBM streamflow forecast model user's guide

The Model is described along with data preparation, determining model parameters, initializing and optimizing parameters (calibration) selecting control options and interpreting results. Some background information is included, and appendices contain a dictionary of variables, a source program listing, and flow charts. The model was operated on an IBM System/360 Model 44, using a model 2250 keyboard/graphics terminal for interactive operation. The model can be set up and operated in a batch processing mode on any System/360 or 370 that has the memory capacity. The model requires 210K bytes of core storage, and the optimization program, OPSET (which was used previous to but not in this study), requires 240K bytes. The data band for one small watershed requires approximately 32 tracks of disk storage.

Accuracy of estimating the masses of Phobos and Deimos from multiple Viking orbiter encounters

The problem was investigated of estimating the masses of Phobos and Deimos from Doppler and onboard optical measurements during the Viking extended mission. A Kalman filter was used to analyze the effects of gravitational uncertainties and nongravitational accelerations. These accelerations destroy the dynamical integrity of the orbit, and multibatch or limited memory filtering is preferred to single batch processing. Optical tracking is essential to improve the relative orbit geometry. The masses can be determined to about 10% and 25% respectively for Phobos and Deimos, assuming satellite densities of about 3 gr/cu cm.

Hypersonic research engine project. Phase 2: Aerothermodynamic Integration Model (AIM) data reduction computer program, data item no. 54.16

The data reduction program used to analyze the performance of the Aerothermodynamic Integration Model is described. Routines to acquire, calibrate, and interpolate the test data, to calculate the axial components of the pressure area integrals and the skin function coefficients, and to report the raw data in engineering units are included along with routines to calculate flow conditions in the wind tunnel, inlet, combustor, and nozzle, and the overall engine performance. Various subroutines were modified and used to obtain species concentrations and transport properties in chemical equilibrium at each of the internal and external engine stations. It is recommended that future test plans include the configuration, calibration, and channel assignment data on a magnetic tape generated at the test site immediately before or after a test, and that the data reduction program be designed to operate in a batch environment.

A procedure for standardization of color infrared film response

Various problems with color infrared film used for remote sensing applications which relate to the instability or variability of the relative sensitivities of the dye layers within the film and the resultant variations in color balance are indicated. A procedure developed and utilized to optimize film response and to achieve more consistent results is described. The procedure establishes a sensitometric aim point with which all new batches of film are compared. Through the use of color compensation filters and change in basic exposure, the new film is exposed to produce imagery with the response characteristics of the aim curves.

An adaptive maneuvering logic computer program for the simulation of one-on-one air-to-air combat. Volume 1: General description

A technique for computer simulation of air combat is described. Volume 1 decribes the computer program and its development in general terms. Two versions of the program exist. Both incorporate a logic for selecting and executing air combat maneuvers with performance models of specific fighter aircraft. In the batch processing version the flight paths of two aircraft engaged in interactive aerial combat and controlled by the same logic are computed. The realtime version permits human pilots to fly air-to-air combat against the adaptive maneuvering logic (AML) in Langley Differential Maneuvering Simulator (DMS). Volume 2 consists of a detailed description of the computer programs.
