Randomized algorithms for accelerating linear algebraic computations

The project supported the development of new methodologies for performing matrix computations that form key building blocks in modern scientific computing, such as low rank approximation of matrices, and efficient representations of global operators that arise in simulations of physical phenomena.

Advances in Image-Domain Multi-Resolution and Super-Resolution Algorithms for Industrial X-Ray Computed Tomography: A Literature Survey and New Insights

Industrial X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT) is a nondestructive method for inspection and character ization of materials and parts. XCT captures images of a part from various angles, and these images are then used to construct Three-Dimensional (3D) representations of that part. This method enables assessing the quality of the parts, identifying defects and understanding their physical properties without damaging them.

Scalable Algorithms for Inverse Problems With High-Dimensional Parameter Spaces

Inverse problems, which involve inferring unknown parameters from observed data, present significant computational challenges, especially in large-scale settings with high-dimensional unknown parameters and nonlinear relationships between the unknowns and observations. Bayesian inference provides an approach for addressing these problems, often relying on sequential sampling methods like Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) to approximate the posterior distribution of the parameters. However, MCMC methods become computationally demanding as the dimensionality of the problem increases, particularly in large-scale systems where likelihood evaluations rely on solving partial differential equations (PDEs) on large spatial domains with finely resolved meshes. To overcome these limitations, recent advancements have focused on designing scalable computa tional techniques – for both PDE simulations and sampling strategies – to make Bayesian methods feasible for high-dimensional problems.

Rapid CFD Using Machine Learning Algorithms (CRADA Final Report)

This is a collaborative effort between Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC as manager and operator of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (“LLNL”) and Guardian Glass, LLC ("Guardian Glass") to develop a fast-running emulator of the reactive Computational Fluid Dynamics (“CFD”) simulations needed to understand the complex reactions and flows in the glass melting, fining, and forming subprocesses. This CRADA project is sponsored under the High-Performance Computing for Manufacturing (“HPC4Mfg”) Program of the Department of Energy’s Advanced Manufacturing Office (“AMO”) within the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (“EERE”) Office.

Low-latency quantum control using AI algorithms on cryogenic microelectronics platforms

Superconducting quantum computers are a particular technology that involve the realization of qubits by means of LC circuits with a Josephson junction. As shown in Fig. 1, this latter addition has the effect of introducing a nonlinearity (anharmonicity) that makes the frequency spacing between each energy level non-uniform. This is a desired effect for separating the two lowest levels, used for computation, from the higher ones, that are theoretically infinite and which are not desired to be used.
