The effect of timing errors in optical digital systems.

The use of digital transmission with narrow light pulses appears attractive for data communications, but carries with it a stringent requirement on system bit timing. The effects of imperfect timing in direct-detection (noncoherent) optical binary systems are investigated using both pulse-position modulation and on-off keying for bit transmission. Particular emphasis is placed on specification of timing accuracy and an examination of system degradation when this accuracy is not attained. Bit error probabilities are shown as a function of timing errors from which average error probabilities can be computed for specific synchronization methods. Of significance is the presence of a residual or irreducible error probability in both systems, due entirely to the timing system, which cannot be overcome by the data channel.

Theoretical and experimental comparison of an ultra-high-speed laser data transmission system

The performance of a digital optical data transmission system is specified by the probability that the system erroneously decides a signal has or has not been transmitted. Two factors which induce signal fading and thereby decrease system performance are atmospheric scintillation and transmitter pointing inaccuracy. A channel simulator was developed that is capable of producing the effects of both atmospheric scintillation and the transmitter pointing problem for a neodymium-yag optical data transmission systems. Comparison of data taken from the modulated intensity of a beam having been transmitted through the channel simulator with experimental data from GEOS-B argon laser transmission through the atmosphere to a low earth-orbiting satellite indicates that the modulated signal intensity is log-normal to the degree of measured atmospheric scintillation.

Phase matching in second-harmonic generation using artificial periodic structures.

The use of artificial periodic structures, consisting of spatial modulations of the linear and nonlinear susceptibilities of a nonlinear optical medium, to achieve phase matching in second-harmonic generation is analyzed. Dispersion relations and approximate formulas for the second-harmonic fields generated under various conditions are obtained and used to evaluate the experimental situation.

Dually-mode-locked ND: YAG laser

Mode-locking is stabilized effectively by conventional loss-modulator and phase-modulator, mode-locking elements placed in laser cavity in optical series with one another. Resulting dually-mode-locked system provides pulses with constant phase relative to mode-lock drive signal without presence of relaxation oscillation noise.

CO2 laser communication systems for near-earth space applications

Projections of the growth of earth-sensing systems for the latter half of the 1980's show a data-transmission requirement of 300 Mbit/s and above. The most efficient technique to return the data from a sensing satellite to a ground station is through a geosynchronous data relay satellite. A laser system is most attractive for the space-to-space link. A five-year program was conducted which has shown the basic technical feasibility of accomplishing this link with a CO2 laser system operating at a wavelength near 10 microns. The system uses a mercury-cadmium-telluride infrared mixer cooled to approximately 100 K by a radiative cooler. The laser local oscillator and coupling-modulated laser transmitter use conductively cooled beryllium oxide construction. The optical antenna for transmission and reception has a gain of nominally 92 dB with a 3-dB beamwidth of 80 microrad. Tracking jitter is less than ten microrad, and signal acquisition occurs in less than 1 min. The receiver subsystem has a sensitivity of 10 to the -19th power W/Hz, accommodates a 300-Mbit/s data rate, and can track Doppler frequency variations over a + or - 700-MHz range.

Positions of three X-ray burst sources

Precise (20-30 arcsec) positions are reported for three steady X-ray sources that have been identified recently as X-ray burst sources: 4U (MXB) 1636-53, 4U 1728-33 (MXB 1728-34), and 4U (MXB) 1735-44. The positions were derived from data obtained with the SAS 3 rotating modulation collimators during a survey of the galactic plane. Possible optical counterparts are noted.

Radiance profile enhancement for solar occultation measurements

It is pointed out that distortions in received signals in solar occultation measurements made from space derive from the systematic motion of the electrooptical sensor. In a wide range of cases, the motion-related signal distortions brought about by the instrument's full modulation transfer function are as important as those from the optics. It is shown through simulation that existing techniques in the field of digital-image processing can be applied directly to solar occultation experiments to correct for these distortions. The resulting enhanced radiation profile is found to be much closer to the true radiance profile than is the sampled output of the instrument.

Solar energy modulator

A module is described with a receiver having a solar energy acceptance opening and supported by a mounting ring along the optic axis of a parabolic mirror in coaxial alignment for receiving solar energy from the mirror, and a solar flux modulator plate for varying the quantity of solar energy flux received by the acceptance opening of the module. The modulator plate is characterized by an annular, plate-like body, the internal diameter of which is equal to or slightly greater than the diameter of the solar energy acceptance opening of the receiver. Slave cylinders are connected to the modulator plate for supporting the plate for axial displacement along the axis of the mirror, therby shading the opening with respect to solar energy flux reflected from the surface of the mirror to the solar energy acceptance opening.

Vector magnetic field observations with the Haleakala polarimeter

Several enhancements were recently made to the Haleakala polarimeter. Linear array detectors provide simultaneous resolution over a 3-A wavelength range, with spectral resolution of 40 mA. Optical fibers are now used to carry the intensity-modulated light from the rotating quarter-wave plate polarimeter to the echelle spectrometer, permitting its removal from the spar to a more stable environment. These changes, together with improved quarter-wave plates, reduced systematic errors to a few parts in 10,000 for routine observations. Examples of Stokes profiles and derived magnetic field maps are presented.

Solar dynamic power for the Space Station

This paper describes a computer code which provides a significant advance in the systems analysis capabilities of solar dynamic power modules. While the code can be used to advantage in the preliminary analysis of terrestrial solar dynamic modules its real value lies in the adaptions which make it particularly useful for the conceptualization of optimized power modules for space applications. In particular, as illustrated in the paper, the code can be used to establish optimum values of concentrator diameter, concentrator surface roughness, concentrator rim angle and receiver aperture corresponding to the main heat cycle options - Organic Rankine and Brayton - and for certain receiver design options. The code can also be used to establish system sizing margins to account for the loss of reflectivity in orbit or the seasonal variation of insolation. By the simulation of the interactions among the major components of a solar dynamic module and through simplified formulations of the major thermal-optic-thermodynamic interactions the code adds a powerful, efficient and economic analytical tool to the repertory of techniques available for the design of advanced space power systems.

Index grating lifetime in photorefractive GaAs

The index grating lifetime in liquid encapsulated Czochralski-grown undoped semi-insulating GaAs was measured using a beam coupling technique. The largest lifetime measure was about 8 s under a read beam intensity of 0.7 mW/sq cm with the grating periodicity being 0.63 microns. The measured value decreases to milliseconds as the read beam intensity and the grating periodicity increase to about 10 mW/sq cm and 4 microns, respectively. This range of grating lifetime in this material is adequate for its use in real-time spatial light modulators, reconfigurable beam steering devices, and dynamic memory elements, for optical computing. In addition, the results suggest that the lifetime is sensitive to residual imperfections in the crystal.

Experimental measurement and theoretical modeling of microwave scattering and the structure of the sea surface influencing radar observations from space

The electromagnetic bias is an error present in radar altimetry of the ocean due to the non-uniform reflection from wave troughs and crests. A study of the electromagnetic bias became necessary to permit error reduction in mean sea level measurements of satellite radar altimeters. Satellite radar altimeters have been used to find the upper and lower bounds for the electromagnetic bias. This report will present a theory using physical optics scattering and an empirical model of the short wave modulation to predict the electromagnetic bias. The predicted electromagnetic bias will be compared to measurements at C and Ku bands.
