Evaluating proxy influence in assimilated paleoclimate reconstructions – Testing the exchangeability of two ensembles of spatial processes
Climate field reconstructions (CFR) attempt to estimate spatiotemporal fields of climate variables in the past using climate proxies such as tree rings, ice cores, and corals. Data Assimilation (DA) methods are a recent and promising new means of deriving CFRs that optimally fuse climate proxies with climate model output. Despite the growing application of DA-based CFRs, little is understood about how much the assimilated proxies change the statistical properties of the climate model data. To address this question, we propose a robust and computationally efficient method, based on functional data depth, to evaluate differences in the distributions of two spatiotemporal processes. In this study, we apply our test to study global and regional proxy influence in DA-based CFRs by comparing the background and analysis states, which are treated as two samples of spatiotemporal fields. We find that the analysis states are significantly altered from the climate-model-based background states due to the assimilation of proxies. Moreover, the difference between the analysis and background states increases with the number of proxies, even in regions far beyond proxy collection sites. Our approach allows us to characterize the added value of proxies, indicating where and when the analysis states are distinct from the background states.

Inelastic, exchange, and reactive processes in rovibrationally excited collisions of HD with H
ABSTRACT The HD molecule is an important coolant in early universe chemistry models and a tracer of H2 in star-forming regions. Rate coefficients for collisional excitation and de-excitation of HD rotational and vibrational levels form important ingredients in astrophysical models. While collisions with He, H2, and H are the most important, available data for H + HD collisions are largely limited to temperatures less than 1000 K for the vibrational ground state, low-lying rotational levels of the v = 1 HD vibrational level, or computed without reactive contributions. Here, through explicit quantum scattering calculations, we report extensive data for rovibrational transitions in HD induced by H atoms for a range of rotational levels in v = 1 and some v = 0 levels for temperatures up to 1000 K. The significance of the computed results for astrophysical modeling is discussed.

Frequency shifts in the electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum of 39 K due to spin-exchange collisions with polarized 3 He and precise 3 He polarimetry
The Zeeman splittings and electron paramagnetic resonance frequencies of alkali-metal atoms are shifted in the presence of a polarized noble gas. For a spherical geometry, the shift is enhanced over what is expected classically by a dimensionless atomic parameter 𝜅 0 that is unique to each alkali-metal-atom–noble-gas pair. Here, we present a precise measurement of 𝜅 0 for the 39 K − 3 He system with a relative accuracy of better than 1%. A critical component of achieving subpercent accuracy involved characterizing the shape of our samples using both MRI and CT medical-imaging techniques. The parameter 𝜅 0 plays an important role in establishing the absolute polarization of 3 He in a variety of contexts, including polarized targets for electron-scattering experiments and MRI of the gas space of the lungs. Our measurement more than doubles the accuracy possible when using 𝜅 0 for polarimetry purposes. Just as important, the work presented here represents a direct measurement of 𝜅 0 for the 39 K − 3 He system; previous values for 𝜅 0 in the 39 K − 3 He system relied on a chain of measurements that were benchmarked by previous measurements of 𝜅 0 in the Rb- 3 He system.

Easy-plane anisotropic-exchange magnets on a honeycomb lattice: Quantum effects and dealing with them
We provide analytical and numerical insights into the phase diagram and other properties of the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice in the easy-plane limit, in which interactions are only between spin components that belong to the plane of magnetic ions. This parameter subspace allows for a much-needed systematic quantitative investigation of spin excitations in the ordered phases and of their generic features. Specifically, we demonstrate that in this limit one can consistently take into account magnon interactions in both zero-field zigzag and field-polarized phases. For the nominally polarized phase, we propose a regularization of the unphysical divergences that occur at the critical field and are plaguing the 1/S approximation in this class of models. For the explored parameter subspace, all symmetry-allowed terms of the standard parametrization of the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model, such as K, J, and Γ, are significant, making the offered consideration relevant to a much wider parameter space. Furthermore, the dynamical structure factor near the paramagnetic critical point illustrates this relevance by showing features that are reminiscent of the ones observed in α–RuCl 3 , underscoring that they are not unique and should be common to a wide range of parameters of the model and, by extension, to other materials.
