High surface area magnetic double perovskite La 2 AlFeO 6 as an efficient and stable photo-Fenton catalyst under a wide pH range

Photo-Fenton process is an efficient way to treat the organic pollutants in wastewater. However, the efficiency is limited by serious leaching of iron ion, separation of spent catalyst from reaction system for facile recycling, low (pH<4) reaction environment. Herein, we report a preparation of a novel magnetic double perovskite photocatalyst La2AlFeO6, and refractory organic pollutants like phenol, etc. were used as probes to test the efficiency of catalyst. The results showed that the catalytic material retained high surface area and high ratio of Fe 3+ on its surface, and the generated ·OH, ·O 2 - and 1 O 2 lead to a highly photocatalytic efficiency even at neutral pH condition. In addition, the as prepared double perovskite photocatalyst La 2 AlFeO 6 also exhibits excellent stable and magnetic properties. There is no iron ion leaching detected during the courses of the reaction. Furthermore, the spent catalyst can be separated by magnetic field easily, and thus can be reused after simple air drying without any further treatment or calcination.

Helium tribology of Inconel 617 subjected to laser peening for high temperature nuclear reactor applications

Inconel 617 is among the best candidates for utilization in high temperature gas cooled reactor tribo-components. However, the combined effects of sliding contact, along with intermittent idle times and very high temperature material degradation, deteriorates the alloy tribological performance, especially under a helium atmosphere. Laser peening is a surface treatment technique which can enhance the properties at the surface and subsurface by generating deep residual stresses and enhanced microstructure. In this work, we report the tribological behavior of regular laser peened as well as thermally-engineered laser peened Inconel 617 under helium and air atmospheres at 800 °C. In addition to friction and wear studies, the specimens are characterized by different analytical techniques to further understand the mechanisms involved in the peening process and sliding contact. Regardless of the peening process and post-process treatment types, it is observed that laser peening improves the tribological characteristics of Inconel 617. Interestingly, laser peening followed by helium thermal aging shows highly enhanced tribological behavior. This is attributed to the strengthening effect of the laser peening on the surface oxides providing an excellent and lasting protective and lubricating film under helium exposure.

Super-porous Pt/CuO/Pt hybrid platform for ultra-sensitive and selective H 2 O 2 detection

A super-porous Pt/CuO/Pt hybrid electrode is demonstrated with extremely high sensing performance parameters for the hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) detection. A unique physiochemical approach is adapted for the fabrication of 3-D super-porous Pt/CuO/Pt sensing platform. Here, the super-porous Pt/CuO/Pt hybrid platform demonstrates a superior sensitivity of 16,694 µA mM -1 cm -2 with a limit of detection of 2.91 nM (S/N = 3). It also demonstrates an excellent selectivity against the interfering molecules such as NaCl, fructose, ascorbic acid, citric acid, dopamine and glucose with a wide linear range. The demonstrated performance ranks the Pt/CuO/Pt hybrid platform as one of the best H 2 O 2 sensors as summarized in the Table 2. The super-porous CuO layer is fabricated by a dynamic hydrogen bubbling technique of electrochemical deposition and metallic Pt NP decoration is achieved by the physical vapor deposition (PVD) and post-annealing. The super-porous CuO layer offers a drastically improved electrochemical active surface area, and the Pt NP decoration offers a significantly improved conductivity and improved charge accumulation for the H 2 O 2 reduction. The DFT simulations confirm the predominance of CuO over Cu 2 O and Pt over Pd for the H 2 O 2 detection based on the adsorption energy, density of states and charge accumulation calculations.

Tailoring activity of iron phthalocyanine by edge-nitrogen sites induced electronic delocalization

Fe-N-C catalysts have been recognized as the most satisfactory candidates alternatively to Pt-based catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, fine-tailoring of their intrinsic ORR catalytic activity still remains a great challenge due to the inferior accessibility and intrinsic activity of FeN x moieties. Herein, one order of magnitude activity enhancement of pristine Fe-N-C through cooperating with nitrogen-doped carbon micro-flower is achieved. The axial coordination effect between Fe active center and nitrogen atoms in support can break the electronic distribution symmetry of FeN x moieties and induce the electron delocalization on Fe active center and the electron localization on N, respectively, which favor the adsorption behavior of *OH intermediate. As a result, the catalyst exhibits a remarkable half-wave potential of 0.9 V and a high kinetic current density of 74.04 mA cm -2 at 0.85 V. In addition, when utilized as a cathode catalyst of liquid Zn-air batteries (ZABs), it possesses excellent electrochemical performance, for example, a high open circuit voltage (OCV) and peak power density of 1.59 V and 170.09 mW cm -2 , respectively. In conclusion, this work provides a new understanding into the activity enhancement mechanism of Fe-N-C catalysts, and inspires electronic delocalization of active sites for adjusting catalytic activity.

Enhancing mobility and interface state engineering via UV-ozone treatment in BEOL-compatible ultrathin TiO 2 transistors

It has emerged as a potential candidate to improve the performance of monolithic-three-dimensional (M3D) integration of fused logic and memories through low-temperature in situ synthesis of high-performance metal–oxide–semiconductor (MOS) transistors. Here, we report the demonstration of the BEOL-compatible low thermal budget (350 °C) fabrication process of ultrathin-TiO2 transistors by the combination of RTA and UV-ozone treatment (RTA-UVOz). UV–ozone (UVOz) treatment of TiO2 anatase films significantly enhances stability, boosting ION current and field effect mobility (μ FE ) by two times of magnitude in TiO2 TFTs. UV ozone treatment helps to eliminate pre-existing oxygen vacancies and carbon contamination on TiO2 channels even at low temperature (100 °C), resulting in high-quality channel/dielectric interfaces with low interface states (D it ). During UVOz treatment, oxygen species (O x ) passivate the oxygen vacancies ($V$$^{2+}_{o}$), and hence low concentration of $V$$^{2+}_{o}$ would be left for ionization/de-ionization under PBS/NBS, leading to improved bias stress stability. Furthermore, the TiO 2 TFTs with thin ZrO 2 gate dielectric exhibited excellent performance including a lower subthreshold swing (SS) of 98 mV/dec with high drive I ON current ∼ 4.5 μA/μm, a high I ON /I OFF > 10 9 , and mobility μFE of 7 cm 2 /V-s under a battery powered voltage of 1 V. UV–ozone treatment enables high-performance, CMOS-compatible TiO 2 transistors with a low thermal budget, ideal for next-generation flexible, energy-efficient electronics.

Sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array to spectral signatures of hadronic PeVatrons with application to Galactic Supernova Remnants

The local Cosmic Ray (CR) energy spectrum exhibits a spectral softening at energies around 3 PeV. Sources which are capable of accelerating hadrons to such energies are called hadronic PeVatrons. However, hadronic PeVatrons have not yet been firmly identified within the Galaxy. Several source classes, including Galactic Supernova Remnants (SNRs), have been proposed as PeVatron candidates. The potential to search for hadronic PeVatrons with the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is assessed. The focus is on the usage of very high energy γ-ray spectral signatures for the identification of PeVatrons. Assuming that SNRs can accelerate CRs up to knee energies, the number of Galactic SNRs which can be identified as PeVatrons with CTA is estimated within a model for the evolution of SNRs. Additionally, the potential of a follow-up observation strategy under moonlight conditions for PeVatron searches is investigated. Statistical methods for the identification of PeVatrons are introduced, and realistic Monte-Carlo simulations of the response of the CTA observatory to the emission spectra from hadronic PeVatrons are performed. Based on simulations of a simplified model for the evolution for SNRs, the detection of a γ-ray signal from in average 9 Galactic PeVatron SNRs is expected to result from the scan of the Galactic plane with CTA after 10 h of exposure. Finally, CTA is also shown to have excellent potential to confirm these sources as PeVatrons in deep observations with $\mathscr{O}$ (100) hours of exposure per source.

Microwave radiometer, sun-photometer and GNSS multi-comparison of integrated water vapor in Southwestern Europe

This work presents a comparison of integrated water vapor (IWV) data recorded from microwave radiometer (MWR) and sun-photometer (SP) using global navigation satellite system (GNSS) IWV as reference in five mid-latitude sites of Portugal and Spain (2003–2021). A very high correlation is obtained for both instruments (R2 between 0.94 and 0.98), although, while MWR shows a wet bias, SP exhibits a dry one. In addition, a dependence of mean bias error (MBE) and standard deviation (SD) on IWV has been observed, increasing (larger discrepancies) both indices as IWV increases. The solar zenith angle (SZA) dependence is also studied, finding slightly larger discrepancies for the MWR than for SP in comparison with GNSS for very high values of SZA. Finally, a marked seasonal dependence is observed for SP-GNSS differences, modulated by the IWV dependence explained above. In contrast, the seasonal dependence for MWR is quite weaker than it is for SP. Therefore, in spite of the excellent agreement found among the different instruments, it is recommended that: i) the dependence with IWV be studied and corrected to further increase the performance of the instruments, and ii) metadata be used to filter out situations in which the instrument cannot operate properly.

Effect of digestate and digestate supplemented with biochar on switchgrass growth and chemical composition

Digestate, a by-product of anaerobic digestion, can be an excellent source of nutrients for bioenergy crop production, while biochar, resulting from pyrolyzing biomass, can valorize the nutrients of digestate. The objective of this study was to evaluate the nutritional value of digestate and digestate + biochar for switchgrass production. The greenhouse experiment was conducted to determine the effects of a nitrogen (N) source including 0 N (control), urea (nutrient control), sewage sludge digestate, and sewage sludge digestate + corn stover biochar on switchgrass growth and feedstock composition. Nitrogen sources were observed to significantly increase plant weight at the 32-week harvest, with weight ranging from 94.2 to 125.2 g plant -1 , depending on the N source, compared to 70.7 g plant -1 from the negative control. Moreover, switchgrass treated with digestate + biochar showed higher plant weight than samples treated only with digestate. Nitrogen application of urea, digestate, and digestate + biochar had positive effects on plant height and total leaf area in the 32-week harvests and chlorophyll content in the 8-week harvests. Feedstock quality traits including hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin content were not affected by N sources in either the 8 or 32-week harvests with the exception of ash concentration in the 32-week harvests. Our results indicate that digestate and digestate + biochar can be a potential substitute for chemical fertilizer, resulting in increased biomass yield.

Utilization of guaiacol-based deep eutectic solvent for achieving a sustainable biorefinery

This study proposed a renewable deep eutectic solvent (DES) pretreatment using lignin-derived guaiacol as the hydrogen bond donor. The DES showed excellent biomass fractionation efficiency after the incorporation of trace AlCl 3 as the reinforcer, which removed 79.1 % lignin while preserving more than 90 % glucan. The pretreated bamboo exhibited 96.2 % glucan enzymatic hydrolysis yield at only 110 °C. The physicochemical properties of the pretreated solids were comprehensively investigated to explain how the DES fractionation overcame the biomass recalcitrance. The regenerated lignin from the DES pretreatment was also analyzed, which revealed that lignin β-O-4 bond was significantly cleaved. In conclusion, this guaiacol-based DES could greatly contribute to establish a closed-loop biorefinery sequence with high lignin fractionation efficiency and great solvent recyclability.

A method and tool to determine the colorimetric and photobiological properties of light transmitted through glass and other optical materials

Here we describe a framework and provides a computational tool to characterize the color quality and biological potential of light that is transmitted through glass and other optical materials. The IES TM-30 framework and Excel computation tool were adapted to evaluate color quality, with measures from CIE S 026, UL 24480, and the WELL Building Standard v2 added to evaluate biological potential. The user selects a pre-transmittance spectral power distribution (SPD), such as for a CIE D-Series Illuminant, Planckian radiation, electric lamp, or measurement of daylight at a building site. The tool allows a user to populate a database with spectral data for glazing or other optical materials, comprising spectral transmission and the spectral reflectance of both sides. The user creates a unit with one, two, or three panes of glazing or other optical materials, and the tool calculates the composite spectral transmittance accounting for reflections between materials. The tool computes the transmitted SPD, then determines colorimetric and photobiological outputs using the transmitted SPD as the test source. Glass, window, and skylight manufacturers can employ the tool to optimize glazing spectral transmission to achieve intentional colorimetric and photobiological performance with transmitted light. Electric lighting manufacturers, designers, and researchers can use the tool to evaluate the impact of glazing units and other optical materials on the color quality and biological potential of transmitted light.

Thermodynamics of monoclinic and tetragonal hafnium dioxide (HfO 2 ) at ambient pressure

Accurate and precise thermodynamic models of oxide compounds and their phases are important for calculating the phase stability of oxide materials. We develop and use a coupled quantum mechanical and molecular dynamics approach to create thermodynamic models of hafnia (HfO2) polymorphs from 0 K to 3000 K at ambient pressure. The approach is based on the quasi-harmonic approximation below the Debye temperature and on ab-initio molecular dynamics calculations above the Debye temperature to predict constant pressure heat capacities (C-p). A Bayesian model provides interpolated values between these regimes. As a case study, we develop thermodynamic models of monoclinic and tetragonal HfO2 polymorphs. The predicted heat capacities are in excellent agreement with experiment, and the predicted temperature of the monoclinic to tetragonal phase transition (2173 K) is in good agreement with the experimental value (2078K). These results provide a comprehensive and accurate thermodynamic model of the monoclinic and tetragonal phases of hafnia on a broad range of temperatures and can serve as input to CALPHAD assessment of multi-component hafnia-based phase diagrams.

Fast multiscale contrast independent preconditioners for linear elastic topology optimization problems

The goal of this work is to present a fast and viable approach for the numerical solution of the high-contrast state problems arising in topology optimization. The optimization process is iterative, and the gradients are obtained by an adjoint analysis, which requires the numerical solution of large high-contrast linear elastic problems with features spanning several length scales. The size of the discretized problems forces the utilization of iterative linear solvers with solution time dependent on the quality of the preconditioner. The lack of clear separation between the scales, as well as the high-contrast, imposes severe challenges on the standard preconditioning techniques. Thus, here we propose new methods for the high-contrast elasticity equation with performance independent of the high-contrast and the multi-scale structure of the elasticity problem. The solvers are based on two-levels domain decomposition techniques with a carefully constructed coarse level to deal with the high-contrast and multi-scale nature of the problem. The construction utilizes spectral equivalence between scalar diffusion and each displacement block of the elasticity problems and, in contrast to previous solutions proposed in the literature, is able to select the appropriate dimension of the coarse space automatically. The new methods inherit the advantages of domain decomposition techniques, such as easy parallelization and scalability. Finally, the presented numerical experiments demonstrate the excellent performance of the proposed methods.

Effect of constitutive law on the erythrocyte membrane response to large strains

Three constitutive laws, that is the Skalak, neo-Hookean and Yeoh laws, commonly employed for describing the erythrocyte membrane mechanics are theoretically analyzed and numerically investigated to assess their accuracy for capturing erythrocyte deformation characteristics and morphology. In this work, particular emphasis is given to the nonlinear deformation regime, where it is known that the discrepancies between constitutive laws are most prominent. Hence, the experiments of optical tweezers and micropipette aspiration are considered here, for which relationships between the individual shear elastic moduli of the constitutive laws can also be established through analysis of the tension-deformation relationship. All constitutive laws were found to adequately predict the axial and transverse deformations of a red blood cell subjected to stretching with optical tweezers for a constant shear elastic modulus value. As opposed to Skalak law, the neo-Hookean and Yeoh laws replicated the erythrocyte membrane folding, that has been experimentally observed, with the trade-off of sustaining significant area variations. For the micropipette aspiration, the suction pressure-aspiration length relationship could be excellently predicted for a fixed shear elastic modulus value only when Yeoh law was considered. Importantly, the neo-Hookean and Yeoh laws reproduced the membrane wrinkling at suction pressures close to those experimentally measured. None of the constitutive laws suffered from membrane area compressibility in the micropipette aspiration case.

Electronic structure of p -type transparent conducting oxide CuAlO 2

We report copper-based delafossite oxides are excellent candidates for the p-type transparent conducting oxide (TCO), which is essential in realizing transparent semiconductor applications. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we report the low-energy electronic structure of CuAlO 2 . We found that the band structure near the valence band top is characterized by hole bands with their maxima along the Brillouin zone boundary. Furthermore, the effective masses along the Γ–M and Γ–K directions were found to be (0.6 ± 0.1) m0 and (0.9 ± 0.1) m 0 , respectively, which impose an important benchmark against the existing band calculations.

Nitrogen-doped graphene-wrapped Cu 2 S as a superior anode in sodium-ion batteries

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have been attracting an ever-growing research interest, mainly ascribed to their cost-effectiveness. However, SIBs have been significantly hindered by lack of a suitable anode. Herein, an exceptional Cu 2 S-based composite anode is developed via a facile ball-milling method, in which Cu 2 S particles are wrapped by nitrogen-doped graphene sheets (Cu 2 S@NG). This Cu 2 S@NG composite anode enables extremely long cycling life, ultra-stable cyclability with high capacity, and excellent rate capability. The superior performance of the Cu 2 S@NG composite is owing to its intriguing core-shell structure and the exceptional properties of both the Cu 2 S and NG. In this study, it is found that the NG shell yields multiple merits in improving the performance of Cu 2 S: (i) mitigating the loss of active materials, (ii) constituting a stable interface, (iii) providing improved electrical conductivity and good ionic transfer, and (iv) enhancing mechanical integrity. Additionally, the vital effects of different voltage windows and a surface coating via atomic layer deposition on further enhancing performance are clarified. Significantly, the electrochemical mechanism of Cu 2 S during sodiation/desodiation is unveiled using advanced synchrotron-based in-situ X-ray diffraction and X-ray adsorption spectroscopy. This work represents a great advance in seeking high-performance anodes in SIBs.

Converting plastic waste pyrolysis ash into flash graphene

Pyrolysis of plastic waste (PW), a commercial method of recycling, is currently economically challenging and produces up to 20% by mass valueless pyrolysis ash (PA) as a byproduct. Here, direct, facile upcycling of PW-derived PA into high purity turbostratic flash graphene (tFG) is demonstrated. The tFG displays excellent dispersibility, yielding a concentration of 2.84 mg/mL in aqueous surfactant solution. The tFG was used to fabricate tFG-PVA nanocomposites, and low doses of tFG (0.1%–1%) improve failure strain by 15%–30% when compared to the samples of neat PVA. Furthermore, the addition of tFG to PVA films showed decreased hydrophilic interactions, increasing the water contact angle by 235% and adsorbing 500% less water than neat PVA. The tFG was also added to Portland cement paste as well as concrete, and exhibited 43% and 25% increases in compressive strength, respectively. The tFG is used directly in both composite applications, requiring no purification or chemical functionalization, unlike many other products used in nanocomposites.

A deep learning interatomic potential developed for atomistic simulation of carbon materials

Interatomic potentials based on neural-network machine learning method have attracted considerable attention in recent years owing to their outstanding ability to balance the accuracy and efficiency in atomistic simulations. In this work, a neural-network potential (NNP) for carbon is generated to simulate the structural properties of various carbon structures. The potential is trained using a database consisting of crystalline and liquid structures obtained by the first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The developed potential accurately predicts the energies and forces in crystalline and liquid carbon structures, the energetic stability of defected graphene, and the structures of amorphous carbon as the function of density. As a result, the excellent accuracy and transferability of the NNP provide a promising tool for accurate atomistic simulations of various carbon materials with faster speed and much lower cost.

Origin of the background absorption in carbon nanotubes: Phonon-assisted excitonic continuum

Excitonic effects in 1D semiconductors can be qualitatively different from those in higher dimensions. In particular, the Sommerfeld factor, the ratio of the above-band-edge excitonic continuum absorption to free electron-hole pair generation, has been shown to be less than 1 (suppressed) in 1D systems while it is larger than 1 (enhanced) in 2D and 3D systems. Strong continuum suppression indeed exists in semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes, a prototypical 1D semiconductor. However, absorption spectra for carbon nanotubes are typically fit with a combination of Lorentzians and a polynomial background baseline with little physical meaning. We performed absorption measurements in aligned single-chirality (6,5) carbon nanotube films. The obtained spectra were fit with our theoretical model obtained by solving the Boltzmann scattering equation involving fifty-nine different types of transitions among three different types of quasiparticles. Specifically, we took into account microscopic interactions between photons, phonons, and excitons, including their dispersions, which unambiguously demonstrated that the background absorption is due to phonon-assisted transitions from the semiconductor vacuum to finite-momentum continuum states of excitons. The excellent agreement we obtained between experiment and theory suggests that our numerical technique can be seamlessly extended to compute strongly out-of-equilibrium many-body dynamics and time-resolved spectra in low-dimensional materials.
