Polarographic carbon dioxide transducer amplifier

Electronic amplifier contains matched pair of metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor devices which have high input impedance and long-term stability. Thermistor in feedback loop provides temperature compensation for large drifts in the sensor.

Investigations to improve carbon dioxide control with amine and molecular sieve type sorbers

The optimization trends and operating parameters of an integral molecular sieve bed heat exchanger were investigated. The optimum combination of substrate and coating for the HS-B porous polymer was determined based on the CO2 dynamic capacity in the presence of water vapor. Full size HS-B canister performance was evaluated. An Amine CO2 Concentrator utilizing IR-45 sorber material and available Manned Orbiting Laboratory hardware was designed, fabricated and tested for use as an experiment in the NASA 90-day space simulator test of 1970. It supported four men in the simulator for 71 days out of the 90-day test duration.

The synthesis of starch from carbon dioxide using isolubilized stabilized enzymes

Systems for artificial manufacture of starch and for delineation of technological areas, and the rationale for studying them are considered. A discussion of the enzyme-catalyzed routes of synthesis available and a choice as to the most promising route are presented. A discussion of the enzymes involved, of enzyme insolubilization technology, and of possible engineering approaches, with examples in the form of model calculations for both reactors and separators, are also presented.

Regenerable thermal control and carbon dioxide control techniques for use in advanced extravehicular protective systems

The most promising closed CO2 control concept identified by this study is the solid pellet, Mg(OH2)2 system. Two promising approaches to closed thermal control were identified. The AHS system uses modular fusible heat sinks, with a contingency evaporative mode, to allow maximum EVA mobility. The AHS/refrigerator top-off subsystem requires an umbilical to minimize expendables, but less EVA time is used to operate the system, since there is no requirement to change modules. Both of these subsystems are thought to be practical solutions to the problem of providing closed heat rejection for an EVA system.

In-pile and out-of-pile testing of a molybdenum-uranium dioxide cermet fueled themionic diode

The behavior of Mo-UO2 cermet fuel in a diode for thermionic reactor application was studied. The diode had a Mo-0.5 Ti emitter and niobium collector. Output power ranged from 1.4 to 2.8 W/cm squared at emitter and collector temperatures of 1500 deg and 540 C. Thermionic performance was stable within the limits of the instrumentation sensitivity. Through 1000 hours of in-pile operation the emitter was dimensionally stable. However, some fission gases (15 percent) leaked through an inner clad imperfection that occurred during fuel fabrication.

Identification of carbon dioxide frost on the Martian polar caps.

Spectra of the Martian south polar cap produced by the techniques of Fourier spectroscopy show 11 narrow features attributed to the composition of the polar cap. Through comparison with laboratory spectra, all 11 have been identified as solid CO2 absorptions.

Theoretical analysis of swelling characteristics of cylindrical uranium dioxide fuel pins with a niobium - 1-percent-zirconium clad

The relations between clad creep strain and fuel volume swelling are shown for cylindrical UO2 fuel pins with a Nb-1Zr clad. These relations were obtained by using the computer code CYGRO-2. These clad-strain - fuel-volume-swelling relations may be used with any fuel-volume-swelling model, provided the fuel volume swelling is isotropic and independent of the clad restraints. The effects of clad temperature (over a range from 118 to 1642 K (2010 to 2960 R)), pin diameter, clad thickness and central hole size in the fuel have been investigated. In all calculations the irradiation time was 500 hours. The burnup rate was varied.

The problems of growth of single crystals of rhenium and iridium dioxides

Research is reported on the following: (1) growth of IrO2 and ReOx by the vapor phase method, in which a measured flow of oxygen gas carries the vapor products of the pure metals from a hot zone to a cold zone in a two temperature zone furnace; and (2) growth of IrO2 and Re2O7 single crystals by the chemical vapor transport method.
