Statistical performance of the intensified charged coupled device

The first analysis of the statistical performance of the intensified charge coupled device (CCD) is presented. The Poisson statistics of the arriving photons, the exponential pulse height distribution of the microchannel plate in the image intensifier, and the effects of discrete digitization of the charge in reading the CCD are included. A range of intensifier gains from the high levels that permit pulse counting to the low levels that can be used with the accumulation of charge on the CCD is considered. As a tool for this analysis, an analytical model of the performance of the detector system that is generally useful for predicting many aspects of system performance under a wide range of conditions is developed. The statistical penalty for operating the intensified CCD in the charge accumulation mode is not severe, and in some applications it may be desirable to accept this penalty to gain the advantages of increased dynamic range through charge accumulation. This investigation has revealed no pathological aspects of the operation of the detector system.

Hopf bifurcation with dihedral group symmetry - Coupled nonlinear oscillators

The theory of Hopf bifurcation with symmetry developed by Golubitsky and Stewart (1985) is applied to systems of ODEs having the symmetries of a regular polygon, that is, whose symmetry group is dihedral. The existence and stability of symmetry-breaking branches of periodic solutions are considered. In particular, these results are applied to a general system of n nonlinear oscillators coupled symmetrically in a ring, and the generic oscillation patterns are described. It is found that the symmetry can force some oscillators to have twice the frequency of others. The case of four oscillators has exceptional features.

Collisionless coupling in the AMPTE artificial comet

Analysis of previously reported observations of the solar wind-barium interaction associated with the AMPTE artificial comet release of Dec. 27, 1984, is presented. On the basis of these results it is argued that solar wind couples momentum (and energy) to the barium ions through both laminar and turbulent processes. The laminar forces acting on the particles are the laminar electric and magnetic fields; the turbulent forces are associated with the intense electrostatic wave activity. This wave activity is shown to be caused by a cross-field solar wind proton-barium ion streaming instability. The observed wave frequencies and saturated amplitudes are consistent with the theoretical analysis.

Parallel solution of closely coupled systems

The odd-even permutation and associated unitary transformations for reordering the matrix coefficient A are employed as means of breaking the strong seriality which is characteristic of closely coupled systems. The nested dissection technique is also reviewed, and the equivalence between reordering A and dissecting its network is established. The effect of transforming A with odd-even permutation on its topology and the topology of its Cholesky factors is discussed. This leads to the construction of directed graphs showing the computational steps required for factoring A, their precedence relationships and their sequential and concurrent assignment to the available processors. Expressions for the speed-up and efficiency of using N processors in parallel relative to the sequential use of a single processor are derived from the directed graph. Similar expressions are also derived when the number of available processors is fewer than required.

Coupled flow, thermal and structural analysis of aerodynamically heated panels

A finite element approach for coupling flow, thermal and structural analyses of aerodynamically heated panels is presented. The Navier-Stokes equations for laminar compressible flow are solved together with the energy equation and quasi-static structural equations of the panel. Interactions between the flow, panel heat transfer and deformations are studied for thin stainless steel panels aerodynamically heated by Mach 6.6 flow.

Optimization procedure to control the coupling of vibration modes in flexible space structures

As spacecraft structural concepts increase in size and flexibility, the vibration frequencies become more closely-spaced. The identification and control of such closely-spaced frequencies present a significant challenge. To validate system identification and control methods prior to actual flight, simpler space structures will be flown. To challenge the above technologies it will be necessary to design these structures with closely-spaced or coupled vibration modes. Thus there exists a need to develop a systematic method to design a structure which has closely-spaced vibration frequencies. This paper describes an optimization procedure which is used to design a large flexible structure to have closely-spaced vibration frequencies. The procedure uses a general-purpose finite-element analysis program for the vibration and sensitivity analyses and a general-purpose optimization program. Results are presented from two studies. The first study uses a detailed model of a large flexible structure to design a structure with one pair of closely-spaced frequencies. The second study uses a simple equivalent beam model of a large flexible structure to obtain a design with two pairs of closely-spaced frequencies.

Analytical formulation of orbiter-payload models coupled by trunnion joints with Coulomb friction

An orbiter and its payload substructure are linked together by five trunnion joints which have thirty degrees-of-freedom. Geometric compatibility conditions require fourteen of the interface physical coordinates of the orbiter and payload to be equal to each other and the remaining sixteen are free to have relative motions under Coulomb friction. The component modes synthesis method using fourteen inertia relief attachment modes for the formulation of the coupled system is presented. The exact nonlinear friction function is derived based on the characteristics of the joints. Formulation is applicable to an orbiter that carries any number of payload substructures.

A coupled marching procedure for the partially parabolized Navier-Stokes equations

A coupled finite-difference formulation is described for solving a reduced form of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations by a multiple space marching procedure. The properties of the equations are discussed and the solution algorithm presented. The scheme is used to compute incompressible flows by taking the incompressible limit (M about 0.1) of the compressible formulation. A separate Poisson equation is not required for the pressure. Results are compared with experimental data and other numerical predictions for low Reynolds number channel inlet flow, flow over a rearward-facing step in a channel, and flow near the trailing edge of a flat plate.

The technique of linear prediction filters applied to studies of solar wind-magnetosphere coupling

Linear prediction filtering is a powerful empirical technique suitable for the study of stimulus-response behavior. The technique enables one to determine the most general linear relationship between multiple time-varying quantities, assuming that the physical systems relating the quantities are linear and time invariant. Several researchers have applied linear prediction analysis to investigate solar wind-magnetosphere interactions. This short review describes the method of linear prediction analysis, its application to solar wind-magnetosphere coupling studies both in terms of physical processes, and the results of investigations which have used this technique.

Solar wind-magnetosphere coupling and the distant magnetotail - ISEE-3 observations

ISEE-3 Geotail observations are used to investigate the relationship between the interplanetary magnetic field, substorm activity, and the distant magnetotail. Magnetic field and plasma observations are used to present evidence for the existence of a quasi-permanent, curved reconnection neutral line in the distant tail. The distance to the neutral line varies from absolute value of X = 120 to 140 R/sub e near the center of the tail to beyond absolute value of X = 200 R/sub e at the flanks. Downstream of the neutral line the plasma sheet magnetic field is shown to be negative and directly proportional to negative B/sub z in the solar wind as observed by IMP-8. V/sub x in the distant plasma sheet is also found to be proportional to IMF B/sub z with southward IMF producing the highest anti-solar flow velocities. A global dayside reconnection efficiency of 20 + or - 5 percent is derived from the ISEE-3/IMP-8 magnetic field comparisons. Substorm activity, as measured by the AL index, produces enhanced negative B/sub z and tailward V/sub x in the distant plasma sheet in agreement with the basic predictions of the reconnection-based models of substorms. The rate of magnetic flux transfer out of the tail as a function of AL is found to be consistent with previous near-earth studies. Similarly, the mass and energy fluxes carried by plasma sheet flow down the tail are consistent with theoretical mass and energy budgets for an open magnetosphere. In summary, the ISEE-3 Geotail observations appear to provide good support for reconnection models of solar wind-magnetosphere coupling and substorm energy rates.

An analysis of electromagnetic coupling and eigenfrequencies for microwave electrothermal thruster discharges

This paper discusses the basic approach to developing a comprehensive electromagnetic model for a microwave electrothermal discharge. The discharge and surrounding region are modeled as a section of waveguide loaded with a uniform, cold, lossy plasma. A characteristic equation has been derived describing all possible system modes. In particular the TM(01) mode is numerically solved. Propagation and attenuation constants for the TM(01) mode are found numerically for a given range of electron-neutral collision frequencies and plasma densities. Results are used to interpret a number of experimental observations in helium. Specifically, they are used to explain high coupling efficiencies and ease of cavity tuning at high pressures.

On the effect of the Fe(2+)/Fe(3+) redox couple on oxidation of carbon in hot H3PO4

Oxidation studies of graphite:glassy carbon composites have been carried out at 1 and 4.7 atm. pressures in conc. H3PO4 in the presence and absence of iron ions. The concentration of the acid was varied over 85-100 wt pct, and of the iron ions over 30-300 ppm; the temperature varied over 190-210 C. Unlike the effect of Fe, which has been observed to increase the corrosion of carbon in sulphuric acid, the corrosion in phosphoric acid was observed to be slightly decreased or not at all affected. This result arises because of the catalytic reduction of the oxidized surface groups of carbon by Fe(2+) ions. The catalytic reduction is possible because under the experimental conditions the redox potential of the Fe(2+)/Fe(3+) couple is lower than the open-circuit voltage of carbon.

Electron attachment in F2 - Conclusive demonstration of nonresonant, s-wave coupling in the limit of zero electron energy

Dissociative electron attachment to F2 has been observed in the energy range 0-140 meV, at a resolution of 6 meV (full width at half maximum). Results show conclusively a sharp, resolution-limited threshold behavior consistent with an s-wave cross section varying as sq rt of epsilon. Two accurate theoretical calculations predict only p-wave behavior varying as the sq rt of epsilon. Several nonadiabatic coupling effects leading to s-wave behavior are outlined.

Enhanced beam coupling modulation using the polarization properties of photorefractive GaAs

Observation is reported of a rotation in the polarization of the two photorefractive recording beams in GaAs for a configuration with the internally generated space-charge field along the line 110 crystallographic orientation. This rotation is a result of simultaneous constructive and destructive beam coupling in each beam for the optical electric field components along the two electrooptically induced principal dielectric axes of the crystal. By turning one of the beams on and off, the intensity of the other beam after the crystal and a polarization analyzer can be modulated by as much as 500 percent. This result is of particular importance for optical information processing applications.

Scientific charge-coupled devices

The charge-coupled device dominates an ever-increasing variety of scientific imaging and spectroscopy applications. Recent experience indicates, however, that the full potential of CCD performance lies well beyond that realized in devices currently available.Test data suggest that major improvements are feasible in spectral response, charge collection, charge transfer, and readout noise. These properties, their measurement in existing CCDs, and their potential for future improvement are discussed in this paper.

Computer simulation of two electrophoretic columns coupled for isoelectric focusing in simple buffers

Computer simulation is used to analyze a system of two electrophoretic columns coupled by mixing the anolyte of one with the catholyte of the other. A mathematical model is presented which is used to predict the pH gradients formed by monovalent buffers in this system, when the currents in the columns are unequal. In the column with the higher current a pH gradient is created which increases from anode to cathode and is potentially useful for isoelectric focusing. The breadth of this gradient is dependent upon the ratio of the currents. The function of the second column is the compensation of buffer migration which occurs in the first column, thereby maintaining constant electrolyte composition. The effects of buffer pKs and mobilities are evaluated.

The effects of wind-wave coupling on scatterometer wind measurement accuracy

The recent study of the effects of large-scale waves on scatterometer wind-measurement accuracy provides evidence of the important role played by the degree of wind-wave coupling. This degree is quantified by means of a generalized wind fetch introduced by definition. As a result, the fetch-induced bias in the SASS wind speeds is found to be as high as 2 m/s per 100 km of the fetch. An explanation of the bias is suggested based on the consideration of an additional component of surface scattering caused by EM wave diffraction at the crests of individual, sufficiently steep wavelets.
