Generalized Analytical Estimation of Sensitivity Matrices in Unbalanced Distribution Networks

Fast and accurate estimation of sensitivity matrices is significant for the enhancement of distribution system modeling and automation. Analytical estimations have mainly focused on voltage magnitude sensitivity to active/reactive power injections for unbalanced networks with Wye-connected loads and neglecting DERs' smart inverter functionality. Hence, this paper enhances the scope of analytical estimation of sensitivity matrices for unbalanced networks with 1- Φ, 2- Φ, and 3- Φ Delta/Wye-connected loads, DERs with smart inverter functionality, and substation/line step-voltage regulators (SVR). A composite bus model comprising of DER, Delta- and Wye-connected load is proposed to represent a generic distribution bus, which can be simplified to load, PV, or voltage-controlled bus as required. Furthermore, the proposed matrix-based analytical method consolidates voltage magnitude and angle sensitivity to active/reactive power injection and tap-position of all SVRs into a single algorithm. Extensive case studies on IEEE and EPRI networks show the accuracy and wide scope of the proposed algorithm compared to the existing benchmark method.

Environmental Validation of Materials and Design Concepts to Enable Operational Flexibility of Existing Coal Power Plants

Increasingly, coal-fired power plants are required to balance power grids by compensating for the variable electricity supply from renewable energy sources. Fossil-fueled power plants, originally designed to be base loaded, will increasingly need to operate on a load following or cyclic basis. This demanding requirement for operational flexibility will need to be evaluated for resilience to frequent start-ups, meeting major and rapid load changes, and providing frequency control duties. Our research objective was to evaluate and improve flexibility of existing power plants by improving and redesigning components and defining new operational strategies, with acceptable impacts on component life, efficiency and emissions.

Cellulose molecular weight of corn stover with cotreatment

Here we present a dataset of cellulose molecular weights from corn stover after a cotreatment process. The corn stover sample was subjected to a combination of mechanical disruption (ball milling) and consolidated bioprocessing (CBP) process using the bacterium C. thermocellum at 60 grams/L solids loadings. Cellulose was isolated from control, no cotreatment control, and cotreatment corn stover. Cellulose was then derivatized using anhydrous pyridine and phenyl isocyanate over 48 h at 70 ºC. The reaction was quenched by anhydrous methanol. Methanol and water mixture (7:3, v/v) was added dropwise to promote precipitation of the cellulose derivative. The solids were collected by filtration and thoroughly washed with the methanol and water mixture followed by water. The cellulose derivative was dried overnight under vacuum at 40°C. The obtained cellulose tricarbanilates was then dissolved in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at 1.0 mg/mL and the solution was filtered through a 0.45 µm PTFE filter and placed in an auto-sampler vial. The molecular weight of cellulose was measured by Agilent GPC SECurity 1200 system equipped with four Waters Styragel columns (i.e., HR0.5, HR2, HR4, and HR6) and a UV detector (270 nm). THF was used as the mobile phase. Data collection and processing was performed by Polymer Standards Service WinGPC Unity software (Build 6807). The molecular weight was calculated relative to the polystyrene calibration curve. The data on molecular weights provided information about the effects of cotreatment on corn stover cellulose molecular changes.

Impact of Selenium and Vitamin E Deficiency on Zika Virus Pathogenesis and Immune Response in Mice

Micronutrient status is recognized to influence host susceptibility to viral infections, yet its impact on Zika virus (ZIKV) pathogenesis remains incompletely understood. We investigated the effects of dietary selenium and combined selenium plus vitamin E deficiency on ZIKV infection outcomes in a type I interferon α/β receptor knockout (Ifnar1 −/− ) murine model. Mice maintained on deficient diets exhibited significantly lower neutralizing antibody titers and reduced levels of key antiviral cytokines (IFN-γ, TNF-α, IFN-α, IFN-β, IL-12p70, CCL5) compared to controls. Correspondingly, higher viral RNA loads were detected in the brains of double-deficient mice, which also experienced greater weight loss and increased mortality. Deep sequencing revealed no major differences in overall viral genome diversity across diet groups; however, specific mutations, including V330L and D67E in the E gene, and V360I in the NS3 gene, were enriched or detected in nutritionally deficient animals. These findings suggest that antioxidant micronutrient deficiency impairs both humoral and cellular immune responses to ZIKV, potentially facilitating enhanced neuroinvasion. While the functional consequences of the identified mutations warrant further investigation, our results underscore the importance of adequate micronutrient intake for optimal antiviral defense. Further studies are needed to clarify the epidemiological significance of these observations.

Developing Fuel Cell Electric Powertrain Architectures for Commercial Vehicles

Here, this article addresses the architecture development for a commercial vehicle fuel cell electric powertrain by establishing a clear multi-step formalized workflow that employs a unique technoeconomic solution for architecture selection. The power capability of the fuel cell, the energy capacity and chemistry of the electrical energy storage (battery), the DC-DC converter (including the input current rating and isolation resistance requirements), the traction drive solution, the on-board hydrogen storage solution, and the real-time power-split management of the fuel cell and the battery are all considered and developed in this effort. The methods were used to select architecture for Class 8 urban, regional, and line haul applications. When compared to traditional load-following power-split controllers, an energy management power-split controller can increase system energy efficiency by up to 19.5%. The energy-efficient power-split controller may increase the required battery capacity for an equivalent life by up to 2.6 times. The impact on the total cost of ownership (TCO) for a variety of financial cases demonstrates that high C-rate capable batteries have the potential to provide better TCO solutions over a six-year vehicle life than low C-rate capable batteries. To achieve TCO parity with the 600 A non-isolated DC-DC converter case, the specific choice of the fuel cell DC-DC converter to achieve a target power output based on current levels (from 500 A to 2400 A) shows that efficiency decreases and cost increases due to the higher current, requiring fuel cell prices to decrease by $50–$100/kW, $60–$110/kW, and $100–$220/kW for urban, regional, and line haul applications, respectively. Key recommendations for powertrain system architectures are provided, with specifics based on vehicle dynamics, mission and application characteristics, end customer use-case profile, critical powertrain component costs, and architecture selection cost function. This study rigorously demonstrates the interplay of the above parameters, with a focus on TCO, and provides application decision-makers with a mechanism and well-defined set of impact factors to consider as part of their architecture selection process.

CSM docked DAP/orbital assembly bending interaction-axial case

A digital autopilot which can provide attitude control for the entire Skylab orbital assembly using the service module reaction control jets is described. An important consideration is the potential interaction of the control system with the bending modes of the orbital assembly. Two aspects of this potential interaction were considered. The first was the possibility that bending induced rotations feeding back through the attitude sensor into the control system could produce an instability or self-sustained oscillation. The second was whether the jet activity commanded by the control system could produce excessive loads at any of the critical load points of the orbital assembly. Both aspects were studied by using analytic techniques and by running simulations on the all-digital simulator.

A 10,000-gpm liquid hydrogen transfer system for the Saturn/Apollo program.

Brief description of the design and operation of the liquid hydrogen transfer system used to service the Saturn V launch vehicle. The cryogenic loading of the huge booster begins eight hours before the scheduled liftoff. The first three hours of fueling are spent in cold hydrogen gas conditioning of the fuel tank. The cold hydrogen gas is provided by vaporizing liquid hydrogen from the storage tank and routing the resultant gas through the fill system. Boil-off losses after loading are continuously replaced through control valves which are driven by a computer system. The liquid hydrogen transfer system is made up of a number of subsystems including the 850,000 gal storage tank whose boil-off losses amount to only 200 gal/day, the pressurization system, the burn pond for controlled disposal of hydrogen waste gas, the storage tank fill manifold, and the hazardous gas monitoring system. Some of the subsystems and components are redundant to provide a high degree of reliability.

Hingeless rotor theory and experiment on vibration reduction by periodic variation of conventional controls

A preliminary evaluation is made of the concept of vibration reduction by properly selected oscillatory collective and cyclic control applications. The investigations are based on experimental frequency response data covering advance ratios from approximately 0.2 to 0.85. Because there was no instrumentation for the measurement of the pitch and roll vibrations, these values were obtained by properly adding up the flap-bending moments at 3.3 in. Any other quantity representing pitch/roll vibrations can be compensated for in the same fashion. The calculated control inputs required for vibration reduction stay within acceptable limits. For four of the five conditions tested they are smaller than the values used for the frequency response tests. As to be expected, the compensating controls greatly affect the blade loads, i.e., torsion, flap- and chordwise bending.

Stability and Control Harmony in Approach and Landing

A review of the factors which affect stability and control harmony in approach and landing is made to obtain a clearer understanding of the proper relationship, the trade-offs involved, and to show how limits in stability and control harmony are established for advanced aircraft. Factors which influence stability and control harmony include the longitudinal short period response of the aircraft and the level of several pitch control characteristics including control power, control sensitivity, and control feel. At low stability levels for advanced aircraft, less conventional control techniques such as DLC are needed to improve harmony and some form of stability augmentation must be provided to improve precession of flight path control and reduce pilot work load.
