Medium Voltage Integrated Drive and Motor

The objective of this program was to design, build, and test a medium voltage (4,160VAC) high speed permanent magnet machine (HSPMM) and variable speed drive (VSD) that incorporates next generation 10kV silicon carbide (SiC) modules. The use of a HSPMM allows for high efficiency, small footprint, maintenance free operation while the SiC modules enable higher voltage operating conditions, improved efficiency, and small footprint.

Recycling Rare Earth Elements From End-of-Life Electric and Hybrid Electric Vehicle Motors

In this presentation, we first provide context on the increasing demand for rare earth elements and the current state of rare earth element mining worldwide. We then justify our decision to choose end-of-life electric and hybrid electric vehicles as a feedstock and propose a superstructure-based approach to finding the optimal pathways for recovering rare earth elements in their commercialized rare earth oxide form from them.

Integrated Motor and Drive (IMD) for Traction Applications Project (Final Technical Report)

This paper proposes the concept of the topological equivalence between the commutation cells of a voltage source inverter (VSI) and a current source inverter (CSI) using duality and equivalent circuit transformation techniques. A switching resonance of CSI is analyzed and an effective three-phase RC damper is derived from the dc-link RC damper of VSIs based on the topological equivalence of the VSI and CSI commutation cells. Furthermore, a new three-phase RC damper design framework utilizing the topological equivalence is proposed. Experimental results verify that the proposed three-phase RC damper design for CSI significantly reduces the switching resonance and improves the CSI’s output waveform total harmonics distortions (THDs).

Experience of developing highly reliable Tuner components (piezo actuators and cold stepper motor actuators) for SRF Linac

The resonance control team at FNAL has led the design of the LCLS-II SRF Linac SRF cavity tuner subsystem. The Linac is expected to operate for over 30 years, and the longevity of the tuner is crucial to the overall reliability of the Linac. When the tuner's design was started, there were no active actuators (stepper and piezo) that could meet the longevity requirements of the Linac. The FNAL resonance control team, in collaboration with industrial partners (Phytron and PI), has developed actuators that have been shown to withstand a cryogenic and insulating vacuum environment for over 100 years in accelerated lifetime tests. Details of actuators design and longevity testing will be presented. Now, practically all (small and large) SRF systems that are under construction around the world are using actuators developed at FNAL. A review of possible actuators improvement will be presented.

Enhanced Second Generation (2G) High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) wire for Electric Motor Applications

This project focused on the development of a revolutionary Second Generation (2G) high temperature superconducting (HTS) wire engineered specifically to meet the requirements for a new generation of high temperature superconducting electric machines. This novel design combined a roll-to-roll irradiation process to enhance the performance of the HTS wire in the presence of strong magnetic fields (improved flux pinning) with an innovative process to incorporate multiple HTS layers within a single 2G wire.

Effects of Ionizing Radiation on Solid Rocket Motor Components

Problems which the solid propellant rocket engineer will encounter in designing for long-term storage in a radiation environment are discussed. A summary of present knowledge of the radiation environment is given. Mechanisms of radiation degradation and its effects on tensile properties of propellant binders are discussed qualitatively. Data from a program of irradiation of several propellants is presented. Properties of two of the propellants were changed significantly by doses of the order of 4 x 10(exp 6) rads.
