Mass reduction for advanced winged entry vehicles through integrated thermostructural-trajectory design

This study examines the impact of aerothermo-structure design integration on thermal protection system (TPS) mass for advanced winged entry vehicles. Four basic categories of TPS are considered: external insulation, metallic hot structures, metallic standoff, and hybrid systems. A variety of concepts that fit in these basic categories are examined. Entry trajectories tailored specifically to the characteristics of each TPS concept are generated. An aerodynamic heating program is used with the appropriately tailored trajectories to determine the centerline TPS requirements for each concept. Included in the investigation is the impact on the combined TPS-structure mass of structural materials which maintain their integrity to higher temperatures. Results indicate that significant mass reduction can be realized through appropriate aerothermo-structure design integration. An assessment is made of the relative merits of the TPS/structure/trajectory combinations considered in the study.

Feasibility study of an integrated optic switching center

The design of a high data rate switching center for a satellite tracking station is discussed. The feasibility of a switching network using an integrated switching matrix is assessed. The preferred integrated optical switching scheme was found to be an electro-optic Bragg diffraction switch. To ascertain the advantages of the integrated optics switching center, its properties are compared to those of opto-electronic and to electronics switching networks.

Integrated and spectral energetics of the GLAS general circulation model

Integrated and spectral error energetics of the Goddard Laboratory for Atmospheric Sciences (GLAS) general circulation model are compared with observations for periods in January 1975, 1976, and 1977. For two cases the model shows significant skill in predicting integrated energetics quantities out to two weeks, and for all three cases, the integrated monthly mean energetics show qualitative improvements over previous versions of the model in eddy kinetic energy and barotropic conversions. Fundamental difficulties remain with leakage of energy to the stratospheric level. General circulation model spectral energetics predictions are compared with the corresponding observational spectra on a day by day basis. Eddy kinetic energy can be correct while significant errors occur in the kinetic energy of wavenumber three. Single wavenumber dominance in eddy kinetic energy and the correlation of spectral kinetic and potential energy are demonstrated.

Integrated residential photovoltaic array development

The design details of an optimized integrated residential photovoltaic module/array are presented. This selected design features a waterproofing and mounting scheme which was devised to simplify the installation procedures by the avoidance of complex gasketed or caulked joints, while still maintaining a high confidence that the watertight integrity of the integral roofing surface will be achieved for the design lifetime of the system. The production and installation costs for the selected module/array design are reported for a range of annual production rates as a function of the cost of solar cells.

Contact integrity testing of stress-tested silicon terrestrial solar cells

A test procedure was developed and applied to terrestrial silicon solar cells in order to determine the effect of accelerated environmental and time-temperature aging on metal contact integrity. Quantities of cells of four different manufacturers were given the contact integrity test after being subjected to accelerated stress tests that included forward bias-temperature, thermal cycle and thermal shock, power cycle, and bias-temperature humidity tests at two temperature-humidity levels. Significant effects due to certain stress tests were found for some cell types. It is concluded that cells fabricated using plated nickel/solder metallization showed significantly more serious contact integrity degradation than silver-metallized cells.

Integrated transient thermal-structural finite element analysis

An integrated thermal-structural finite element approach for efficient coupling of transient thermal and structural analysis is presented. New integrated thermal-structural rod and one dimensional axisymmetric elements considering conduction and convection are developed and used in transient thermal-structural applications. The improved accuracy of the integrated approach is illustrated by comparisons with exact transient heat conduction-elasticity solutions and conventional finite element thermal-finite element structural analyses. Results indicate that the approach offers significant potential for further development with other elements.

A new payload integration method

This paper introduces a new payload integration method. The system equations of motion are derived in terms of interface-restrained booster and payload modes. These system equations are directly integrated, avoiding the solution of an expensive eigenvalue problem. A modified Newmark-Chan-Beta numerical scheme is used to perform this integration. Due to the unique form of the system equations it is possible to achieve significant savings. A similar savings is feasible for the computation of the internal loads. This new approach does not involve approximations. Although completely general, the presented technique is most effective when the number of interface degrees of freedom is relatively small. Both determinate and indeterminate interfaces are allowed.

Integrate oral communication with technical writing: Towards a rationale

Integrating oral communication and technical writing instruction, to give students the opportunity to learn and practice interpersonal skills, is proposed. By linking speech and writing the importance of small-group interaction in developing transferrable ideas is acknowledged. Three reasons for integration are examined: workday activities, application of role-taking to writing, and conflict resolution. Four advantages of integration are stated.

Interferometric surface-wave acousto-optic time-integrating correlators

A structure for a coherent-interferometric acousto-optic (AO) time-integrating correlator was implemented by using a single surface acoustic wave (SAW) device with tilted transducers to reduce intermodulation terms. The SAW device was fabricated on Y-Z LiNbO3 with a center frequency of 175 MHz, a bandwidth of 60 MHz, and a time aperture of about 10 micros. The density of the photodetector array, with a potential of 120 MHz. Typical integration times are 30 to 40 ms, providing processing gains in excess of 10 to the 6th power. Such a device is useful in providing fast synchronization of communication links and in demodulating to base band and simultaneously acting as a synchronization lock monitor for moderate data rates. Where processing may be limited by Doppler shifts, a two dimensional architecture was implemented to allow full processing gain. Two one-dimensional, SAW AO time-integrating correlators and a two dimensional correlator are evaluated.

Integrated and spectral energetics of the GLAS general circulation model

Integrated and spectral error energetics of the GLAS General circulation model are compared with observations for periods in January 1975, 1976, and 1977. For two cases the model shows significant skill in predicting integrated energetics quantities out to two weeks, and for all three cases, the integrated monthly mean energetics show qualitative improvements over previous versions of the model in eddy kinetic energy and barotropic conversions. Fundamental difficulties remain with leakage of energy to the stratospheric level, particularly above strong initial jet streams associated in part with regions of steep terrain. The spectral error growth study represents the first comparison of general circulation model spectral energetics predictions with the corresponding observational spectra on a day by day basis. The major conclusion is that eddy kinetics energy can be correct while significant errors occur in the kinetic energy of wavenumber 3. Both the model and observations show evidence of single wavenumber dominance in eddy kinetic energy and the correlation of spectral kinetics and potential energy.

Integrated thermal-structural analysis of large space structures

Optimum performance of large space antennas requires very fine control of the shape of the antenna surface since the shape affects both frequency control and pointing accuracy. A significant factor affecting the antenna shape is the temperature of the structure and the resulting deformation. To accurately predict the temperature of the structure, it is necessary first to accurately predict thermal loads. As the structure orbits the Earth, the thermal loads change constantly so that the thermal-structural response varies continuously throughout the orbit. The results from recent applications of integrated finite element methodology to heat load determination and thermal-structural analysis of large space structures are given. Four areas are concentrated on: (1) the characteristics of the integrated finite element methodology, (2) fundamentals of orbital heat load calculation, (3) description and comparison of some radiation finite elements, and (4) application of the integrated finite-element approach to the thermal-structural analysis of an orbiting truss structure.

Problems related to the integration of fault tolerant aircraft electronic systems

Problems related to the design of the hardware for an integrated aircraft electronic system are considered. Taxonomies of concurrent systems are reviewed and a new taxonomy is proposed. An informal methodology intended to identify feasible regions of the taxonomic design space is described. Specific tools are recommended for use in the methodology. Based on the methodology, a preliminary strawman integrated fault tolerant aircraft electronic system is proposed. Next, problems related to the programming and control of inegrated aircraft electronic systems are discussed. Issues of system resource management, including the scheduling and allocation of real time periodic tasks in a multiprocessor environment, are treated in detail. The role of software design in integrated fault tolerant aircraft electronic systems is discussed. Conclusions and recommendations for further work are included.

Integrated airframe propulsion control

Perturbation equations which describe flight dynamics and engine operation about a given operating point are combined to form an integrated aircraft/propulsion system model. Included in the model are the dependence of aerodynamic coefficients upon atmospheric variables along with the dependence of engine variables upon flight condition and inlet performance. An off-design engine performance model is used to identify interaction parameters in the model. Inclusion of subsystem interaction effects introduces coupling between flight and propulsion variables. To analyze interaction effects on control, consideration is first given to control requirements for separate flight and engine models. For the separate airframe model, feedback control provides substantial improvement in short period damping. For the integrated system, feedback control compensates for the coupling present in the model and provides good overall system stability. However, this feedback control law involves many non-zero gains. Analysis of suboptimal control strategies indicates that performance of the closed loop integrated system can be maintained with a feedback matrix in which the number of non-zero gains is small relative to the number of components in the feedback matrix.

Numerical integration of the satellites of the outer planets

The formulation of a numerical integration program, used to construct ephemerides for satellites of the outer planets, is described. The equations of motion are derived, including (1) n massive integrated satellites, (2) m massive perturbing planets, (3) J2, J4 oblateness coefficients of the primary and each satellite, and (4) a barycentric coordinate system. Variational equations are also found: (1) 6n initial states and n masses of the integrated satellites, (2) J2, J4 of the primary planet, (3) the mass of the system, and (4) right ascension and declination of the pole. The formulation was used to construct the satellite ephemerides of Saturn for the Voyager mission.
