In-beam 𝛾-ray spectroscopy toward the proton dripline: The curious case of 32 Ar

High-resolution in-beam 𝛾-ray spectroscopy was used to study excited states of the neutron-deficient nucleus 32 Ar populated in fast-beam induced four- and six-nucleon removal reactions from 36,38 Ca. One new 𝛾-ray transition and indications for an additional two were found, allowing for a glimpse at the level scheme beyond the 2$^{+}_{1}$ state. The nature of the new 1900⁢(4)-keV transition is discussed in the context of the known energy spectrum of the mirror nucleus 32 Si and shell-model calculations using the FSU and SDPF-M cross-shell effective interactions. Its resulting parent state at 3767⁢(5)⁢keV, more than 1.3 MeV above the proton separation energy, is tentatively assigned to have mixed 𝑠⁢𝑑-shell and 2p-2h character. It might either be the mirror of the 𝐽 𝜋 = 2$^{+}_{2}$ state of 32 Si at 4230.8⁢(8)⁢keV, but with a decay branch favoring a transition to the 2$^{+}_{2}$ over the ground state, or the mirror of the 4983.9⁢(11)-keV state with quantum numbers 0 + . Furthermore, the resulting mirror-energy differences of −473⁢(5) and −1218⁢(5)⁢keV are both sizable when compared to systematics; in the latter case the result would, in fact, be among the largest reported to date in the nuclear chart or suggest the potential existence of an additional, hitherto unidentified, low-lying 0 + state of 32 Si.

Helical versus collinear antiferromagnetic order tuned by magnetic anisotropy in polar and chiral (Ni,Mn) 3 TeO 6

In this work, polar and chiral Ni 3 TeO 6 was found to exhibit a colossal magnetoelectric (ME) effect associated with collinear antiferromagnetic order. We have investigated the evolution of its magnetic state with the substitution of the Ni 2+ spins by isotropic Mn 2+ spins, namely (Ni, Mn) 3 TeO 6 (NMTO). The ground state of NMTO maintains an Ising nature, but a new phase with XY-type magnetic anisotropy is discovered at an intermediate temperature range. Neutron powder diffraction experiments reveal that (1) Mn ions tend to occupy a specific transition-metal site, consistent with the first-principle calculation, and (2) the intermediate phase is an incommensurate (IC) helical magnetic state propagating along the $\textit{c}$ axis with $\vec q_{\text{IC}}$ = (0, 0, 1.5 ± δ). We also found that the balance between these two magnetic states can be readily manipulated with magnetic fields, which results in significant ME effects. This selective site occupancy of NMTO allows for a unique competition between collinear and helical magnetic structures with minimal chemical disorder. Thus, NMTO serves as a model system to study site-specific chemical control of noncollinear magnetism and ME coupling.

Muonium hydride: The lowest density crystal

A muonium hydride molecule is a bound state of muonium and hydrogen atoms. It has half the mass of a parahydrogen molecule and very similar electronic properties in its ground state. The phase diagram of an assembly of such particles is investigated by first-principles quantum simulations. In the bulk limit, the low-temperature equilibrium phase is a crystal of extraordinarily low density, lower than that of any other known atomic or molecular crystal. Despite the low density and particle mass, the melting temperature is surprisingly high (close to 9 K). No (metastable) supersolid phase is observed. We investigated the physical properties of nanoscale clusters (up to 200 particles) of muonium hydride and found the superfluid response to be greatly enhanced compared to that of parahydrogen clusters. The possible experimental realization of these systems is discussed.

Realistic Cost to Execute Practical Quantum Circuits using Direct Clifford+T Lattice Surgery Compilation

We report a resource estimation pipeline that explicitly compiles quantum circuits expressed using the Clifford+T gate set into a surface code lattice surgery instruction set. The cadence of magic state requests from the compiled circuit enables the optimization of magic state distillation and storage requirements in a post-hoc analysis. To compile logical circuits into lattice surgery operations, we build upon the open-source Lattice Surgery Compiler. The revised compiler operates in two stages: the first translates logical gates into an abstract, layout-independent instruction set; the second compiles these into local lattice surgery instructions that are allocated to hardware tiles according to a specified resource layout. The second stage retains logical parallelism while avoiding resource contention in the fault-tolerant layer, aiding realism. Additionally, users can specify dedicated tiles at which magic states are replenished, enabling resource costs from the logical computation to be considered independently from magic state distillation and storage. We demonstrate the applicability of our pipeline to large practical quantum circuits by providing resource estimates for the ground state estimation of molecules. Finally, we find that variable magic state consumption rates in real circuits can cause the resource costs of magic state storage to dominate unless production is varied to suit.

MCSCF + Cl wavefunctions and properties of the X2-Pi and A2-Pi states of ClO

A multiconfiguration, self-consistent field plus configuration-interaction calculation has been performed on the X2-Pi and A2-Pi electronic states of ClO. The values of certain molecular properties computed from the wavefunctions agree well with those from experiment. The sum of the squares of the computed electronic transition moments between the X2-Pi and A2-Pi states at 3.07 bohr is 1.75 a.u., which corresponds to the experimental result of 1.58 plus or minus 0.20 a.u. The computed ground state dipole moment at the experimental equilibrium separation is 1.232 D, which compares well with two experimental results of 1.18 plus or minus 0.12 and 1.239 plus or minus 0.010 D. The value of the computed dissociation energy is 2.75 eV, which agrees well with the experimental value of 2.803 plus or minus 0.001 eV.

Short pulse multicolor laser ranging systems are currently being developed for satellite ranging applications. These systems use Q-switched pulsed lasers and streak tube cameras to provide timing accuracies approaching a few picoseconds. Satellite laser ranging systems was used to evaluate many important geophysical phenomena such as fault motion, polar motion and solid earth tides, by measuring the orbital perturbations of retroreflector equipped satellites. Some existing operational systems provide range resolution approaching a few millimeters. There is currently considerable interest in adapting these highly accurate systems for use as airborne and satellite based altimeters. Potential applications include the measurement of sea state, ground topography and atmospheric pressure. This paper reviews recent progress in the development of multicolor laser altimeters for use in monitoring sea state and atmospheric pressure.

Amplitude squeezed light from a laser

Intensity squeezed light was successfully generated using semiconductor lasers with sub-Poissonian pumping. Control of the pumping statistics is crucial and is achieved by a large series resistor which regulates the pump current; its sub-Poissonian statistics are then transferred to the laser output. The sub-Poissonian pumping of other laser systems is not so simple, however, and their potential as squeezed states sources is apparently diminished. We consider a conventional laser incoherently pumped well above threshold, and allow for pump depletion of the ground state. In this regime, sub-Poissonian photon statistics and squeezed amplitude fluctuations are produced.

Tunable Magnetic Exchange between Rare-Earth Metal 5d and Iron 3d States: A Case Study of the Multiple Magnetic Transitions in Gd 6 FeBi 2 and the Solid Solutions Dy 6– x Gd x FeBi 2 (1 ≤ x ≤ 5) with Curie Temperatures in the Range 120–350 K

In this paper, the room-temperature magnet Gd 6 FeBi 2 was comprehensively characterized by means of temperature-dependent single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetization measurements, and experimental electron density and electronic structure computations. This work explores the electron-spin effects of Fe on this structure and suggests that Gd6FeBi2 shows structural features and exchange interactions, which are clearly distinguishable from other analogues, including the solid solutions Dy 6–x Gd x FeBi 2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 5). The unique traits of Gd 6 FeBi 2 and its derivatives encompass abnormal variations of lattice parameters with the temperature, as well as the presence of multiple magnetic transitions of complex nature. Based on the comprehensive analyses, it can be suggested that the unique magnetic response in this material is the result from tunable Fe spin states, which are coupled with strong Gd 5d–Fe 3d interactions, which differ from other members of this large, structural family. In the ground state, according to density functional theory calculations, the Fe atom carries two net electrons, whose spins are coupled in an antiparallel fashion to the spins of the Gd electrons. Near the Curie temperature, the Fe net moment is reduced intermittently, coupled with a multiple of magnetic transitions. The magnetic correlations are manifested in unexpected variations of the lattice parameters as a function of temperature, suggesting spin–lattice interactions. Furthermore, this study emphasizes the important role of Gd 5d electrons in tuning Fe 3d-based magnetic contribution, which enables better understanding on the spin coupling in other related compounds and sheds light on the development of new magnetic and spintronic compounds.

Exchange-biased quantum tunnelling of magnetization in a [Mn 3 ] 2 dimer of single-molecule magnets with rare ferromagnetic inter-Mn 3 coupling

A covalently-linked dimer of two single-molecule magnets (SMMs), [Mn 6 O(O 2 CMe) 6 (1,3-ppmd) 3 ](ClO 4 ) 2 , has been synthesized from the reaction of [Mn 3 O(O 2 CMe) 6 (py) 3 ](ClO 4 ) with 1,3-phenylene-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethanone) dioxime (1,3-ppmdH 2 ). It contains two [Mn III 3 O] +7 triangular units linked by three 1,3-ppmd 2 - groups into an [Mn 3 ] 2 dimer with D 3 symmetry. Solid-state dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements showed that each Mn 3 subunit retains its properties as an SMM with an S = 6 ground state. Magnetization vs. dc field sweeps on a single crystal reveal hysteresis loops below 1.3 K exhibiting exchange-biased quantum tunnelling of magnetization (QTM) steps with a bias field of +0.06 T. This is the first example of a dimer of SMMs showing a positive exchange bias of the QTM steps in the hysteresis loops, and it has therefore been subjected to a detailed analysis. Simulation of the loops determines that each Mn3 unit is exchange-coupled with its neighbour primarily through the 1,3-ppmd 2 - linkers, confirming a weak ferromagnetic inter-Mn 3 interaction of J 12 ≈ +6.5 mK ($\hat{H}= -2J\hat{S}_i·\hat{S}_j$ convention). High-frequency EPR studies of a microcrystalline powder sample enable accurate determination of the zero-field splitting parameters of the uncoupled Mn3 SMMs, while also confirming the weak exchange interaction between the two SMMs within each [Mn 3 ] 2 dimer. The combined results emphasize the ability of designed covalent linkers to generate inter-SMM coupling of a particular sign and relative magnitude, and thus the ability of such linkers to modulate the quantum physics. As such, this article supports the feasibility of using designed covalent linkers to develop molecular oligomers of SMMs, or other magnetic molecules, as multi-qubit systems and/or other components of new quantum technologies.

Hydrogen bonds and dispersion forces serving as molecular locks for tailored Group 11 bis(amidine) complexes

A flexible polydentate bis(amidine) ligand LH 2 , LH 2 = {CH 2 NH( t Bu)C=N-2-(6-MePy)} 2 , operates as a molecular lock for various coinage metal fragments and forms the dinuclear complexes [LH 2 (MCl) 2 ], M = Cu (1), Au (2), the coordination polymer [{(LH 2 ) 2 (py) 2 (AgCl) 3 }(py) 3 ] n (3), and the dimesityl-digold complex [LH 2 (AuMes) 2 ] (4) by formal insertion of MR fragments (M = Cu, Ag, Au; R = Cl, Mes) into the N–H∙∙∙N hydrogen bonds of LH 2 in yields of 43–95%. Complexes 1, 2, and 4 adopt C 2 -symmetrical structures in the solid state featuring two interconnected 11-membered rings that are locked by two intramolecular N–H∙∙∙R–M hydrogen bonds. QTAIM analyses of the computational geometry-optimized structures 1a, 2a, and 4a reveal 13, 11, and 22 additional bond critical points, respectively, all of which are related to weak intramolecular attractive interactions, predominantly representing dispersion forces, contributing to the conformational stabilization of the C2-symmetrical stereoisomers in the solid state. Variable-temperature 1 H NMR spectroscopy in combination with DFT calculations indicate a dynamic conformational interconversion between two C 2 -symmetrical ground state structures in solution (ΔG ‡ c = 11.1–13.8 kcal mol –1 ), which is accompanied by the formation of an intermediate possessing C i symmetry that retains the hydrogen bonds.

A self-consistent field formulation of excited state mean field theory

In this work, we show that, as in Hartree-Fock theory, the orbitals for excited state mean field theory can be optimized via a self-consistent one-electron equation in which electron-electron repulsion is accounted for through mean field operators. In addition to showing that this excited state ansatz is sufficiently close to a mean field product state to admit a one-electron formulation, this approach brings the orbital optimization speed to within roughly a factor of two of ground state mean field theory. The approach parallels Hartree Fock theory in multiple ways, including the presence of a commutator condition, a one-electron mean-field working equation, and acceleration via direct inversion in the iterative subspace. When combined with a configuration interaction singles Davidson solver for the excitation coefficients, the self-consistent field formulation dramatically reduces the cost of the theory compared to previous approaches based on quasi-Newton descent.

Interfacial charge transfer and its impact on transport properties of LaNiO 3 /LaFeO 3 superlattices

Charge transfer or redistribution at oxide heterointerfaces is a critical phenomenon, often leading to remarkable properties such as two-dimensional electron gas and interfacial ferromagnetism. Despite studies on LaNiO 3 /LaFeO 3 superlattices and heterostructures, the direction and magnitude of the charge transfer remain debated, with some suggesting no charge transfer due to the high stability of Fe 3+ (3d 5 ). Here, we synthesized a series of epitaxial LaNiO 3 /LaFeO 3 superlattices and demonstrated partial (up to ~0.5 e - /interface unit cell) charge transfer from Fe to Ni near the interface, supported by density functional theory simulations and spectroscopic evidence of changes in Ni and Fe oxidation states. The electron transfer from LaFeO 3 to LaNiO 3 and the subsequent rearrangement of the Fe 3d band create an unexpected metallic ground state within the LaFeO 3 layer, strongly influencing the in-plane transport properties across the superlattice. Moreover, we establish a direct correlation between interfacial charge transfer and in-plane electrical transport properties, providing insights for designing functional oxide heterostructures with emerging properties.

Algebraic Bethe Circuits

The Algebraic Bethe Ansatz (ABA) is a highly successful analytical method used to exactly solve several physical models in both statistical mechanics and condensed-matter physics. Here we bring the ABA into unitary form, for its direct implementation on a quantum computer. This is achieved by distilling the non-unitary R matrices that make up the ABA into unitaries using the QR decomposition. Our algorithm is deterministic and works for both real and complex roots of the Bethe equations. We illustrate our method on the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XX and XXZ models. We show that using this approach one can efficiently prepare eigenstates of the XX model on a quantum computer with quantum resources that match previous state-of-the-art approaches. We run small-scale error mitigated implementations on the IBM quantum computers, including the preparation of the ground state for the XX and XXZ models on 4 sites. Finally, we derive a new form of the Yang-Baxter equation using unitary matrices, and also verify it on a quantum computer.

Determining the Absorbance Spectra of Photochromic Materials From Measured Spectrophotometer Data

If a two-state photochromic material is optically bleached, the absorbance spectrum data measured by a spectrophotometer is in general comprised of components from both the ground state and the upper state. Under general conditions, it may be difficult to extract the actual upper state spectrum from the spectrum of the bleached material. A simple algorithm is presented here for the recovery of the pure absorbance spectra of the upper state of a material such as bacteriorhodopsin, given single wavelength bleaching illumination, steady-state conditions, and accurate knowledge of phototransition rates and thermal decay rates.

Electron-doping-induced destabilization of the dimerized insulating state in monolayer IrTe 2

The ability to tune the electronic phases of two-dimensional (2D) materials through external perturbations provides a powerful route to engineer functional nanoscale systems. In particular, the ground state of monolayer (ML) 1T-IrTe 2 is highly sensitive to the interplay between local chemical bonding and global electronic topology, leading to a unique 2 × 1 dimerized insulating phase. Here, we present an angle-resolved photoemission study on the evolution of the electronic structure in ML IrTe 2 induced by in situ Rb adsorption. We find that Rb adsorption suppresses the 2 × 1 dimerized phase in ML IrTe 2 , inducing a clear insulator-to-metal transition. This transition is characterized by a reconstruction of the band topology toward a bilayer-like metallic configuration. Combined with first-principles calculations, our results demonstrate that the collapse of the insulating state originates from Ir valence change and suppression of Fermi surface nesting-driven instabilities. Our findings establish ML IrTe 2 as a model system for investigating instability-driven phase control in 2D materials and highlight its potential for tunable electronic applications.

Phonon dynamics in quantum spin liquid and valence bond crystal states in the barlowite family of kagome magnets

The barlowite [Cu 4 ⁢(OD) 6⁢ FBr] family of materials is characterized by antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 kagome layers and are believed to host interesting ground states of quantum magnetism. Substituting the interlayer sites with zinc ions yields Zn-barlowite (Zn 𝑥 ⁢Cu 4−𝑥 ⁢(OD) 6 ⁢FBr, 𝑥 ≈ 0.80) which is a strong candidate to have a quantum spin liquid (QSL) state. Experimentally distinguishing between valence bond crystal (VBC) and QSL states in the absence of magnetic ordering can prove challenging as both states exhibit similar average spin-spin correlations. Using high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering with 1.4 meV energy resolution, we probe acoustic phonons in these structurally similar materials at various temperatures. Our measurements uncover robust differences possibly driven by different spin-phonon physics in VBC and QSL states, particularly at the 𝑀-point Brillouin zone boundary. Over a large 𝑇=[15,200]⁢ K temperature range, where neither material undergoes magnetic ordering nor a structural transition, we observe phonon softening in Zn-barlowite in contrast to a hardening of the same phonon in barlowite. Further, these results indicate that acoustic phonons in the barlowite system can be used to study and possibly distinguish between QSL and disordered VBC states in quantum magnets.

Three-body Coulomb bound states

The binding energies of three-particle systems containing two electrons and one positive particle of mass M are reexamined in an attempt to understand the approximate proportionality of the 1Se ground-state binding energies of the reduced masses, as pointed out by Botero and Green (1986). The contribution to the energy of the mass-polarization term is evaluated. No fundamental principle is involved, since the mass polarization merely decreases somewhat as the mass of the positive particle is reduced below the proton mass. In the case of the excited 3Pe state, this reduction is not sufficient to allow binding when M approaches the electron mass. Some properties of the recently observed negative muonium ion (e/-/ mu/+/ e/-/) are also computed.
