High resolution X-ray scattering measurements for Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility /AXAF/

The Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF) is to be an orbiting X-ray observatory with high resolution imaging capabilities. Specific goals of 0.5 arcsecond resolution, and an encircled energy of 60% within a 1.0 arcsecond diameter circle at 2.5 keV have been established for AXAF. Imaging X-ray optics are primarily limited by scattering of the X-rays from the mirror surfaces. To ensure that the AXAF goals can be met, comprehensive X-ray scattering measurements are being conducted on a large number of flat samples. Sub-arcsecond resolution is achieved in these measurements through use of the MSFC 1000 ft X-ray calibration facility and a high spatial resolution X-ray detector. Flats of various materials, various coatings, and a range of rms surface roughness are being evaluated. Direct evaluation of surface microroughness is also provided by a variety of optical and non-optical means. This paper describes the scattering measurement program, the instrumentation used to obtain the measurements and preliminary results of measurements on several of the sample flats.

Hardware synthesis from DDL

The details of the digital systems can be conveniently input into the design automation system by means of Hardware Description Languages (HDL). The Computer Aided Design and Test (CADAT) system at NASA MSFC is used for the LSI design. The Digital Design Language (DDL) has been selected as HDL for the CADAT System. DDL translator output can be used for the hardware implementation of the digital design. This paper addresses problems of selecting the standard cells from the CADAT standard cell library to realize the logic implied by the DDL description of the system.

Model verification studies using accurate measurements of spin up

The reliability and accuracy of the numerical code for spin up flows in a cylinder by comparing the numerical results against high resolution laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) measurements of the azimuthal flows were checked. A computer code to generate numerical solution for axisymmetric rotating fluid in a cylinder was obtained and amended for routine use at MSFC. The numerical simulations used the Navier-Stokes equations in axisymmetric form and employed finite difference techniques on both constant and variable grids. The numerical solutions are analyzed to gain further insight into the fundamental questions analyzed in rotating fluid dynamics.

Flow and thermal effects in continuous flow electrophoresis

In continuous flow electrophoresis the axial flow structure changes from a fully developed rectilinear form to one characterized by meandering as power levels are increased. The origin of this meandering is postulated to lie in a hydrodynamic instability driven by axial (and possibly lateral) temperature gradients. Experiments done at MSFC show agreement with the theory.

High-pressure LOX/hydrocarbon preburner injector investigation

The NASA-MSFC program to furnish a high-pressure LOX/hydrocarbon turbine drive combustor technology base for future booster engine programs is discussed. The program evaluated the LOX/RP-1 and LOX/methane preburner and gas generator performance and gas property prediction methods for fuel-rich and oxidizer-rich operating conditions. A small-scale hardware test program, which included 42 hot-fire tests of fuel-rich LOX/methane and LOX/RP-1 and oxidizer-rich LOX/methane, supplied information to reduce uncertainties in prediction techniques. The hot-fire results show that theoretical computer model features should be modified to support curves generated from experimental data.

Spacecraft automatic umbilical system

A conceptual definition of an appropriate berthing technique and a prototype design of an automatic umbilical system suitable for use with payloads carried by the Space Shuttle are presented. A four-element berthing system is described. This concept consists of a set of four remote manipulator system (RMS)-type end-effector capture/tie-down devices on the power system and corresponding RMS-type grapple fittings on the payload. In operation, the RMS maneuvers the payload to a position where the four grapple fittings can be snared within the end-effectors and then secured to the power system. The concept takes advantage of mechanisms and operating techniques developed for attaching the RMS to a payload. Although the umbilical installation is attached to the docking interface structure, its operation is independent and it must comply with a set of primary requirements specified by Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), which is presented.

Characterization of silicon-gate CMOS/SOS integrated circuits processed with ion implantation

The double layer metallization technology applied on p type silicon gate CMOS/SOS integrated circuits is described. A smooth metal surface was obtained by using the 2% Si-sputtered Al. More than 10% probe yield was achieved on solar cell controller circuit TCS136 (or MSFC-SC101). Reliability tests were performed on 15 arrays at 150 C. Only three arrays failed during the burn in, and 18 arrays out of 22 functioning arrays maintained the leakage current below 100 milli-A. Analysis indicates that this technology will be a viable process if the metal short circuit problem between the two metals can be reduced.

Ocular screening tests of elementary school children

This report presents an analysis of 507 abnormal retinal reflex images taken of Huntsville kindergarten and first grade students. The retinal reflex images were obtained by using an MSFC-developed Generated Retinal Reflex Image System (GRRIS) photorefractor. The system uses a 35 mm camera with a telephoto lens with an electronic flash attachment. Slide images of the eyes were examined for abnormalities. Of a total of 1835 students screened for ocular abnormalities, 507 were found to have abnormal retinal reflexes. The types of ocular abnormalities detected were hyperopia, myopia, astigmatism, esotropia, exotropia, strabismus, and lens obstuctions. The report shows that the use of the photorefractor screening system is an effective low-cost means of screening school children for abnormalities.

Preliminary Designs for Modifications to the X-Ray Source and Beam Monitor of the Marshall Space Flight Center's X-Ray Calibration Facility

Preliminary designs for modifications to the X-ray source and beam monitor of the MSFC X-Ray Calibration Facility to meet requirements for the calibration of the Advanced X-Ray Astrophysics Facility are considered. A rhodium plated copper target and rhodium foil filter are proposed as a source of X-rays of approximately 2.6 keV energy. Bragg scattering of the unpolarized X-ray beam from the present source through an angle of 90 deg by a single crystal placed on the axis of the guide tube is proposed as a source of approximately monoenergetic plane polarized X-rays. A sealed xenon proportional counter with a Beryllium window is proposed as a beam monitor for use between 2.5 and 8 keV to obtain improved detection efficiency.

Characteristics of RF Lightning Emission at 2 Ghz and 250 Mhz

Radio frequency emissions in the S-band and VHF range from lightning discharges are recorded by a facility developed at MSFC as part of a feasibility study of a satellite-based lightning mapping system. The recording facility receives RF emissions in both vertical and horizontal polarization and stores the data on magnetic tape. Output from any one antenna may also be selected for high speed digitization and disk storage. Improvement in both hardware and software have enhanced significantly the accuracy of data characterization and the speed of data collection. Emission records at VHF have higher signal strength than the S-band as expected. The records of cloud-to-ground discharges obtained so far give a 7-33 V/M peak equivalent signal strength (1 KHz at 10 kilometer) in the S-band range. The CG discharge structure is recognizable in most of the data collected. Considerable RF activity is present throughout the VHF records. The S-band data shows signals associated with limited portions of discharge history. The records obtained are from lightning activities within a 10 mile range.

Intercenter Problem Reporting and Corrective Action System (PRACAS)

The Kennedy Space Center is transforming the PRACA bath automatic data processing (ADP) system of today into a fully integrated data base with on-line update and retrieval capabilities. The present manual system of reporting (Datafax, mail, and telephone) to the off-site design and engineering organizations is to be replaced by direct access to the most current information as it accrues at KSC or VAFB. Two major goals of the Intercenter PRACA are to provide a single data depository for both launch sites and to fully integrate the problem data with engineering data as well as other relevant information. The resulting ADP system can provide a closed loop system for problem reporting, corrective action and recurrence control that should serve the engineering community as well as reliability and quality assurance at the launch sites, KSC and VAFB, and at the design centers, JSC and MSFC.

Separation processes during binary monotectic alloy production

Observation of microgravity solidification processes indicates that outside of sedimentation, at least two other important effects can separate the phases: critical-point wetting and spreading; and thermal migration of second-phase droplets due to interfacial tension gradients. It is difficult to study these surface tension effects while in a unit gravity field. In order to investigate the processes occurring over a temperature range, i.e., between a consolute point and the monotectic temperature, it is necessary to use a low-gravity environment. The MSFC drop tube (and tower), the ballistic trajectory KC-135 airplane, and the Space Shuttle are ideal facilities to aid formation and testing of hypotheses. Much of the early work in this area focuses on transparent materials so that process dynamics may be studied by optical techniques such as photography for viewing macro-processes; holography for studying diffusional growth; spinodal decomposition and coalescence; ellipsometry for surface wetting and spreading effects; and interferometry and spectroscopy for small-scale spatial resolution of concentration profiles.
