International Solar-Terrestrial Program Key Parameter Visualization Tool Data: USA_NASA_DDF_ISTP_IM_KP_0174

The Global Geospace Science Program (GGS) is designed to improve greatly the understanding of the flow of energy, mass and momentum in the solar-terrestrial environment with particular emphasis on "Geospace". The Global Geospace Science Program is the US contribution to the International Solar-Terrestrial Physics (ISTP) Science Initiative. This CD-ROM issue describes the WIND and POLAR spacecraft, the scientific experiments carried onboard, the Theoretical and Ground Based investigations which constitute the US Global Geospace Science Program and the ISTP Data Systems which support the data acquisition and analysis effort. The International Solar-Terrestrial Physics Program (ISTP) Key Parameter Visualization Tool (KPVT), provided on the CD-ROM, was developed at the ISTP Science Planning and Operations Facility (SPOF). The KPVT is a generic software package for visualizing the key parameter data produced from all ISTP missions, interactively and simultaneously. The tool is designed to facilitate correlative displays of ISTP data from multiple spacecraft and instruments, and thus the selection of candidate events and data quality control. The software, written in IDL, includes a graphical/widget user interface, and runs on many platforms, including various UNIX workstations, Alpha/Open VMS, Macintosh (680x0 and PowerPC), and PC/Windows NT, Windows 3.1, and Windows 95.

ALEXIS Observations of the Monogem Ring Supernova Remnant

The subject grant is for the analysis of ALEXIS observations of the Monogem Ring supernova remnant using the diffuse all-sky maps produced from the ALEXIS all-sky survey. The work is to produce ratio maps of the three energy bands provided by ALEXIS, analyze the ratio data to constrain the intervening neutral hydrogen column density and the temperature and elemental abundances of the X-ray emitting gas, compare the structure to that observed in the ROSAT maps, and incorporate the results into current supenova remnant evolution models. The work outlined above has been significantly delayed since the ALEXIS diffuse all-sky maps took longer to produce than anticipated. Unfortunately, the ALEXIS satellite suffered a failure of the Pegasus launch vehicle which left the satellite in a partially functioning condition. The attitude control system of the spacecraft was unable to operate as planned and this has greatly increased the complexity of the aspect solution. Our colleagues at Los Alamos have made progress in producing these maps and are nearing completion of the final maps. However, the quality of the data have been significantly compromised by the overall lower exposure due to the spacecraft problems and the higher background of the micro-channel plate detectors. We have compared the ALEXIS and ROSAT maps of this region of the sky and there is no obvious signal in the ALEXIS maps of the Monogem Ring. We are now exploring correlation techniques to determine if there is indeed a faint signal in the ALEXIS maps. Although, the project has been a disappointment so far, the data may still provide a valuable lower limit on the neutral hydrogen column density. This is a far cry from our original intentions, but would still be valuable science. Given the large delays in producing the ALEXIS sky maps, this work will continue past the end of the grant period.

TRMM: Status of Precipitation Estimates, Science Highlights, and 3-Hour Global, Tropical Precipitation Estimates

The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) has completed more than three years in orbit. A summary of research highlights will be presented focusing on application of TRMM data to topics ranging from climate analysis, through improving forecasts, to microphysical research. Examples and plans for operational use of TRMM data in tropical cyclone and other applications will be given. The status of precipitation estimates from different instruments and algorithms will be described. Monthly surface rainfall estimates over the ocean based on different instruments on TRMM currently differ by 20% in overall mean. In addition, time changes in global ocean rainfall between El Nino and La Nina conditions show a difference in sign between the active and passive microwave products. These differences are not surprising considering the different type of observations available for the first time from TRMM with both the passive and active microwave sensors. Resolving the differences will strengthen the validity and utility of ocean rainfall estimates. The TRMM rainfall estimates are intercompared among themselves and with other estimates, including those of the standard, monthly Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) analysis. The GPCP analysis agrees roughly in magnitude with the passive microwave-based TRMM estimates which is not surprising considering GPCP over-ocean estimates are based on passive microwave observations. A three-year TRMM rainfall climatology is presented, including anomaly fields related to the changing ENSO situation during the mission. Results of using TRMM information to calibrate other passive microwave observations and geosynchronous infrared rainfall estimates and then merging them those estimates into a global, tropical 3-hour time resolution analysis will also be described.
