NASA GRC Stirling Research Lab

The efficiency of conversion from thermal to electrical can be increased significantly by using the Stirling thermodynamic cycle •Alternate heating and cooling on volume of gas creates a pressure wave that drives a piston attached to an alternator •Heat can be supplied by any source –radioisotope •Cooling must also be provided for the waste heat portion of the cycle –radiant heat transfer to space •Up to 40% thermal-to-electric efficiency •Dynamic : has moving parts Cycle operation: •A displacer shuttles gas between the hot and cold ends to raise and lower the gas pressure •With displacer at the top, gas is pushed towards cold end, lowering the pressure •With displacer at the bottom, gas is pushed towards the hot-end, raising the pressure •The piston’s mechanical energy can then be utilized as desired –for electrical power it is coupled to an alternator •The motions of the piston and displacer can be controlled by mechanical linkages (kinematic) or by the working gas pressure (free piston)

Objectively Identifying Transverse Cirrus Bands in Tropical Cyclones using a Convolutional Neural Network

Transverse cirrus bands (TCBs) are a phenomenon that occurs in many mesoscale and synoptic weather systems, including tropical cyclones. TCBs are defined as "Bands of clouds oriented perpendicular to the flow in which they are embedded" (NOAA) and can be associated with low static stability and high environmental vertical wind shear in the upper levels (Kawashima 2021). TCBs in tropical cyclones are of particular interest due to their apparent occurrence and potential linkage to the tropical cyclone diurnal cycle, stronger tropical cyclones, and rapid intensification, where rapid intensification is an intensification rate of 30 knots or more in 24 hours (NHC).

Modeling the Formation and Eruption of Coronal Structures by Linking Data-Driven Magnetofrictional and MHD Simulations for AR 12673

Context .The data-driven and time-dependent modeling of coronal magnetic fields is crucial for understanding solar eruptions. These efforts are complicated by the challenges of finding a balance between physical realism and computing efficiency. One possible technique is to couple two modeling approaches. Aims . Our aim here is to showcase our progress in using time-dependent magnetofrictional model (TMFM) results as input to dynamical magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations. However, due to the different evolution processes in these two models, using TMFM snapshots in an MHD simulation is nontrivial. We address these issues, both physically and numerically, discuss the incompatibility of the TMFM output to serve as the initial condition in MHD simulations, and show our methods of mitigating this. The evolution of the flux systems and the cause of the eruption are investigated. Methods . TMFM is a prevalent approach that has proven to be a very useful tool in the study of the formation of unstable structures in the solar corona. In particular, it is capable of incorporating observational data as initial and boundary conditions and requires shorter computational time compared to MHD simulations. To leverage the efficiency of data-driven TMFM and also to simulate eruptive events in the MHD framework, one can apply TMFM up to a certain time before the expected eruption(s) and then proceed with the simulation in the full or ideal MHD regime in order to more accurately capture the eruption process. Results . We show the results of a benchmark test case with a linked TMFM and MHD simulation to study the evolution of NOAA active region 12673. A rise of a twisted flux bundle through the MHD simulation domain is observed, but we find that the rate of the rise and the altitude reached depends on the time of the TMFM snapshot that was used to initialize the MHD simulation and the helicity injected into the system. The analysis suggested that torus instability and slip-running reconnection could play an important role in the eruption. Conclusions . The results show that the linkage of TMFM and zero-β MHD models can be successfully used to model the eruptive coronal magnetic fields.

Scenario-Based Task Design for Airline Pilot Anticipatory Behaviors: Asynchronous Assessment of Complex Cognitive Skills

Airline pilots must anticipate potential threats to passenger safety and efficient flight. Such anticipation needs to occur at both the system and individual levels, yet no formal training for these anticipatory behaviors currently exists. The emerging field of resilience engineering provides a framework to explore this problem. Given the complex nature of this problem, the assessment portion of the project constituted a challenge. Simulator time is expensive as simulators are costly to run, and they are extremely limited in number. Also, by the nature of their work, pilots as a group are hard to connect with in person; thus, asynchronous methods were adopted. Further, to ensure that authentic pilot behaviors were observed, task-based scenarios were used rather than focus group or interview protocols. This session explores the design of asynchronous learning and a measure for assessing pilot anticipatory behaviors outside of a simulator to help design learning opportunities for pilots. The scenario-based and active assessment items will be discussed in detail, and demonstrations of these items will be shared. These items constitute the bulk of the challenge for this work. At the time of this writing, data is being collected to assess the effectiveness of the interactive training module and validate the measures. This data will be analyzed and presented as part of the session. This will include any linkages between the scenario-based and traditional assessment items.

Integrated Process-Structure-Property Simulations for Additive Manufacturing Using the Open-Source Materialite Package

The microstructure and properties of additively manufactured (AM) metals are strongly dependent on process conditions. Therefore, process-structure-property (PSP) simulations are a useful tool for exploring process parameter space, studying process variations, and quantifying uncertainty in material properties. However, integrating process-structure and structure-property simulations often involves connecting multiple software packages. Each package may use unique data structures and require substantial domain knowledge. This presentation demonstrates PSP simulation capabilities of Materialite, an open-source package developed at NASA Langley Research Center. Materialite simplifies model linkages by using a common data structure and model interface, enabling straightforward simulation across a PSP model chain. Physics-based models, including kinetic Monte Carlo and crystal plasticity, are implemented within the package. The model interface is also intended to simplify implementation of new models and enable integration with external simulation tools. Example use cases include uncertainty quantification with PSP models and GPU-accelerated powder bed fusion AM process models.

Development, Characterization, and Validation of Elevated-Temperature Constitutive Models: Deformation and Damage

This report provides a brief review of experimentally observed hereditary and nonhereditary material behavior along with background information on standard as well as advanced internal state variable constitutive modeling at elevated temperature. A description of exploratory, characterization, and validation testing is presented along with a detailed outline of what constitutes “sufficient” data content (i.e., quality and quantity) for developing or enhancing, characterizing, and validating a particular sophisticated nonlinear time- and history-dependent (hereditary) class of constitutive models known as GVIPS (generalized viscoplasticity with potential structure). The tests described are necessary to reveal a material’s behavior in the reversible (or viscoelastic) and irreversible (or viscoplastic) regimes, for the identification of both deformation and damage model parameters. Results presented are primarily for metallic materials. In all cases, both uniaxial and multiaxial tests are described, and the linkage between the specific tests and the parameters within the model that can be characterized from the results of these tests are also discussed. Discussion is also provided relative to the role information management must play relative to material data collection, analysis, maintenance, and dissemination. The need for such an information system is particularly important as both analyst and designer move toward utilizations of sophisticated, nonlinear time- and history dependent (hereditary) constitutive models. Lastly, the concept of state space and its utility in understanding and establishing constitutive models is addressed throughout. The intent behind this document is to help both the modeler and experimentalist understand each other’s specific points of view and provide guidance for both model development and characterization. Emphasis has been placed on providing the mechanician with information regarding how tests are performed and what issues to be aware of when interpreting results. It is hoped that experimentalists will take away a new perspective on the types of information that modelers and analysts are looking for from them.

Ice in Convective Storm Environments: Assessing Impacts of Microphysics on Simulated Reflectivities

Satellite radar retrievals of clouds and precipitation rely on assumptions about the microphysical properties of hydrometeors such as particle size distributions (PSDs) and massdimensional relationships, which have been shown to vary in distinct environments. A deeper understanding of linkages between mass-dimensional relationships, ice crystal shape, and radar reflectivities across cloud and precipitation regimes is necessary for developing new retrievals for upcoming satellite radar missions, including the INvestigation of Convective UpdraftS (INCUS), as well as future missions that will feature space-borne radars observing clouds, convection, and precipitation. This study investigates ice microphysical characteristics through aircraft in-situ and remote sensing observations from two convective events during the Mid-latitude Continental Convective Clouds Experiment (MC3E) in the Southern Great Plains, and tests implications for ice particle habit in forward modeled radar observations. During MC3E, the Ka/Ku- band High Altitude Imaging Wind and Rain Airborne Profiler (HIWRAP) was onboard the NASA ER-2 aircraft, while in-situ measurements were taken onboard the University of North Dakota Citation. In-situ PSDs and particle shape information from optical array probe data are used to forward model radar reflectivities from particle scattering databases and are compared against HIWRAP reflectivities. Various particle combinations can be used to find agreement with HIWRAP observations, and the forward modeled reflectivities were sensitive to particle type. Varying the riming on the aggregate and graupel particles resulted in larger than 10 dB differences in reflectivities. The in-situ and radar observations imply the occurrence of aggregation, size sorting and lofting particles.

Radiological Degradation of Tetraoctyl Diglycolamide in n-Alkyl Solvents: Influence of Solvent Ionization Potential

Reprocessing of used nuclear fuel reduces the requirements for long-term storage repositories. Cost-efficient processes depend on knowledge of radiation effects, but gaps occur in understanding how radiation results in the degradation of fuel separation molecules. This project investigates the influence of different n-alkyl solvents on the radiolytic fragmentation behavior of N,N,N',N'-Tetraoctyl-3-oxapentane-1,5-diamide (TODGA), a promising ligand for extraction of the lanthanides and minor actinides from dissolved nuclear fuel. Findings from this work suggest a linkage between the ionization potential of the solvent and the degradation products observed in the resulting mass spectrum.

Spatiotemporal Pattern Recognition in the PMU Signals in the WECC system

Phasor measurement unit (PMU) data has been used by multiple power system applications, including state estimation, post event analysis, oscillation detection, model validation, and many others. Still, due to its big data nature and availability to general research institutions, comprehensive understanding of the spatiotemporal patterns and underlying mechanisms are incomplete. This study applies a set of signal processing and machine learning approaches aiming at deciphering the characteristic behaviors of multiple phasor measurement units (PMUs) attributes (e.g., voltage, frequency, rate of change of frequency, phase angle), including their auto-correlation, cross-dependence, similarities and discrepancies across units and temporal scales, and distributions of anomalies and their linkages to potential external factors such as weather events. Data analytics are applied to PMUs from the U.S. Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) system. The PMU measurements, recorded events, outages, and weather extremes are all from real world datasets. The findings from the study and mechanistic understanding of the PMU dynamics help provide guidance on system control or preventing blackouts. The derived metrics can be directly used for adjusting or filtering simulated PMU data used for advanced algorithm development.

Data Driven Analysis for Modernization Program Management

NNSA is responsible for managing national nuclear security missions: ensuring a safe, secure, and reliable nuclear deterrent; supplying nuclear fuel to the Navy; and supporting the nation’s nuclear nonproliferation efforts. However, over half of NNSA’s facilities are more than 40 years old, and roughly one-third date back to the Manhattan Project. To execute its critical nuclear security missions, NNSA is making large investments to modernize its nuclear production capabilities. This ramp up represents NNSA’s largest modernization effort since the Cold War. Given the scale of these efforts, NNSA’s Office of Secondary Stage Production Modernization has implemented data driven techniques to prioritize investments and inform strategic decision making. NNSA, with support from its site managing contractors, has developed and implemented an integrated schedule and risk management system to address the issues and limitations with the traditional approach. The multi-year integrated schedules are key to identifying program linkages and managing large portfolios comprised of many different projects and efforts. In conjunction with the integrated schedule, a new program risk management system has also been developed and implemented, which manages program risks and opportunities, along with specific mitigation strategies to reduce or eliminate the risks per timelines that are tracked in the integrated schedule. This paper is supplemented with a follow-on presentation on effective management of program material and throughput modeling.
