Cardiovascular dynamics during the initial period of head-down tilt

The cardiovascular response to 1 h of 60-deg head-down tilt was studied in 12 male subjects, ages 30-39 years, to simulate the early effects of weightlessness. Fluid shifts, hemodynamic variables, and indices of myocardial contractility were evaluated by utilizing electrocardiography, systolic time intervals, impedance cardiography, sphygmomanometry, and measurement of calf circumference. Most cardiovascular variables remained stable throughout the initial 30 min of the protocol, even though translocation of fluid from the legs to the thorax commenced immediately with the onset of head-down tilt. In contrast, minutes 30-60 were characterized by reduced stroke volume, cardiac output, mean stroke ejection rate, and Heather index concomitant with an elevation in mean arterial pressure. Intrathoracic fluid volume continued to increase, while leg volume continued to decrease. This latter physiological response suggests intrathoracic sequestration of fluid volume; blood was apparently redistributed to the pulmonary circulation rather than being retained in the great veins.

Some insights into the stability of difference approximations for hyperbolic initial-boundary-value problems

This paper states a conjecture which relates Lax-Richmyer stability to the algebraic test of the stability theory of Gustafsson, Kreiss, and Sundstrom (1972), developed for difference approximations to initial boundary value problems where the matrix size J increases linearly with n as n goes to infinity. This corresponds to mesh refinement in both space and time for t = n x delta t = constant.

An experimental study of closure behavior of naturally initiated small cracks

Small cracks were initiated on the edges of 2024-T3 aluminum specimens by fatigue loading with various R-ratios. The crack opening displacement was then measured with a laser based interferometric technique and used to determine the operating load ratio. This ratio decreased with increasing distance from the tip. However, it remained essentially constant as the crack grew if a constant measuring system was used.

STRUTEX: A prototype knowledge-based system for initially configuring a structure to support point loads in two dimensions

The purpose of this research effort is to investigate the benefits that might be derived from applying artificial intelligence tools in the area of conceptual design. Therefore, the emphasis is on the artificial intelligence aspects of conceptual design rather than structural and optimization aspects. A prototype knowledge-based system, called STRUTEX, was developed to initially configure a structure to support point loads in two dimensions. This system combines numerical and symbolic processing by the computer with interactive problem solving aided by the vision of the user by integrating a knowledge base interface and inference engine, a data base interface, and graphics while keeping the knowledge base and data base files separate. The system writes a file which can be input into a structural synthesis system, which combines structural analysis and optimization.

Characterization of fatigue crack initiation and propagation in Ti-6Al-4V with electrical potential drop technique

Electrical potential methods have been used in the past primarily to monitor crack length in long crack specimens subjected to fatigue loading. An attempt was made to develop test procedures for monitoring the fatigue crack initiation and the growth of short fatigue cracks in a turbine disk alloy with the electrical potential drop technique (EPDT). In addition, the EPDT was also applied to monitor the fatigue crack growth in long crack specimens of the same alloy. The resolution of the EPDT for different specimen geometries was determined. Factors influencing the EPDT are identified and the applicability of EPDT in implementing damage tolerant design concepts for turbine disk materials is discussed. The experimental procedure adopted and the results obtained is discussed. No substantial differences were observed between the fatigue crack growth data of short and long crack specimens.

Development and verification of NASA Standard Initiator-2 (NSI-2): Appendix

This is the Appendix to the Final Report on the results of verification testing on NASA Contract NAS9-17249. The test results are presented graphically in the Appendix. The Final Report is a brief discussion of design elements, test results, and a discussion of the latter. The contract was awarded for development and demonstration of design modifications to the NASA Standard Initiator-1 (NSI-1), resulting in the development of NSI-2. The intent of the project was to develop and prove the following design features: (1) Protection from premature detonation due to electrostatic potential by means other than a spark gap; (2) Development of an integral insulated charge cup for use with a zirconium/potassium perchlorate type mixture; (3) Improved cost and reliability figures by the use of a deposited bridge; and (4) Elimination of dudding as a result of the pyrotechnic shock effect, the movement of the primer composition away from the bridge circuit.

Enabling bold mission initiatives - NASA space power technology

The critical technology requirements of space power for future NASA missions such as humans on Mars and the lunar base mission are reviewed, and ongoing research and technology efforts are discussed. Activities of the new Civil Space Technology Initiative will focus on photovoltaic and solar dynamic conversion system technologies with relevant electrical and thermal energy storage devices. Advanced solar array systems with specific powers of 300 W/kg are projected. The electrochemical energy storage goal is to improve the energy density by a factor of five up to 100 W h/kg, and the solar dynamic technology goal is to develop power systems with a specific power of 20 W/kg.

Effect of component compression on the initial performance of an IPV nickel-hydrogen cell

An experimental method was developed for evaluating the effect of component compression on the charge and discharge voltage characteristics of a 3 1/2 in. diameter boiler plate cell. A standard boiler plate pressure vessel was modified by the addition of a mechanical feedthrough on the bottom of the vessel which permitted different compressions to be applied to the components without disturbing the integrity of the stack. Compression loadings from 0.94 to 27.4 psi were applied by suspending weights from the feedthrough rod. Cell voltages were measured for 0.96-C, 55-min charge and for 1.37-C, 35-min and 2-C, 24-min discharges. An initial change in voltage performance on both charge and discharge as the loading increased was attributed to seating of the components. Subsequent variation of the compression from 2.97 to 27.4 psi caused only minor changes in either the charge or the discharge voltages. Several one month open-circuit voltage stands and 1100 cycles under LEO conditions at the maximum loading have produced no change in performance.

A no hair theorem and the problem of initial conditions

It is shown that under very general conditions, any inhomogeneous cosmological model with a positive cosmological constant that can be described in a synchronous reference system will tend asymptotically in time towards the de Sitter solution. This renders the problem of initial conditions less severe.

Lightning initiation on aircraft in thunderstorms

The physical model of the initiation of lightning flashes by aircraft in thunderstorms is presented. The model is based on the 'bi-directional uncharged leader' concept by Kasemir, and is verified with airborne data from lightning strikes to an instrumented airplane (NASA F-106B and FAA CV-580). The characteristics of electromagnetic processes during lightning attachment are identified by comparison with those studied in natural flashes, those triggered by wire trailing rockets, and laboratory discharges. A triggered flash starts with either a negative corona or a positive leader that depends on the ambient electric field vector and the airplane form factor. The positive leader with continuous current that increases with time is followed in a few milliseconds by the negative stepped leader with current pulses of a few kA. The two leaders develop in space simultaneously and bi-directionally from the oppositely charged extremities of the airplane.

Initial estimates of Venus winds from ground-based radio tracking of the Vega balloons

A global array of 20 radio observatories was used to measure the three-dimensional position and velocity of the two meteorological balloons that were injected into the equatorial region of the Venus atmosphere by the Vega spacecraft. Initial analysis of only radial velocities indicates that each balloon was blown westward about 11,500 kilometers (8000 kilometers on the night side) by zonal winds with a mean speed of about 70 meters per second. Excursions of the data from a model of constant zonal velocity are generally less than 3-meters per second; however, a much larger variation is evident near the end of the flight of the second balloon. Consistent systematic trends in the residual for both balloons indicate the possibility of a solar-fixed atmospheric feature.

Large deflection random response of cross-ply laminated plates with elastically restrained edges and initial imperfections

The large deflection random response of symmetrically laminated cross-ply rectangular thin plates subjected to random excitation is studied. The out-of-plane boundary conditions are such that all the edges are rigidly supported against translation, but elastically restrained against rotation. The plate is also assumed to have a small initial imperfection. The assumed membrane boundary conditions are such that all the edges are free from normal and tangential forces in the plane of the plate. Mean-square deflections and mean-square strains are determined for a three-layered cross-ply laminate.

Closure measurements of naturally initiating small cracks

The initiation and growth of cracks in smooth 2024-T3 aluminum specimens have been investigated using acetate replicas. Crack opening displacements were measured as a function of load at several positions along the crack as it grew across the thickness of the specimen and became a through-the-thickness crack of a few millimeters in length. Tests run for R-ratios of 0.5, 0.0 and -1.0 showed that closure loads were well predicted by Newman's (1984) model. It is noted that small cracks grow slightly faster than would be predicted by long-crack data, and it is suggested that effects other than plasticity-induced closure must be taken into account.

Imaging extreme ultraviolet spectrometer employing a single toroidal diffraction grating - The initial evaluation

The design and test results of a high-efficiency EUV imaging spectrometer employing a concave toroidal grating which is illuminated at normal incidence in a Rowland circle mounting and has only one reflecting surface are discussed. Photographic tests and initial photoelectric tests with a two-dimensional pulse-counting detector system demonstrate the excellent image quality of the grating at wavelengths near 600 A. Applications of the spectrometer for the study of nonsolar objects and solar regions (including the chromosphere, transition region, and corona) are considered.

Issues, concerns, and initial implementation results for space based telerobotic control

Telerobotic control for space based assembly and servicing tasks presents many problems in system design. Traditional force reflection teleoperation schemes are not well suited to this application, and the approaches to compliance control via computer algorithms have yet to see significant testing and comparison. These observations are discussed in detail, as well as the concerns they raise for imminent design and testing of space robotic systems. As an example of the detailed technical work yet to be done before such systems can be specified, a particular approach to providing manipulator compliance is examined experimentally and through modeling and analysis. This yields some initial insight into the limitations and design trade-offs for this class of manipulator control schemes. Implications of this investigation for space based telerobots are discussed in detail.
