Complete development of LAROMance-type surrogate models for Zircaloy, as well as initial integration and testing in MOOSE, which addresses industry needs for licensing advanced LWR fuels

This milestone report details the progress in the constitutive surrogate modeling framework for Zircaloy’s mechanical behavior under extreme conditions, within the NEAMS program throughout the U.S. fiscal year 2024 (FY24). The presented work expands on the spectral based mechanical solver and the mechanistic material model for Zircaloy, which were introduced in the NEAMS program during FY22 and detailed in the previous fiscal year (FY23). As part of the NEAMS program, the current effort described in this report focused on the development of a novel viscplastic (creep) surrogate for the mechanistic, polycrystal-based model. To this end, the work was subdivided into two interdependent components related to the necessary improvements to the LApx constitutive model and algorithm and, to the development and use of a surrogate model.

Planning Roadmap for DER Integration in India: Industry Best Practices and Resource Guide

Ensuring safe, reliable, cost-effective DER integration at scale requires holistic planning, broad stakeholder engagement, and should address key development areas such as standards adoption, equipment testing and certification, interoperability and cybersecurity, interconnection procedures, and advanced forecasting and DER management. Each of these areas currently represent significant challenges for utilities, regulators, OEMs, developers, and even consumers worldwide. India has already seen significant growth of DERs and has announced targets for substantial growth yet to come, with the potential for DERs to make up a non-negligible portion of the country's overall generation capacity. As such, it is of critical importance that Indian stakeholders consider the potential impacts of wide-spread adoption of DERs and take preemptive action related to the five development areas listed here, among others. India should consider strategies including the adoption of key DER standards related to interconnection, testing, and cybersecurity; enabling effective and secure communication channels for DER interoperability; testing and certifying DER equipment in accredited testing laboratories; building robust, streamlined interconnection procedures; and revamping legacy system planning structures to incorporate DERs in a holistic planning framework.

FY24 Progress Report on Viscosity and Thermal Conductivity Measurements of Nuclear Industry Relevant Chloride Salts: An Experimental and Computational Study

As presented in this report, experimental and computational techniques were performed to assess the viscosity and thermal conductivity of key alkali and actinide chloride mixtures for molten salt reactor developers. These mixtures were pure LiCl, NaCl-KCl, LiCl-NaCl, LiCl-KCl, LiCl-NaCl-KCl, and NaCl-UCl 3 . Experimental measurements of viscosity were performed with a rolling ball viscometer, whereas experimental measurements of thermal conductivity were performed with a variable gap apparatus. Additional benchmarking work was performed using both property measurement systems to prepare for x-ray radiography in stainless-steel crucibles for viscosity and to ensure that calibration methods were accurate for thermal conductivity before assessing the NaCl-UCl 3 system. Validation data for the NaCl-UCl 3 in literature are minimal. Details on the calibration methods, salt measurement processes, and sources of error and uncertainty are discussed in detail for both property measurements. The computational methods described herein involved ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations using CP2K. The calculations were performed for the LiCl-KCl-NaCl and NaCl-UCl 3 systems. These calculations not only provided thermophysical property estimations for comparison to experimental data, but they also allowed for the determination of diffusion coefficients, coordination numbers, and radial distribution functions to provide insight into ion mobility and local coordination environments, which is linked to macroscopic property trends.

Continuous integration data-driven platform of industrial-scale subsurface storage for real-time analytics

This project helped address the growing need for efficient and scalable models to support geological carbon and energy storage, which are crucial for achieving net-zero emissions. Traditionally accurate high-fidelity numerical models have been used to simulate relevant storage processes under a handful of processes, however such models are computationally demanding, making uncertainty quantification impractical. Consequently, we first developed a machine learning framework, based on Graph Neural Operators (GNOs), to improving the accuracy of model predictions for a fixed computational budget. We then developed an Ensemble of Improved Neural Operators (ENO), which uses bagging and Monte Carlo dropout techniques, to further improve prediction accuracy. Lastly, we developed the way to explain progressive transfer learning methods to reduce the amount of training data and computational cost of training (i.e., reduce trainable parameters) when using our models for multiple storage sites. Our numerical investigation, which used real-world case studies, demonstrated that our framework can significantly improve the safety and efficiency of geological storage operations, with potential applications in other domains such as geothermal reservoirs and climate modeling.

Coal Enhanced PEEK Filament Production for Additive Manufacturing in Industrial Services

The project (Award DE-FE0032146), led by Baker Hughes in collaboration with the University of Wyoming, aims to develop composite PEEK (Polyether-ether-ketone) materials enhanced using coal-derived graphene-based additives suitable for additive manufacturing (3D printing). Coal char (CC), graphene oxide (GO), and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), derived from Powder River Basin (PRB) coal, were successfully integrated into commercial PEEK feedstock. The composite PEEK materials demonstrated tensile and flexural strengths and modulus, Shore hardness, and thermal properties similar to unfilled PEEK. Dielectric strength of 0.5% GO/PEEK is twice that of unfilled PEEK. However, tensile elongation and Izod impact toughness of the composite materials are lower than unfilled PEEK. The 10% CC/PEEK material also shows good recyclability albeit with slightly increased glass transition and cold crystallization temperatures. Filaments of the composite PEEK materials were fabricated using a Filabot system. 3D printing of the composite PEEK initially encountered feeding stoppage caused by the non-uniform diameter of the filament, which was resolved by reducing the nominal diameter from 1.75 to 1.65 mm. The printability of the composite PEEK filaments is limited in geometry and build time, driven by differences in base PEEK feedstock from the commercial PEEK filament at printing conditions. Prototype part printed using the composite filaments shows inconsistent bead width and bead interruption resulting in porosity. Preliminary process and economic evaluation using PRB coal char estimates the cost of GO to be $0.5/lb. Considering the small fraction expected in the composite PEEK, the GO cost is several orders of magnitude lower than the commercial PEEK filament. It is recommended that the printability of composite PEEK filaments to be improved by optimizing the composite PEEK material at the printing conditions and reducing the variations in filament extrusion. Also important is to identify the mechanisms of how coal-derived additives affect the composite PEEK performance and printing characteristics to allow customized material design and processing for target performance.

LLGOMAX: Enhancing Industry-Standard Tools for AC Optimal Unit Commitment (CRADA Final Report)

This was a collaborative effort between Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC ("LLNS"), as manager and operator of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory ("LLNL") and ECCO International Inc. ("Participant"). The team designed and implemented a new approach for the Security-Constrained Alternating-Current Unit Commitment (SCACUC) problem. The SCACUC problem is a mathematical optimization problem that decides which generating units should be online and how much power should be produced (and consumed) at each point of the power grid. The decisions are made so as to minimize the total cost of supplying electricity while respecting technical constraints of the power grid, both under normal and emergency conditions. The team developed a solution for SCACUC as specified in the ARPA-E Grid Optimization Competition (GOC) Challenge 3, which put forth a forward-looking version of the problem, which many features not present in today’s electricity market specifications for SCACUC.
