Self-correcting incremental approach in nonlinear structural mechanics.

A self-correcting, incremental-solution procedure has been developed which seems to be promising in solving geometrically highly nonlinear problems. The procedure is also applicable to systems with many degrees of freedom where the bandwidth of the stiffness matrix is large compared with the narrow bandwidth for the shell of revolution.

Thin wing corrections for phase-change heat-transfer data.

Since no methods are available for determining the magnitude of the errors incurred when the semiinfinite slab assumption is violated, a computer program was developed to calculate the heat-transfer coefficients to both sides of a finite, one-dimensional slab subject to the boundary conditions ascribed to the phase-change coating technique. The results have been correlated in the form of correction factors to the semiinfinite slab solutions in terms of parameters normally used with the technique.

Estimating trajectory correction requirements for the Outer Planets Grand Tour missions.

The estimation of trajectory correction requirements for the Outer Planets Grand Tour (OPGT) missions poses a unique and many-faceted problem for the systems analyst. In this paper the navigation concept for the OPGT is developed and illustrated. The limiting accuracies and performance of the combined radio/onboard optical system are examined. The combined orbit determination system is characterized by its accuracy and by its system risks. Such considerations are included with the statistical combination of maneuver estimates to produce preliminary delta V estimates for the planned OPGT missions.

Error correction in adders using systematic subcodes.

A generalized theory is presented for the construction of a systematic subcode for a given AN code in such a way that error control properties of the AN code are preserved in this new code. The 'systematic weight' and 'systematic distance' functions in this new code depend not only on its number representation system but also on its addition structure. Finally, to illustrate this theory, a simple error-correcting adder organization using a systematic subcode of 29 N code is sketched in some detail.

A modification of the Avrett-Krook temperature-correction procedure.

In the course of developing a computer program for blanketed model stellar atmospheres, it was found that near the surface the Avrett-Krook temperature correction procedure (1963) has poor convergence properties. The problem is most apparent when frequencies shortward of the Lyman discontinuity are included. Slightly different assumptions have been made to improve the convergence.

The effects of recent opacity corrections on a main-sequence stellar model of 2.25 solar masses.

Comparison of models calculated with the opacities of Carson et al. (1968) and the electron-scattering corrections of Watson with models based on the opacities of Cox et al. (1965). The models have a mass of 2.25 solar masses and a chemical composition with X = 0.596 and Z = 0.02. With the adopted formulas representing the new opacities, it is found that the percentage changes with respect to the model based on the opacities of Cox et al. can be as large as +11 for the stellar radius, -42 for the luminosity, -15 for the effective temperature, -30 for the mass of the convective core, -8 for the central pressure, and -4 for both the central density and the central temperature.

An approximation to midcourse correction direction errors.

A new approximation to the components of midcourse correction direction errors is described that is more accurate than a previously used approximation. The calculation effort involved is much less than that for numerical integration. A comparison of numerical integration results with those of the new approximation is presented in a diagram.

Sampling command generator corrects for noise and dropouts in recorded data

Generator measures period between zero crossings of reference signal and accepts as correct timing points only those zero crossings which occur acceptably close to nominal time predicted from last accepted command. Unidirectional crossover points are used exclusively so errors from analog nonsymmetry of crossover detector are avoided.

Self-consistent Pauli corrections in Brueckner-Hartree-Fock calculations

A scheme is introduced which makes it feasible to make completely self-consistent Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (BHF) and renormalized BHF calculations for spherical, closed-shell and axially-symmetric deformed nuclei. The usual requirement or orbital self-consistency has been imposed, as well as self-consistency in the starting energies and occupation probabilities. Previously, only approximate forms were used for the Pauli operator. This approximation is removed and a method for making the necessary Pauli corrections to the reaction matrix during the approach to self-consistency is presented. A discussion of the symmetries which reduce the problem to one of manageable proportions is included.

Tracking and data system support for the Pioneer project. Volume 1: Pioneer 10-prelaunch planning through second trajectory correction, 4 December 1969 - 1 April 1972

The tracking and data system support of the launch, near-earth, and deep space phases of the Pioneer 10 mission, which sent a Pioneer spacecraft into a flyby of Jupiter that would eventually allow the spacecraft to escape the solar system is discussed. The support through the spacecraft's second trajectory correction is reported. During this period, scientific instruments aboard the spacecraft registered information relative to interplanetary particles and fields, and radiometric data generated by the network continued to improve knowledge of the celestial mechanics of the solar system. In addition to network support activity detail, network performance and special support activities are covered.
