A thirty-six element array antenna system

Thirty-six element square array, with mutual coupling between crossed slots for array elements, is used as an electronically scanned tracking antenna. The system does not require the movement of the antenna or the presence of an operator.

Flexible, low-cost silicon solar cell arrays

Silicon solar cell arrays are pressure-bonded to flexible backing and protected by fluorinated ethylene propylene cover in one mechanized operation. Arrays packaged by this method are flexible, lightweight, insulated, breakage resistant and less expensive.

Development of lightweight aluminum hollowcore solar cell array technology

A baseline configuration for a three section folding array, with retraction capability, was developed which would utilize electroformed aluminum hollowcore substrates and beryllium frames. The three section array was not fabricated because of difficulties with impurities in the aluminum electroforming bath. A procedure was developed for etching the copper mandrel from virtually any size of aluminum hollowcore panel in approximately one hour. Procedures were developed for analyzing the content of peroxide, water, total aluminum, and lithium-aluminum-hydride in an aluminum electroforming solution.

The Apollo 11 laser ranging retro-reflector array

The laser ranging retro-reflector now deployed at Tranquility Base consists of an array assembly housing 100 fused-silica retro-reflectors mounted on a pallet-aiming assembly resting on the lunar surface. The array assembly serves to hold, optically align, and thermally isolate the retro-reflectors to preserve optimum optical performance at all operating temperatures in the expected range from -300 to 250 F.

Solar array cost reduction

A brief description is given of the cost of solar power systems over the last decade and means by which cost reductions may be achieved in the future. Costs were broken down into nonrecurring and recurring costs for solar array, battery, and power conditioning. Correlation of costs with power were poor; however, costs correlated reasonably well with the array area.

Integrated dynamic analysis simulation of space stations with controllable solar arrays (supplemental data and analyses)

Space station and solar array data and the analyses which were performed in support of the integrated dynamic analysis study. The analysis methods and the formulated digital simulation were developed. Control systems for space station altitude control and solar array orientation control include generic type control systems. These systems have been digitally coded and included in the simulation.

Phase control circuits using frequency multiplications for phased array antennas

A phase control coupling circuit for use with a phased array antenna is described. The coupling circuit includes a combining circuit which is coupled to a transmission line, a frequency multiplier circuit which is coupled to the combining circuit, and a recombining circuit which is coupled between the frequency multiplier circuit and phased array antenna elements. In a doubler embodiment, the frequency multiplier circuit comprises frequency doublers and the combining and recombining circuits comprise four-port hybrid power dividers. In a generalized embodiment, the multiplier circuit comprises frequency multiplier elements which multiply to the Nth power, the combining circuit comprises four-part hybrid power dividers, and the recombinding circuit comprises summing circuits.

Calculation of retroreflector array transfer functions

Computer programs have been developed for calculating the transfer function of a retroreflector array. The transfer functions provide range corrections and effective reflecting areas for the retroreflector arrays carried by satellites now in orbit. This information can be used to estimate laser echo signal strengths and to correct laser range measurements in order to obtain the range to the center of mass of the satellite. The values are tabulated for various angles of incidence of the laser beam with respect to the symmetry axis of the satellite. Transfer functions have been computed for the following satellites: BE-B, BE-C, Geos 1, D1C, D1D, Geos 2, Peole, and Geos C.

Airborne electronically steerable phased array

The results are presented of the second stage of a program for the design and development of a phased array capable of simultaneous and separate transmission and reception of radio frequency signals at S-band frequencies. The design goals of this stage were the development of three major areas of interest required for the final prototype model. These areas are the construction and testing of the low-weight, full-scale 128-element array of antenna elements, the development of the RF manifold feed system, and the construction and testing of a working module containing diplexer and transmit and receive circuits.

Flexible solar-array mechanism

One of the key elements of the flexible rolled-up solar array system is a mechanism to deploy, retract, and store the flexible solar-cell arrays. The selection of components, the design of the mechanism assembly, and the tests that were performed are discussed. During 6 months in orbit, all mission objectives were satisfied, and inflight performance has shown good correlation with preflight analyses and tests.

A 928 sq m (10000 sq ft) solar array

As the power requirements for space vehicles increases, the area of solar arrays that convert solar energy to usable electrical power increases. The requirements for a 928 sq m (10,000 sq ft) array, its design, and a full-scale demonstration of one quadrant (232 sq m (2500 sq ft)) deployed in a one-g field are described.

Adaptive ground implemented phase array

The simulation of an adaptive ground implemented phased array of five antenna elements is reported for a very high frequency system design that is tolerant to the radio frequency interference environment encountered by a tracking data relay satellite. Signals originating from satellites are received by the VHF ring array and both horizontal and vertical polarizations from each of the five elements are multiplexed and transmitted down to ground station. A panel on the transmitting end of the simulation chamber contains up to 10 S-band RFI sources along with the desired signal to simulate the dynamic relationship between user and TDRS. The 10 input channels are summed, and desired and interference signals are separated and corrected until the resultant sum signal-to-interference ratio is maximized. Testing performed with this simulation equipment demonstrates good correlation between predicted and actual results.

Thermoelastic analysis of solar cell arrays and their material properties

A thermoelastic stress analysis procedure is reported for predicting the thermally induced stresses and failures in silicon solar cell arrays. A prerequisite for the analysis is the characterization of the temperature-dependent thermal and mechanical properties of the solar cell materials. Extensive material property testing was carried out in the temperature range -200 to +200 C for the filter glass, P- and N-type silicon, interconnector metals, solder, and several candidate silicone rubber adhesives. The analysis procedure is applied to several solar cell array design configurations. Results of the analysis indicate the optimum design configuration, with respect to compatible materials, effect of the solder coating, and effect of the interconnector geometry. Good agreement was found between results of the analysis and the test program.
