Digital set point control of nonlinear stochastic systems

A technique for digital control of nonlinear stochastic plants is presented. The development achieves a practical digital algorithm with which the closed-loop system behaves in a classical Type I manner even with gross nonlinearities in the plant structure and low signal-to-noise power ratios. The design procedure is explained in detail and illustrated by an example whose simulated responses testify to the practicality of the approach.

A set of satellite experiments for studying the magnetosphere-ionosphere communications

Magnetospheric substorms are one of the basic problems in the physics of near earth space. They appear as magnetic and ionospheric perturbations, disturbances in radio communication, polar auroras and electromagnetic radiation in different frequency ranges. These phenomena were studied from single satellites. However, it is impossible to study these phenomena adequately without simultaneous measurements from at least two different positions with identical instruments. A suitable program can be developed based on the Interkosmos work using new achievements in electronics.

From Serenity to Langemak - A regional chemical setting for Mare Crisium

The chemistry of the region surrounding Mare Crisium is described using improved Al/Si and Mg/Si intensity ratios derived from Apollo 15 X-ray fluorescence measurements. Mg/Si ratios are shown to increase from 0.6 in the region east of Mare Smythii to 1.0 in western Mare Serenitatis, while Al/Si ratios show sharp decreases in all mare areas. It is concluded that the terra (nonmare) material has a uniform Al/Si ratio, hence plagioclase content, and increases in the Mg/Si ratio in terra material imply similar increases of Mg in the pyroxenes and olivines of this material. The observed diversity of terra soils can be explained by an originally chemically diverse region not homogenized by heavy bombardment, or by volcanism subsequent to bombardment. Maria Crisium, Serenitatis and Smythii are found to be filled with low albedo materials which have a wide range of Mg/Si values, with small and apparently consistent differences in Al/Si ratio.

A fast, space-efficient average-case algorithm for the 'Greedy' Triangulation of a point set, and a proof that the Greedy Triangulation is not approximately optimal

The paper addresses the problem of how to find the Greedy Triangulation (GT) efficiently in the average case. It is noted that the problem is open whether there exists an efficient approximation algorithm to the Optimum Triangulation. It is first shown how in the worst case, the GT may be obtained in time O(n to the 3) and space O(n). Attention is then given to how the algorithm may be slightly modified to produce a time O(n to the 2), space O(n) solution in the average case. Finally, it is mentioned that Gilbert has found a worst case solution using totally different techniques that require space O(n to the 2) and time O(n to the 2 log n).

The winds of the comparison data set for the Seasat Gulf of Alaska Experiment

Ship and data buoy winds used for comparison in the validation of Seasat-derived winds are described in terms of the time series of hourly wind observations from the buoys and in terms of the techniques used to produce 20- and 30-min average winds from the ships. Attention is given to the comparison data, the synoptic scale wind, turbulence concepts, the data buoy winds, Ocean Weather Station PAPA, the oceanographer data, and the results from Ocean Station PAPA Ship Quadra and from the oceanographer. Sources of scatter in the comparison data are reviewed.

Super-Alfvenic particle streaming in astrophysical settings

The pitch angle scattering of relativistic particles by self-generated hydromagnetic waves is discussed. It is shown that in a hot background plasma, because of the resonant damping of short wavelength waves by thermal protons, cosmic rays need not slow down to a mean streaming speed which is of order the Alfven speed. The effects of a high cosmic ray energy density upon the destabilized wave model are also discussed. Recent work indicates that when the cosmic ray energy density is on the order of or exceeds the energy density in the ambient magnetic field, the velocity of the amplified waves is significantly greater than the Alfven speed. These effects have important implications for recent cosmic ray acceleration models and are important for studies of particle propagation in many astrophysical plasmas.

Optimal tooth numbers for compact standard spur gear sets

The design of a standard gear mesh is treated with the objective of minimizing the gear size for a given ratio, pinion torque, and allowable tooth strength. Scoring, pitting fatigue, bending fatigue, and the kinematic limits of contact ratio and interference are considered. A design space is defined in terms of the number of teeth on the pinion and the diametral pitch. This space is then combined with the objective function of minimum center distance to obtain an optimal design region. This region defines the number of pinion teeth for the most compact design. The number is a function of the gear ratio only. A design example illustrating this procedure is also given.

A consistent set of trial functions for conical shells

A consistent approach is developed for the determination of trial functions for a class of shells of revolution. The trial functions satisfy the in-plane and out-of-plane boundary conditions at the shell ends and include the effects of tangential inertia. The resulting expressions converge rapidly for the problem of linear free vibration
