Analysis of Interlaminar Damage in Refractory Composites by In-Situ Micro-X-Ray Computed Tomography

Refractory composites are relevant for hot-structure applications on re-entry vehicles. To develop optimized high-performance hot structures, accurate material property data is required. Material properties that often limit design in two-dimensional (2-D) composites are interlaminar strengths. A better understanding of the failure mechanisms for interlaminar shear (ILS), interlaminar tension (ILT), and curved-beam interlaminar tension (CB-ILT) tests can provide insight on improving the design and fabrication of refractory composites. In-situ tests were performed to capture the progressive failure in American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) sized ILS (ASTM D3846), ILT (ASTM D7291), and CB-ILT (ASTM D6415) specimens. The present study investigates the change in material behavior by examining the macro porosity change in in-situ ILS tests, the mesoscale and inter-ply porosity changes in flatwise in-situ ILT tests and the change in per-ply delamination in in-situ CB-ILT tests.

X-Ray Micro- and Nano-Tomography Analysis of Bennu Samples: A Preliminary Report

X-ray tomography (XCT) is an effective technique for obtaining the 3D structures of returned samples. XCT using synchrotron radiation provides high-resolution CT images with quantitative information. The XCT systems at SPring-8, an SR facility in Japan, have been used to analyze samples returned from the asteroids Itokawa and Ryugu. In this study, we plan to apply SR-XCT to samples returned from the asteroid Bennu.

Thermally Conductive Melt-Processable Polyimide HBN Micro-Composites for High Temperature Electrical Insulation Applications

Thermoplastic polymers exhibit excellent dielectric properties and manufacturing robustness. These properties mark thermoplastics as competitive material candidates for electrical insulation applications. However, the high-temperature performance of most thermoplastics is insufficient to meet the electrical wiring requirements for next-generation air and space transportation engineering designs, with continuous operation temperature requirements of up to 200 °C among other design requirements. Furthermore, the low thermal conductivity (κ) of polymers as a material class leads to heat trapping within wires which can amplify thermal stresses. As a result, there is a need to investigate candidate thermoplastic systems for their high temperature, dielectric, and κ performance.

A Concept of Precise VLBI/GNSS Ties with Micro-VLBI

We present here a concept of measuring local ties between collocated GNSS and VLBI stations using the microwave technique that effectively transforms a GNSS receiver to an element of a VLBI network. This is achieved by modifying the signal chain that allows to transfer voltage of the GNSS antenna to a digitizer via a coaxial cable. We discuss the application of this technique to local tie measurement. We have performed observations with a GNSS antenna and FD-VLBA radiotelescope and detected a strong interferometric signal from both radiogalaxies and GNSS satellites.
