Examining Constituent Redistribution in U-19Pu-10Zr Fuel as it Evolves with Local Burnup

While constituent redistribution is a known irradiation behavior in U-Pu-Zr fuel, new data have shown it is more complex than our current understanding and predictive capabilities. The size and composition of redistributed rings evolve as a function of pin composition, burnup, geometry, and irradiation temperature. In this work, we extract microstructural information from optical microscopy conducted on U-19Pu-10Zr pins (irradiated between 1.9 at. % and 11.6 at. % peak burnup). Both manual image analysis techniques and machine learning-assisted segmentation are used to quantify the thicknesses of the cladding, fuel-cladding interaction layers, and rings of fuel constituent redistribution in addition to pore distribution. These microstructural features and individual redistributed regions affect local thermomechanical properties, and identifying the relationship between burnup and constituent redistribution will improve accurate prediction of advanced reactor fuel performance.

$S^5$: Tidal Disruption in Crater 2 and Formation of Diffuse Dwarf Galaxies in the Local Group

We present results of a spectroscopic campaign around the diffuse dwarf galaxy Crater 2 (Cra2) and its tidal tails as part of the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey ($S^5$). Cra2 is a Milky Way dwarf spheroidal satellite with extremely cold kinematics, but a huge size similar to the Small Magellanic Cloud, which may be difficult to explain within collisionless cold dark matter. We identify 143 Cra2 members, of which 114 belong to the galaxy's main body and 29 are deemed part of its stellar stream. We confirm that Cra2 is dynamically cold (central velocity dispersion $2.51^{+0.33}_{-0.30}\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$) and also discover a $\approx$7$σ$ velocity gradient consistent with its tidal debris track. We separately estimate the stream velocity dispersion to be $5.74^{+0.98}_{-0.83}\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$. We develop a suite of $N$-body simulations with both cuspy and cored density profiles on a realistic Cra2 orbit to compare with $S^5$ observations. We find that the velocity dispersion ratio between Cra2 stream and galaxy ($2.30^{+0.41}_{-0.35}$) is difficult to reconcile with a cuspy halo with fiducial concentration and an initial mass predicted by standard stellar mass$-$halo mass relationships. Instead, either a cored halo with relatively small core radius or a low-concentration cuspy model can reproduce this ratio. Despite tidal mass loss, Cra2 is metal-poor ($\langle \rm[Fe/H]\rangle=-2.16\pm0.04$) compared to the stellar mass$-$metallicity relation for its luminosity. Other diffuse dwarf galaxies similar to Cra2 in the Local Group (Antlia 2 and Andromeda 19) also challenge galaxy formation models. Finally, we discuss possible formation scenarios for Cra2, including ram-pressure stripping of a gas-rich progenitor combined with tides.

Loss Analysis and Performance Optimization Pathways of 729-mV VocSi Solar Cells with Poly-Si on Locally-Etched Dielectric Passivating Contacts

In this article, the performance analysis of a 22.5% efficient polysilicon on silicon oxide (poly-Si/SiOx) passivated contact solar cells with deliberately introduced pinholes using metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE) has been performed with the help of optical analysis using Sunsolve and electrical analysis using Quokka3. The power loss is maximum due to recombination and resistive losses in the bulk (~0.76 mW/cm2 ) followed by power loss due to rear contact recombination (~0.35 mW/cm2 ). Recombination at the front surface also contributes to 0.24 mW/cm2. The effect of improving the bulk lifetime and lowering the recombination current density at the rear side on Voc, FF and efficiency has been investigated.

Local Environment of Superoxide Radical Formed on the TiO 2 Surface Produced From Ti(OiPr) 4 Exposed to H 2 O 2

A selective heterogeneous catalyst with the superoxide anion O 2 •– stable at room temperature, generated by treating Ti(OR) 4 (R=iPr, nBu) with H 2 O 2 , was previously reported and used for the oxidation of organic compounds. Furthermore, it was proposed that exceptional stability of the O 2 •– is resulted from its stabilization near Ti +4 cation on the TiO 2 surface with participation of water molecules and/or OH groups. In this article, we performed high-resolution pulsed EPR study on the O 2 •– in this catalyst with the aim to obtain quantitative information about its interactions with the surrounding molecules. Our data has shown that the O 2 •– is involved in weak hyperfine interactions with protons in the nearest environment, which do not exceed a value of 2 MHz. It corresponds to an Os…H distance of ≥ 3 Å that exclude the formation of hydrogen bonds. The analysis of possible structures of O 2 •– adsorption on TiO 2 surface taking into account our results and lack of radical mobility at room temperature previously observed in EPR spectra led us to suggest that the O 2 •– is stabilized in the form of superoxo bridge coordinated with two titanium atoms.

The nature of dynamic local order in CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 and CH 3 NH 3 PbBr 3

Hybrid organic-inorganic lead-halide perovskites (LHPs) are a class of semiconductors with remarkable properties relevant to optoelectronic applications. The structure-property-function relationship in LHPs, however, is poorly understood, leading to incomplete descriptions of optoelectronic properties and a persistent problem of device degradation due to ion migration. Here, we reveal the true structure to contain an assembly of dynamic, two-dimensional short-range structural correlations in the lead-halide octahedral sublattice, with additional correlations between organic molecules. Here, we propose that these correlations are the origin of large-amplitude halide displacements, which govern charge carrier mobility and the sharpness of the absorption edge. Correlations between organic molecules may introduce regions of transient ferroelectricity or antiferroelectricity, which increase charge carrier lifetime. Finally, the correlations introduce an ion diffusion barrier that is static on the timescale of diffusive jumps.

Local lattice distortions and dynamics in extremely overdoped superconducting YSr 2 Cu 2.75 Mo 0.25 O 7.54

A common characteristic of many “overdoped” cuprates prepared with high-pressure oxygen is T c values ≥ 50 K that often exceed that of optimally doped parent compounds, despite O stoichiometries that place the materials at the edge or outside of the conventional boundary between superconducting and normal Fermi liquid states. X-ray absorption fine-structure (XAFS) measurements at 52 K on samples of high-pressure oxygen (HPO) YSr 2 Cu 2.75 Mo 0.25 O 7.54 , T c = 84 K show that the Mo is in the (VI) valence in an unusually undistorted octahedral geometry with predominantly Mo neighbors that is consistent with its assigned substitution for Cu in the chain sites of the structure. Perturbations of the Cu environments are minimal, although the Cu X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) differs from that in other cuprates. The primary deviation from the crystal structure is therefore nanophase separation into Mo- and Cu-enriched domains. There are, however, indications that the dynamical attributes of the structure are altered relative to YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 , including a shift of the Cu-apical O two-site distribution from the chain to the plane Cu sites. Another effect that would influence T c is the possibility of multiple bands at the Fermi surface caused by the presence of the second phase and the lowering of the Fermi level.

Variable stars in Local Group galaxies – V. The fast and early evolution of the low-mass Eridanus II dSph galaxy

ABSTRACT We present a detailed study of the variable star population of Eridanus II (Eri II), an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy that lies close to the Milky Way virial radius. We analyse multi-epoch g, r, i ground-based data from Goodman and the Dark Energy Camera, plus F475W, F606W, F814W space data from the Advanced Camera for Surveys. We report the detection of 67 RR Lyrae (RRL) stars and 2 Anomalous Cepheids, most of them new discoveries. With the RRL stars, we measure the distance modulus of Eri II, μ0 = 22.84 ± 0.05 mag (D⊙ = 370 ± 9 kpc), and derive a metallicity spread of 0.3 dex (0.2 dex intrinsic). The colour distribution of the horizontal branch (HB) and the period distribution of the RRL stars can be nicely reproduced by a combination of two stellar models of [Fe/H] = (−2.62, −2.14). The overall low metallicity is consistent with the red giant branch bump location, 0.65 mag brighter than the HB. These results are in agreement with previous spectroscopic studies. The more metal-rich RRL and the RRab stars have greater central concentration than the more metal-poor RRL and the RRc stars that are mainly located outside ∼1 rh. This is similar to what is found in larger dwarf galaxies such as Sculptor, and in agreement with an outside-in galaxy formation scenario. This is remarkable in such a faint dwarf galaxy with an apparently single and extremely short (<1 Gyr) star formation burst. Finally, we have derived new and independent structural parameters for Eri II and its star cluster using our new data that are in very good agreement with previous estimates.

Mott localization in the van der Waals crystal CrI 3 : A GGA+DMFT study

Using the generalized gradient approximation plus dynamical mean-field theory (GGA+DMFT) we confirm the importance of multi-orbital dynamical correlations in determining the paramagnetic insulating state of CrI 3 . Furthermore, while the ferromagnetic phase reveals weak electronic correlation effects due to strong spin-orbital polarization, the Mott insulating state of paramagnetic CrI 3 crystal is shown to be driven by the interplay between orbital-dependent one-electron lineshape and multi-orbital electronic interactions. To probe the paramagnetic Mott insulating state we performed x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements for the two structural phases of CrI 3 . Our study is relevant to understanding the orbital-selective electronic structure reconstruction of Mott insulators and should be applicable to other van der Waals bonded materials from bulk to the ultrathin limit.
