Performance analysis of the multichannel astrometric photometer

It has been proposed that extrasolar planetary systems may be observed if perturbations in star position due to the orbit of Jupiter-type planets could be detected. To see this motion, high accuracy measurements of 0.01 milliarcsecond are required over a relatively large field of view. Techniques using a moving Ronchi grating have been proposed for this application and have been successful in ground-based lower resolution tests. The method may have application to other precision angular measurement problems. This paper explores the theoretical description of the method, considers certain of the error sources, and presents a preliminary calculation of the performance which may be achieved.

A Near-Infrared Mapping Spectrometer for investigation of Jupiter and its satellites

The Near-Infrared-Mapping Spectrometer (NIMS) is one of the science instruments in the Galileo mission, which will explore Jupiter and its satellites in the mid-1990's. The NIMS experiment will map geological units on the surfaces of the Jovian satellites and characterize their mineral content; and, for the atmosphere of Jupiter, investigate cloud properties and the spatial and temporal variability of molecular abundances. The optics are gold-coated reflective and consist of a telescope and a grating spectrometer. The balance of the instrument includes a 17-detector (silicon and indium antimonide) focal plane array, a tuning fork chopper, microprocessor-controlled electronics, and a passive radiative cooler. A wobbling secondary mirror in the telescope provides 20 pixels in one dimension of spatial scanning in a pushbroom mode with 0.5 mr x 0.5 mr instantaneous field of view. The spectral range is 0.7-5.2 microns; resolution is 0.025 micron. NIMS is the first infrared experiment to combine both spatial and spectral mapping capability in one instrument.

Photorefractive gain in GaAs under a dc electric field

This paper reports on the first observation of a photorefractive gain coefficient as high as 2.6/cm in the undoped liquid-encapsulated Czochralski-grown GaAs crystals at 1.06 microns under a dc electric field of 13 kV/cm without using the moving grating technique. The absorption coefficient of the crystals used is 1.3/cm, showing that a net gain has been achieved. This measured gain coefficient is close to the predicted theoretical value.

High resolution absorption cross-sections and band oscillator strengths of the Schumann-Runge absorption bands of isotopic oxygen, (O-18)2, at 79 K

Cross-sections of (O-18)2 at 79 K have been obtained from photoabsorption measurements at various pressures throughout the wavelength region 177.8-197.8 nm with a 6.65 m photoelectric scanning spectrometer equipped with a 2400 lines/mm grating and having an instrumental width (FWHM) of 0.0013 nm. The measured absorption cross-sections of the Schumann-Runge bands (14,0) through (2,0) are, with the exception of the (12,0) band, independent of the instrumental width. The measured cross-sections are presented graphically here and are available at wavenumber intervals of about 0.1/cm as numerical compilations stored on magnetic tape. Band oscillator strengths of those bands have been determined by direct numerical integration of the measured absolute cross-sections and are in excellent agreement with these theoretically calculated values.

Analysis and interpretation of observations of airglow at 297 nm in the Venus thermosphere

Data obtained by the Pioneer Venus Orbiter's UV spectrometer for the limb profiles near periapsis, with the instrument's grating set to a bandpass-center wavelength of 297 nm, are analyzed to identify the sources giving rise to the observed signals, which are forbidden O I 2972 A and C I 2967 A. Structure in the forbidden O I 2972 A emission profile in the lower thermosphere is explained in terms of large temperature excursions altering the quenching rate of O(1S) by CO2.

Polarization of microwave noise source radiation in the 30 GHz to 300 GHz range

Radiation spectra have been obtained in order to calculate the frequency bandwidth and polarization of three microwave noise sources. Results were obtained in the 1-10-mm wavelength region using a lamellar grating Fourier transform spectrometer and a helium-cooled bolometer detector. A secondary transmission region was found to have an input current as well as a polarization dependence, despite the directional output of the waveguide antenna.

Spectral transmissometer and radiometer - Design and initial results

A new solid-state spectral transmissometer and radiometer is described. The radiometer measures upwelling radiance, downwelling irradiance, and beam transmittance from 390 to 750 nm with channel widths of 2.35 nm. The spectrometer consists of a 256 element CCD linear array collecting light dispersed by a reflection grating in a modified Littrow configuration. The spectrometer is time and space-shared among the three signal types. The instrument has been deployed as a free-drifting buoy and in the profiling mode, with data stored internally on a magnetic bubble memory or sent up a conducting cable as desired. Power can be supplied either by a detachable external battery pack or through conducting cable. The instrument has been deployed in the oligotrophic North Pacific Central Gyre and in the eutrophic Straits of Juan de Fuca, and preliminary results for each region are discussed.

IMAPS - A high-resolution, echelle spectrograph to record far-ultraviolet spectra of stars from sounding rockets

A novel sounding rocket payload consisting of a slitless objective grating spectrograph with no transmission elements in the optical train (or detector) is described. This instrument, called the interstellar medium absorption profile spectrograph (IMAPS), is designed to provide continuous coverage over the wavelength range of 950-1150 A; it has an effective collecting area of about 4 sq cm and can record spectra of pointlike sources at a wavelength resolution of 0.004 A and with a sample interval of 0.002 A. The successful use of this instrument aboard a Black Brant rocket is described.

Soft X-ray spectrographs for solar observations

Recent advances in soft X-ray spectrometery are reviewed, with emphasis on techniques for studying the windowless region from roughly 1-100 A. Recent technological developments considered include multilayer mirrors, large-format CCD detectors which are sensitive to X-rays, position-sensitive photon counting detectors, new kinds of X-ray films, and optical systems based on gratings with nonuniform ruling spacings. Improvements in the extent and accuracy of the atomic physics data sets on which the analysis of spectroscopic observatons depend are also discussed.

Coronal activity in F-, G-, and K-type stars. III - The coronal differential emission measure distribution of Capella, Sigma-squared CrB, and Procyon

EXOSAT soft X-ray spectra of three binary systems of cool stars are analyzed: Capella (G6 III + F9 III), Sigma-squared CrB (F8 V + G1 V), and Procyon (F5 IV-V + DF). The EXOSAT transmission grating spectrometer permits the study of individual spectral lines and line complexes between 10 and 200 A with approximately 3 A resolution. First it is demonstrated that the spectra can be described reasonably well by a two-temperature model corona. Then the assumption that only two temperatures exist in the stellar coronas is relaxed and differential emission measure distributions are derived from the three spectra. The results from the multithermal modeling are consistent with those of the two-temperature models: emission from the coronas of each of the three stars is dominated by plasma in two relative narrow temperature intervals. These intervals are centered on 5 MK and 25 MK in the cases of Capella and Sigma-squared CrB, and 0.6 MK and 3 MK in the case of Procyon. The implications of the results for the structure of stellar coronas are briefly discussed.

High resolution absorption cross-sections and band oscillator strengths of the Schumann-Runge absorption bands of isotopic oxygen, (0-16)(0-18), at 79 K

Cross-sections of (0-16)(0-18) at 79 K have been obtained from photoabsorption measurements on mixtures of (0-16)2, (0-18)2, and (0-16)(0-18) at various pressures throughout the wavelength region 180.5-195.3 nm with a 6.65 m photoelectric scanning spectrometer equipped with a 2400 lines/mm grating and having an instrumental width (FWHM) of 0.0013 nm. The measured absorption cross-sections of the (0-16)(0-18) Schumann-Runge bands (11.0)-(3.0) are independent of the instrumental width. The measured cross-sections are presented graphically.

Experimental results of a high Q quasioptical reflection cavity

A quasi-optical reflection cavity intended to be used as the resonant load of a submillimeter wavelength oscillator has been designed, constructed, and tested. The resonator consists of three elements in cascade: a high Q, high finesse folded Fabry-Perot resonator, a lower Q, low finesse Fabry-Perot resonator, and a Littrow mounted diffraction grating. The resonator exhibits a Q of 6600 and 2.5 dB of loss at 63 GHz. The design can be scaled to 1 THz, where waveguide structures become impractical, to serve as the resonator for high frequency quantum well resonant tunneling device oscillators.

Halftoning method for the generation of motion stimuli

This paper describes a novel computer-graphic technique for the generation of a broad class of motion stimuli for vision research, which uses color table animation in conjunction with a single base image. Using this technique, contrast and temporal frequency can be varied with a negligible amount of computation, once a single-base image is produced. Since only two-bit planes are needed to display a single drifting grating, an eight-bit/pixel display can be used to generate four-component plaids, in which each component of the plaid has independently programmable contrast and temporal frequency. Because the contrast and temporal frequencies of the various components are mutually independent, a large number of two-dimensional stimulus motions can be produced from a single image file.

X-ray spectroscopy of the ultrasoft transient 4U 1543 - 47

The X-ray transient 4U 1543 - 47 was observed in August 1983 by the Exosat observatory near the maximum of an outburst. The X-ray spectrum was measured using a gas scintillation proportional counter (GSPC) and a transmission grating spectrometer (TGS). A broad (FWHM about 2.7 keV) line at 5.9 keV is detected in the GSPC, which is interpreted as a redshifted and broadened iron K-alpha line. The line broadening and redshift may arise from either Compton scattering in a cool plasma with small optical depth and/or from Droppler and relativistic effects in the vicinity of compact object. The spectrum below 2 keV, obtained with the TGS, shows evidence for a broad emission feature at 0.74 keV, which may be an iron L-transition complex. However, such an emission feature could be an artifact caused by an anomalously low interstellar absorption by neutral oxygen. The contimuum emission is extremely soft and is well described by an unsaturated Comptonized spectrum from very cool plasma (kT = 0.84 keV) with large scattering depth.

Optical multiple object tracking techniques

Two multichannel multiple-object tracking techniques are reviewed. In the diffraction grating technique, the input scene is picked up by a TV camera and imaged onto a liquid-crystal light valve (LCLV), and the output side of the light valve is illuminated with a suitably polarized and collimated coherent laser beam to yield a reflected beam with polarization modulated according to the intensity of the incoherent input. This reflected beam passes through a beam splitter cube and an analyzer, resulting in an intensity modulated coherent image. An array of spectrum islands containing the information of the input appears after crossing a contact screen/lens combination. In the multiple-focus hololens technique, the scene of moving objects is sent into the LCTVSLM through a camera; a collimated laser beam is incident upon the LCTV screen; a low-pass filter is inserted between the LCTVSLM and the hololens for the removal of the high order diffractions due to the grid structure of the LCTV. The feasibility of the LCTVSLM and multiple-focus hololens technique is demonstrated.

Error sources in deferred heterodyne moire deflectometry - An analytical study

The effects of the aperture size and shape of the photodetector and of the structure of the grating lines on the performance of deferred electronic heterodyne moire deflectometry are studied. It is shown that scanning of a moire fringe pattern parallel to an unshifted fringe yields periodical variations in the heterodyne phase and amplitude, which cause severe errors in the measurements.
