Studies on the bioassayable growth hormone-like activity of plasma

Evidence supporting the existence of bioassayable growth hormone-like activity in blood plasma distinct from the growth hormone measurable by radioimmunoassay and from somatomedin is presented. Tibial assays of the growth-hormone-like activity of injected, concentrated normal human and rat plasma in hypophysectomized rats reveal 200- and 50-fold activity excesses, respectively, with respect to the amount of growth hormone detected by radioimmunoassay. The origin of this bioassayable plasma hormone has been localized to the region of the pituitary, the origin of growth hormone, a distribution not followed by somatomedin C. Purification of the bioassayable agent indicates that is has a molecular weight of between 60,000 and 80,000, in contrast to that of growth hormone (20,000), and that the bioassayable activity is distinct from that of somatomedin C. Growth hormone-like activity detected in Cohn fraction IV as well as plasma activity, are found to be collectable on Dowex 50 resin, in contrast to somatomedin C and nonsuppressible insulin-like activity. The formation of bioassayable growth hormone-activity agents from radioimmunoassayable growth hormone and directly in the pituitary is suggested.

HCMM imagery for the discrimination of rock types, the detection of geothermal energy sources and the assessment of soil moisture content in western Queensland and adjacent parts of New South Wales and South Australia

The author has identified the following significant results. Day-visible and day-IR imagery of northwest Queensland show that large scale geological features like the Mitakoodi anticlinorium, which involves rocks of contrasting lithological type, can be delineated. North of Cloncurry, the contrasting lithological units of the Knapdale quartzite and bedded argillaceous limestones within the Proterozoic Corella sequence are clearly delineated in the area of the Dugald River Lode. Major structural features in the Mount Isa area are revealed on the day-visible cover. Which provides similar but less detailed information than the LANDSAT imagery. The day-IR cover provides less additional information for areas of outcropping bedrock than had been expected. Initial studies of the day-IR and night-IR cover for parts of South Australia suggest that they contain additional information on geology compared with day-visible cover.

SEASAT-A synthetic aperture radar performance

The SEASAT-A satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is presented, and its performance since it began operation in July 1978, is examined. The imaging radar system, the first to be designed as an orbital scientific instrument, was intended to generate continuous imagery over a 100-km swath at 25-m resolution from an altitude of 800 km. SAR image quality is measured in terms of resolution, the range of detectable radar backscatter, and the contrast ratio, each of which is affected by antenna, sensor, data link, and recording/processor subsystem parameters. Microdensitometer scans of output image film of actual SEASAT-A SAR data reveal a range resolution of less than 25 m, an azimuth resolution of approximately 40 m, a noise equivalent dynamic range of from 9.6 to -21 + or - 5 dB, and an image contrast ratio of 7.5 dB. SEASAT-A SAR performance is concluded to have confirmed the utility of spaceborne radar sensing.

Microdistribution of oxygen in silicon

The microdistribution of oxygen in Czochralskii-grown, p-type silicon crystals was determined by using the SEM in the EBIC mode in conjunction with spreading resistance measurements. When the conductivity remained p-type, bands of contrast were observed in the EBIC image which corresponded to maxima in resistivity. When at the oxygen concentration maxima the oxygen donor concentration exceeded the p-type dopant concentration, an inversion of the conductivity occurred. It resulted in the formation of p-n junctions in a striated configuration and the local inversion of the EBIC image contrast. By heat-treating silicon at 1000 C prior to the activation of oxygen donors, some silicon-oxygen micro-precipitates were observed in the EBIC image within the striated oxygen concentration maxima.

Variability of the solar flux in the far ultraviolet 1175-2100 A

An attempt is made to correlate available observations within the framework of a simple two-component model of the full-disk flux which divides the solar surface into quiet and active areas with a constant average contrast factor for the intensity at a particular wavelength. The expected range of variability over the solar cycle of the far UV flux is examined within the 1175-2100 A wavelength range. Two possible indices of solar variability, the calcium plage index and the Zurich sunspot number, are investigated as guides to the fraction of disk covered by active regions and the possible resulting flux variability. In addition, contrast factors I(plage)/I(quiet region) are determined for various lines and continua, and the fraction of the disk covered by plages at various times is estimated. Results are in good agreement with the L-alpha fluxes of Vidal-Madjar (1975) and the broadband observations by Hinteregger (1979), but disagree with the flux variability reported by Heath and Thekaekara (1977) over the 1700-3000 A range.

Using Nomarski Interference to Detect Microcracks in Glass

Nomarski interference-contrast microscopy has been proposed as technique for detecting, measuring, and observing Griffith microcracks in glass and glasslike substances. Would facilitate research into cause and elimination of these flaws, along with short-and long-term effects of temperature, humidity, and other conditions. Nomarski interference-contrast technique is expected to find wide use in inspection of glass and other materials.

Objective appraisal of tolerance to ventriculography with various radiocontrast media (according to electronystagmography data)

The vestibulo oculomotor reflex (nystagmus) was recorded by means of electronystagmography in 33 neurosurgical patients in dynamics prior to and after ventriculography. For contrasting the ventricular system a water soluble medium (Conrey, dimer X or Amipak) was used in 18 patients and contrast mixtures of water soluble agents in combination with Myodil emulsion in 15. It was established that after ventriculography with water soluble media the trunk vestibular reactions in all types of nystagmus grew frequently and sharply and the vestibulovegetative reactions increased markedly.

Low-visibility visual simulation with real fog

An environmental fog simulation (EFS) attachment was developed to aid in the study of natural low-visibility visual cues and subsequently used to examine the realism effect upon the aircraft simulator visual scene. A review of the basic fog equations indicated that two major factors must be accounted for in the simulation of low visibility - one due to atmospheric attenuation and one due to veiling luminance. These factors are compared systematically by (1) comparing actual measurements to those computed from the fog equations, and (2) comparing runway-visual-range-related visual-scene contrast values with the calculated values. These values are also compared with the simulated equivalent equations and with contrast measurements obtained from a current electronic fog synthesizer to help identify areas in which improvements are needed. These differences in technique, the measured values, the features of both systems, a pilot opinion survey of the EFS fog, and improvements (by combining features of both systems) that are expected to significantly increase the potential as well as flexibility for producing a very high-fidelity low-visibility visual simulation are discussed.

Numerical modeling of diffusive-convective physical vapor transport in cylindrical vertical ampoules

Diffusive-convective physical vapor transport (PVT) in cylindrical, vertical ampoules of aspect ratio (length/radius) between 0.5 and 10 was modeled numerically. The transport of a crystal forming component through an inert component that undergoes zero net transport was considered. Systems were treated in which: (1) with unequal molecular weight of the components and with temperature gradients typically employed in PVT, convective flow arises dominantly from solutal density gradients; and (2) with equal molecular weight of the components, convective flow can arise only from thermal expansion. It was found that, due to the diffusion-induced horizontal density gradients, buoyancy-driven convective flows are superimposed on the diffusive-advective fluxes without threshold. Net recirculation sets in adjacent to the growing interface, in contrast to the corresponding monocomponent situation where marginally stable convective modes fill the whole fluid space. Depending on the orientation of the main transport direction with respect to gravity, convection can either reduce or enhance the diffusion-induced radial concentration gradients. Significant enhancement of the net transport rate was found to occur only when the whole vapor space between source and growing crystal is filled by a convective recirculation roll. Solutal and thermal convection results are similar; yet for quantitative discussions, thermal and solutal Rayleigh numbers are not interchangeable in contrast to convective situations that lack net mass transport across the fluid space.

Titan's atmosphere - Temperature and dynamics

In the lower atmosphere of Titan IR brightness temperatures exhibit meridional contrast less than approximately 3 K. Seasonal variations are absent because of the large radiative time constant. In the upper stratosphere meridional contrasts are approximately 20 K, consistent with 100 m/s cyclostrophic zonal winds, and the radiative time constant is short, implying a large seasonal variation in the temperature and wind field. The absence of longitudinal thermal structure implies that zonally symmetric flows effect the meridional transport of heat. A simple model yields meridional velocities approximately 0.04 cm/s and vertical eddy viscosities approximately 1,000 sq cm/s in the lower troposphere, and meridional velocities approximately 5 cm/s in the upper stratosphere.

Investigation of multispectral remote sensing of snow cover using a solar radiation model

A solar radiation model is described which is able to calculate, for given atmospheric and topographic input conditions, the spectral distributions of the direct and diffuse components of the total irradiance incident upon a target surface. The irradiance includes both upwelling radiation backscattered toward the earth's surface and radiation reflected toward the target from other terrain surfaces. Spectral reflectance data for two dissimilar snow types are fed into the model, along with a geometric description of the topography of the snow covered terrain. These data permit the calculation of the exitance of the target over the wavelength limits of a given sensor and, hence, the apparent contrast between the two snow types for the given input conditions. The results show that the contrast between the two snow types, all other factors being constant, is greatest in the near infrared wavelengths.

Study of phenomena related to the sintering process of silicon nitride at atmospheric pressure

A procedure was perfected for the production of components used in engineering applications of silicon nitride. Particles of complex geometry that combine remarkable mechanical properties with a high density are obtained. The process developed, in contrast to the "hot pressing" method, does not use external pressures, and in contrast to the reaction bonding method, final densities close to the theoretical value are obtained.

High resolution satellite observations of mesoscale oceanography in the Tasman Sea, 1978 - 1979

Of the Nearly 1000 standard infrared photographic images received, 273 images were on computer compatible tape. It proved necessary to digitally enhance the scene contrast to cover only a select few degrees K over the photographic grey scale appropriate to the scene-specific range of sea surface temperature (SST). Some 178 images were so enhanced. Comparison with sea truth show that SST, as seen by satellite, provides a good guide to the ocean currents and eddies off East Australia, both in summer and winter. This is in contrast, particularly in summer, to SST mapped by surface survey, which usually lacks the necessary spatial resolution.

Quantitative tests for plate tectonics on Venus

Quantitative comparisons are made between the characteristics of plate tectonics on the earth and those which are possible on Venus. Considerations of the factors influencing rise height and relating the decrease in rise height to plate velocity indicate that the rate of topographic dropoff from spreading centers should be about half that on earth due to greater rock-fluid density contrast and lower temperature differential between the surface and interior. Statistical analyses of Pioneer Venus radar altimetry data and global earth elevation data is used to identify 21,000 km of ridge on Venus and 33,000 km on earth, and reveal Venus ridges to have a less well-defined mode in crest heights and a greater concavity than earth ridges. Comparison of the Venus results with the spreading rates and associated heat flow on earth reveals plate creation rates on Venus to be 0.7 sq km/year or less and indicates that not more than 15% of Venus's energy is delivered to the surface by plate tectonics, in contrast to values of 2.9 sq km a year and 70% for earth.

Noble gases in E-chondrites

The combination of noble gas data for 12 E-chondrites with literature data shows K-Ar ages greater than 4 AE for 14 out of 18 meteorites, while U, Th-He ages are often shorter. Cosmic ray exposure ages are found to differ systematically between types E4 and E6, with the respective, below-16 Myr and above-30 Myr values implying that the E-chondrite parent body predominantly contains a single petrologic type on the 1 km scale of individual impacts in contrast to the mixed parent bodies of the ordinary chondrites. Amounts of planetary gas in E4-E6 chondrites fall in the range for ordinary chondrites of types 4-6, but fail to correlate with petrologic type or volatile trace element contents, in contrast to the ordinary chondrites. Analyses of mineral separates show that the planetary gases are concentrated in an HFand HCl-insoluble mineral, similar to phase Q. The subsolar gases are located in an HCl- and HNO3-resistant phase.

Enhanced orbital geochemical images by the Laplacian subtraction method

Orbital geochemical studies of the moon based on X-ray fluorescence and gamma-ray spectroscopy have been successful. There are, however, difficulties if geologic units or other features to be investigated are too small. Investigations have been conducted with the objective to improve with the aid of image enhancement methods both spatial resolution and contrast for the geochemical experiments. A description is provided of the Laplacian subtraction method of enhancement. It was found that the application of a least-squares version of this method to the Mg/Al ratios obtained by orbital X-ray fluorescence improved geochemical images considerably. The spatial resolution increased by about a factor of 2 and the contrast also increased. The Laplacian of an image can also be used to detect very small 'hot' or 'cold' spots in an image.

Cross correlation analysis of medium energy gamma rays for the Northern Hemisphere

In the cross correlation method the observed gamma rays are compared with the expected telescope response for a discrete celestial source. The background consists of the atmospheric flux with its maximum near the horizon, the cosmic diffuse flux, and neutron induced gamma rays in the telescope. In sharp contrast to the background, a celestial source produces an asymmetric azimuthal response which varies predictably in time as the source moves through the telescope's aperture. This contrast serves as the basis of the cross correlation technique. Continuous data of 47.5 hr were obtained during a balloon flight from Palestine, TX from 0930 UT on September 30, 1978 to 2300 UT on October 1, 1978. The Crab Nebula-Anticenter region was observed on two consecutive days. A number of other medium energy source candidates also crossed the field-of-view. The obtained results are discussed.

Spectral discrimination of lithologic facies in the granite of the Pedra Branca Goias using LANDSAT 1 digital imagery

The applicability of LANDSAT MSS imagery for discriminating geobotanical associations observed in zones of cassiterite-rich metasomatic alterations in the granitic body of Serra da Pedra Branca was investigated. Computer compatible tapes of dry and rainy season imagery were analyzed. Image enlargement, corrections, linear contrast stretch, and ratioing of noncorrelated spectral bands were performed using the Image 100 with a grey scale of 256 levels between zero and 255. Only bands 5 and 7 were considered. Band ratioing of noncorrelated channels (5 and 7) of rainy season imagery permits distinction of areas with different vegetation coverage percentage, which corresponds to geobotanial associations in the area studied. The linear contrast stretch of channel 5, especially of the dry season image is very unsatisfactory in this area.
