Screening method improves performance of nickel-cadmium batteries

Weight of single plate in batch is used as criterion for selecting those plates with uniform, high ampere hour capacity. When substrate and plaque weights are uniform, observed current capacity differences are dependent on quantity of active material in plaque.

Insolubilization process increases enzyme stability

Enzymes complexed with polymeric matrices contain properties suggesting application to enzyme-controlled reactions. Stability of insolubilized enzyme derivatives is markedly greater than that of soluble enzymes and physical form of insolubilized enzymes is useful in column and batch processes.

FORTRAN 4 digital program changer

Computer program modifies other source language programs as aid to debugging, checkout and final documentation to eliminate manual performance of rearranging and incrementing statement numbers, identifying and sequencing cards and inserting and/or removing end-of-batch symbols.

Mechanisms and kinetics of cellulose fermentation for protein production

The development of a process (and ancillary processing and analytical techniques) to produce bacterial single-cell protein of good nutritional quality from waste cellulose is discussed. A fermentation pilot plant and laboratory were developed and have been in operation for about two years. Single-cell protein (SCP) can be produced from sugarcane bagasse--a typical agricultural cellulosic waste. The optimization and understanding of this process and its controlling variables are examined. Both batch and continuous fermentation runs have been made under controlled conditions in the 535 liter pilot plant vessel and in the laboratory 14-liter fermenters.

Vacuum distillation: vapor filtered-catalytic oxidation water reclamation system utilizing radioisotopes

The development of a functional model water reclamation system is discussed. The system produces potable water by distillation from the urine and respiration-perspiration condensate at the normal rate generated by four men. Basic processes employed are vacuum distillation, vapor filtration, vapor phase catalytic oxidation, and condensation. The system is designed to use four 75-watt isotope heaters for distillation thermal input, and one 45-watt isotope for the catalytic oxidation unit. The system is capable of collecting and storing urine, and provides for stabilizing the urine by chemical pretreatment. The functional model system is designed for operation in a weightless condition with liquid-vapor phase separators for the evaporator still, and centrifugal separators for urine collection and vapor condensation. The system provides for storing and dispensing reclaimed potable water. The system operates in a batch mode for 40 days, with urine residues accumulating in the evaporator. The evaporator still and residue are removed to storage and replaced with a fresh still for the next 40-day period.

Demonstration of a sterilizable solid rocket motor system, addendum

Technical emphasis was placed on characterization of a scaled-up batch of the improved propellant formulation and determination of the effects of dry heat sterilization on propellant integrity and structural response. The grain stress analysis was directed toward tailoring a fully-bonded grain to the calculated propellant allowable stresses and investigating various bond release concepts to relieve stresses incurred in thermal shrinkage following sterilization.

Mechanisms for the adhesion of silver to glow discharge sensitized perfluorinated ethylene propylene (PEP)

Details are given for the deposition of silver onto FEP for a batch coater capable of handling 864 square inches at a time. The effectiveness of the glow discharge is shown to be optimum when the FEP faces the anode. Using solid state theory based upon the work function difference, and the heuristic assumption that the surface of FEP is populated with fluoride ions, it is argued that an anode sensitized surface develops states receptive to electron transfer from silver, whereas a cathode sensitized surface is polarized only, and as a result cannot permanently trap charge. Thermodynamic arguments given show that an order of magnitude of 10 to the 9th power electrons are transferred into states to a depth of 10 nm.

An efficient algorithm using matrix methods to solve wind tunnel force-balance equations

An iterative procedure applying matrix methods to accomplish an efficient algorithm for automatic computer reduction of wind-tunnel force-balance data has been developed. Balance equations are expressed in a matrix form that is convenient for storing balance sensitivities and interaction coefficient values for online or offline batch data reduction. The convergence of the iterative values to a unique solution of this system of equations is investigated, and it is shown that for balances which satisfy the criteria discussed, this type of solution does occur. Methods for making sensitivity adjustments and initial load effect considerations in wind-tunnel applications are also discussed, and the logic for determining the convergence accuracy limits for the iterative solution is given. This more efficient data reduction program is compared with the technique presently in use at the NASA Langley Research Center, and computational times on the order of one-third or less are demonstrated by use of this new program.

Achievement of a low-outgassing white paint system for spacecraft thermal control

Test results and data for achieving a low-outgassing polymer resin suitable for potting or a paint pigment are presented. The resin, prepared in 0.5-kg (1-lb) batches, is acceptable for spacecraft use; its weight loss is less than 0.5 percent, and the volatile condensable materials are less than 0.05 percent. The paint adheres to a primed fiber glass or aluminum substrate. Results of UV irradiation, electron and proton radiation, and thermal cycling are presented.

NASA work unit system file maintenance manual

The NASA Work Unit System is a management information system for research tasks (i.e., work units) performed under NASA grants and contracts. It supplies profiles on research efforts and statistics on fund distribution. The file maintenance operator can add, delete and change records at a remote terminal or can submit punched cards to the computer room for batch update. The system is designed for file maintenance by a person with little or no knowledge of data processing techniques.
