Zinc oxide (ZnO) hybrid metasurfaces exhibiting broadly tunable topological properties

Extreme light confinement observed in periodic photonic structures, such as the vortex singularities in momentum (k) space, has been associated with their topological nature. Consequently, by exploiting and tuning their topological properties, optical metasurfaces have been demonstrated as an attractive platform for active photonics. However, given the fact that most active media under external excitations can only provide limited refractive index change, the potential advancements offered by the topological character of active metasurfaces have remained mostly unexplored. Zinc oxide (ZnO), which has recently exhibited optically-induced extraordinarily large permittivity modulations at visible and near-infrared frequencies, is an excellent active material for dynamic metasurfaces exhibiting strong tuning. This work demonstrates that a hybrid metasurface consisting of an array of ZnO nanodisks on a silver backplane displays broadly tunable topological properties. In particular, by performing k-space scattering simulations using measured pump-fluence-dependent material properties of ZnO, we study in detail the light reflection from the hybrid metasurface. Our results validate that the large k-space topology tuning of the metasurface can result in enormously strong polarization manipulation of near-infrared light in the vicinity of the topological features. The observed polarization switching effect is highly sensitive to the polarization and wavelength of an incident wave, owing to the symmetry and dispersion characteristics of the proposed system. Our study indicates that leveraging a combination of the extraordinary material properties and the k-space topology, hybrid metasurfaces based on ZnO may open new avenues for creating all-optical switchable metadevices.

Solid-state ionics: The key to the discovery and domination of lithium batteries: some learnings from β-alumina and titanium disulfide

We report solid state ionics, the study of fast ion transport in solids, expanded explosively after the discovery of sodium ion transport in b-alumina 50 years ago and has revolutionized energy storage. Lithium ion batteries have come from a dream with titanium disulfide to enabling the communications revolution and are enabling renewable energy. Much can be learnt from these early studies, that will allow the attainment of a fossil-free society and a sustainable environment.

Interpolated Sounding and Gridded Sounding Value-Added Products

Standard Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Climate Research Facility sounding files provide atmospheric state data in one dimension of increasing time and height per sonde launch. Many applications require a quick estimate of the atmospheric state at higher time resolution. The INTERPOLATEDSONDE (i.e., Interpolated Sounding) Value-Added Product (VAP) transforms sounding data into continuous daily files on a fixed time-height grid, at 1-minute time resolution, on 332 levels, from the surface up to a limit of approximately 40 km. The grid extends that high so the full height of soundings can be captured; however, most soundings terminate at an altitude between 25 and 30 km, above which no data is provided. Between soundings, the VAP linearly interpolates atmospheric state variables in time for each height level. In addition, INTERPOLATEDSONDE provides relative humidity scaled to microwave radiometer (MWR) observations. The INTERPOLATEDSONDE VAP, a continuous time-height grid of relative humidity-corrected sounding data, is intended to provide input to higher-order products, such as the Merged Soundings (MERGESONDE; Troyan 2012) VAP, which extends INTERPOLATEDSONDE by incorporating model data. The INTERPOLATEDSONDE VAP also is used to correct gaseous attenuation of radar reflectivity in products such as the KAZRCOR VAP.

Fermi Gases in Bichromatic Superlattices

The purpose of the program is the broad study of designer materials made of ultra-cold atoms and light, which provides new paradigms for emulating exotic layered systems. Bichromatic superlattices enable control and study of both dimensionality and dispersion in layered, strongly correlated Fermi gases, to model high-temperature superfluidity/superconductivity. Most layered materials are quasi-two-dimensional, neither two-dimensional, like a sheet, nor three-dimensional, like a gas, but somewhere in between. In quasi-2D layers with an unequal number of spin-up and spin-down electrons, particularly strong attraction between pairs of electrons with opposite spins is predicted to achieve the highest possible superconducting transition temperatures. To understand these materials, we emulate them with a layered, ultra-cold Fermi gas of 6Li atoms, magnetically tuned near a collisional (Feshbach) resonance, where precise control of the attraction, spin-composition, dimensionality and dispersion provides new tests of theory. The primary goals are of the program are: (1) Elucidation of the effects of dimensionality and confining potential shape on the enhancement of high-temperature superfluidity in a layered, strongly correlated Fermi gases; (2) Control of dispersion and the study of tunable Dirac points in one dimension.

Basic Research of Intrinsic Tamper indication Markings and Patterns defined by Pulsed Laser Irradiation

With our previous research, it was found that surface asperities or roughness must be present to create periodic surface structures upon laser exposure. In particular, an initial rough surface morphology (such as that found with a machined surface) provides multiple sites for light scattering, which underlies the formation of periodic ripple morphologies. Light scattering from a random surface creates patterns of periodic structures (with complex orientations) that could be used as intrinsic markings for tagging materials and equipment. Despite these initial findings, the fundamental mechanisms that give rise to periodic surface structures and their characteristic shapes were not identified in prior research.

Notes from the GEM Chair

We certainly live in unusual and quite challenging times, and we hope everyone is healthy and doing well. For the first time in almost 30 years, because of the current COVID-19 crisis, the GEM Steering Committee decided to cancel the in-person GEM Summer Workshop and organize a virtual meeting in its place. The Virtual GEM will occur during the same week as the originally scheduled in-person workshop, July 20-23, with Monday July 20 as the student day. We will try to maintain the original format of GEM as much as possible, with plenary sessions in the morning, Focus Group breakout sessions in the afternoon, and poster sessions in the evening. Please provide your full support to the meeting organizers to help make this first VGEM a great success! As of now, we still plan to hold the GEM 2021 summer workshop in Hawaii from July 26-30, 2021, with a GEM student day on July 25. This workshop will be back-to-back with SHINE (to occur at the same hotel the week after GEM) - please consider attending both!

Gamma-Ray Mirrors (Quarterly Progress Report Q2 FY20 Jan-Mar 2020)

During the second quarter of FY20, the optic design, or Phase II Task 2 of the project, continued. Our investigation of two full revolution shell designs has shown that the radius of the optic would be small to maintain throws to reasonable limits. These efforts are informing our alternative segmented optics design in Q3. We have also started investigating the Kirkpatrick-Baez Optic as a backup option.

Physics-Informed Machine Learning for Epidemiological Models

One challenge of using compartmental SEIR models for public health planning is the difficulty in manually tuning parameters to capture behavior reflected in the real-world data. This team conducted initial, exploratory analysis of a novel technique to use physics-informed machine learning tools to rapidly develop data-driven models for physical systems. This machine learning approach may be used to perform data assimilation of compartment models which account for unknown interactions between geospatial domains (i.e. diffusion processes coupling across neighborhoods/counties/states/etc.). Results presented here are early, proof-of-concept ideas that demonstrate initial success in using a physically informed neural network (PINN) model to assimilate data in a compartmental epidemiology model. The results demonstrate initial success and warrant further research and development.
