On tests for baby universes in AdS/CFT

To address a puzzle by Antonini and Rath — where a single CFT state has two bulk duals, one with a baby universe and one without — Engelhardt and Gesteau recently devised a test for baby universes in AdS/CFT. Using the extrapolate dictionary, they showed that the boundary dual of a bulk swap test favored bulk spacetimes without a baby universe, providing evidence against their semiclassical validity. However, recent work suggests that holographic maps should post-select on such closed universes, and we argue that this is consistent with the extrapolate dictionary. We therefore construct a new holographic map for bulk states with baby universes and use this to show that the swap test cannot distinguish between Antonini and Rath’s two candidate bulk duals. This not only allows for a valid semiclassical description of the baby universe, but also enables the application of recent techniques for including observers in holographic maps.

Shocks and information exchange in de Sitter space

We discuss some implications of recent progress in understanding the black hole information paradox for complementarity in de Sitter space. Extending recent work by two of the authors, we describe a bulk procedure that allows information expelled through the cosmological horizon to be received by an antipodal observer. Generically, this information transfer takes a scrambling time t=H- 1 (S ds ). We emphasize that this procedure relies crucially on selection of the Bunch-Davies vacuum state, interpreted as the thermofield double state that maximally entangles two antipodal static patches. The procedure also requires the presence of an (entangled) energy reservoir, created by the collection of Hawking modes from the cosmological horizon. We show how this procedure avoids a cloning paradox and comment on its implications.

Black hole scattering and partition functions

When computing the ideal gas thermal canonical partition function for a scalar outside a black hole horizon, one encounters the divergent single-particle density of states (DOS) due to the continuous nature of the normal mode spectrum. Recasting the Lorentzian field equation into an effective 1D scattering problem, we argue that the scattering phases encode non-trivial information about the DOS and can be extracted by “renormalizing” the DOS with respect to a reference. This defines a renormalized free energy up to an arbitrary additive constant. Interestingly, we discover that the 1-loop Euclidean path integral, as computed by the Denef-Hartnoll-Sachdev formula, fixes the reference free energy to be that on a Rindler-like region, and the renormalized DOS captures the quasinormal modes for the scalar. We support these claims with the examples of scalars on static BTZ, Nariai black holes and the de Sitter static patch. For black holes in asymptotically flat space, the renormalized DOS is captured by the phase of the transmission coefficient whose magnitude squared is the greybody factor. We comment on possible connections with recent works from an algebraic point of view.

Out-of-time-ordered-correlators for the pure inverted quartic oscillator: classical chaos meets quantum stability

Out-of-time-ordered-correlators (OTOCs) have been suggested as a means to diagnose chaotic behavior in quantum mechanical systems. Recently, it was found that OTOCs display exponential growth for the inverted quantum harmonic oscillator, mirroring the fact that this system is classically and quantum mechanically unstable. In this work, I study OTOCs for the inverted anharmonic (pure quartic) oscillator in quantum mechanics, finding only oscillatory behavior despite the classically unstable nature of the system. For higher temperature, OTOCs seem to exhibit saturation consistent with a value of –2< x 2 > T < p 2 > T at late times. I provide analytic evidence from the spectral zeta-function and the WKB method as well as direct numerical solutions of the Schrödinger equation that the inverted quartic oscillator possesses a real and positive energy eigenspectrum, and normalizable wave-functions.

Building bulk geometry from the tensor Radon transform

Using the tensor Radon transform and related numerical methods, we study how bulk geometries can be explicitly reconstructed from boundary entanglement entropies in the specific case of AdS 3 /CFT 2 . We find that, given the boundary entanglement entropies of a 2d CFT, this framework provides a quantitative measure that detects whether the bulk dual is geometric in the perturbative (near AdS) limit. In the case where a well-defined bulk geometry exists, we explicitly reconstruct the unique bulk metric tensor once a gauge choice is made. We then examine the emergent bulk geometries for static and dynamical scenarios in holography and in many-body systems. Apart from the physics results, our work demonstrates that numerical methods are feasible and effective in the study of bulk reconstruction in AdS/CFT.

The cosmological bootstrap: weight-shifting operators and scalar seeds

A key insight of the bootstrap approach to cosmological correlations is the fact that all correlators of slow-roll inflation can be reduced to a unique building block - the four-point function of conformally coupled scalars, arising from the exchange of a massive scalar. Correlators corresponding to the exchange of particles with spin are then obtained by applying a spin-raising operator to the scalar-exchange solution. Similarly, the correlators of massless external fields can be derived by acting with a suitable weight-raising operator. In this paper, we present a systematic and highly streamlined derivation of these operators (and their generalizations) using tools of conformal field theory. Our results greatly simplify the theoretical foundations of the cosmological bootstrap program.

A compendium of sphere path integrals

We study the manifestly covariant and local 1-loop path integrals on S d+1 for general massive, shift-symmetric and (partially) massless totally symmetric tensor fields of arbitrary spin s ≥ 0 in any dimensions d ≥ 2. After reviewing the cases of massless fields with spin s = 1, 2, we provide a detailed derivation for path integrals of massless fields of arbitrary integer spins s ≥ 1. Following the standard procedure of Wick-rotating the negative conformal modes, we find a higher spin analog of Polchinski’s phase for any integer spin s ≥ 2. The derivations for low-spin (s = 0, 1, 2) massive, shift-symmetric and partially massless fields are also carried out explicitly. Finally, we provide general prescriptions for general massive and shift-symmetric fields of arbitrary integer spins and partially massless fields of arbitrary integer spins and depths.

The endpoint of partial deconfinement

We study the matrix quantum mechanics of two free hermitian N × N matrices subject to a singlet constraint in the microcanonical ensemble. This is the simplest example of a theory that at large N has a confinement/deconfinement transition. In the microcanonical ensemble, it also exhibits partial deconfinement with a Hagedorn density of states. We argue that the entropy of these configurations, based on a combinatorial counting of Young diagrams, are dominated by Young diagrams that have the VKLS shape. When the shape gets to the maximal depth allowed for a Young diagram of SU(N), namely N, we argue that the system stops exhibiting the Hagedorn behavior. The number of boxes (energy) at the transition is N 2 /4, independent of the charge of the state.

On the completeness of contraction map proof method for holographic entropy inequalities

The contraction map proof method is the commonly used method to prove holographic entropy inequalities. Existence of a contraction map corresponding to a holographic entropy inequality is a sufficient condition for its validity. But is it also necessary? In this note, we answer that question in affirmative for all linear holographic entropy inequalities with rational coefficients. We show that the pre-image of a non-contraction map is not a hypercube, but a proper cubical subgraph, and show that this manifests as alterations to the geodesic structure in the bulk, which leads to the violation of inequalities by holographic geometries obeying the RT formula.

The coexistence of the streaming instability and the vertical shear instability in protoplanetary disks

The streaming instability is a promising mechanism to induce the formation of planetesimals. Nonetheless, this process has been found in previous studies to require either a dust-to-gas surface density ratio or a dust size that is enhanced compared to observed values. Employing two-dimensional global simulations of protoplanetary disks, we show that the vertical shear instability and the streaming instability in concert can cause dust concentration that is sufficient for planetesimal formation for lower surface density ratios and smaller dust sizes than the streaming instability in isolation, and in particular under conditions that are consistent with observational constraints. This is because dust overdensities forming in pressure bumps induced by the vertical shear instability act as seeds for the streaming instability and are enhanced by it. While our two-dimensional model does not include self-gravity, we find that strong dust clumping and the formation (and dissolution) of gravitationally unstable overdensities can be robustly inferred from the evolution of the maximum or the mean dust-to-gas volume density ratio. The vertical shear instability puffs up the dust layer to an average mid-plane dust-to-gas density ratio that is significantly below unity. We therefore find that reaching a mid-plane density ratio of one is not necessary to trigger planetesimal formation via the streaming instability when it acts in unison with the vertical shear instability.

Excitation spectra of quantum matter without quasiparticles. II. Random t - J models

Here, we present numerical solutions of the spectral functions of large dimension t -J models with random nearest neighbor exchange and global SU(M) spin rotation symmetry. The solutions are obtained from the saddle-point equations of the large dimension limit, followed by the large M limit. The same saddle point equations also apply to the model with all-to-all and random hopping and exchange. Such a t -J model realizes a deconfined critical state proposed as a model for the optimally doped cuprates. The large M theory involves Green’s functions for fractionalized spinons and holons carrying emergent U(1) gauge charges, obeying relations similar to those of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models. The low frequency spectral functions are compared with an analytic analysis of the operator scaling dimensions with good agreement. We also compute the low frequency and temperature behavior of experimentally observable gauge-invariant observables: the electron Green’s function, the local spin susceptibility and the optical conductivity, along with the temperature dependence of the d.c. resistivity. The time reparameterization soft mode (equivalent to the boundary graviton in holographically dual models of two-dimensional quantum gravity) makes important contributions to all observables and provides a linear-in-temperature contribution to the d.c. resistivity.

Holographic odderon at TOTEM?

We consider the contribution of the Odderon to diffractive p p and p p ¯ elastic scattering at large center of mass energy. We identify the Odderon and Pomeron with the Reggeized 1 ± − and 2 + + glueballs in the bulk, respectively. We use for the gravity dual description the repulsive wall model, to account for the proper Gribov diffusion for off-forward scattering. The eikonalized and unitarized amplitudes exhibit a vanishingly small rho-parameter, and a slope parameter fixed by twice the closed string slope. The results for the differential and total cross sections are compared to the empirical results reported recently by the TOTEM collaboration. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Modular Commutators in Conformal Field Theory

The modular commutator is a recently discovered entanglement quantity that quantifies the chirality of the underlying many-body quantum state. In this Letter, we derive a universal expression for the modular commutator in conformal field theories in 1 + 1 dimensions and discuss its salient features. We show that the modular commutator depends only on the chiral central charge and the conformal cross ratio. We test this formula for a gapped (2 + 1)-dimensional system with a chiral edge, i.e., the quantum Hall state, and observe excellent agreement with numerical simulations. Furthermore, we propose a geometric dual for the modular commutator in certain preferred states of the AdS/CFT correspondence. Finally, for these states, we argue that the modular commutator can be obtained from a set of crossing angles between intersecting Ryu-Takayanagi surfaces.

Hybrid SO(10) Axion Model without Quality Problem

Invisible axion models that solve the strong C P problem via the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) mechanism typically have a quality problem that arises from quantum gravity effects which violate all global symmetries. These models therefore require extreme fine-tuning of parameters for consistency. We present a new solution to the quality problem in a unified SO ( 10 ) × U ( 1 ) a gauge model, where U ( 1 ) a is an anomaly free axial gauge symmetry. PQ symmetry emerges as an accidental symmetry in this setup, which admits a PQ breaking scale as large as 7 × 10 11 GeV , allowing for the axion to be the cosmological dark matter. We call this a hybrid axion model due to its unique feature that it interpolates between the popular KSVZ and DFSZ axion models. Its predictions for the experimentally measurable axion couplings to the nucleon and electron are distinct from those of the usual models, a feature that can be used to test it. Furthermore, the model has no domain wall problem and it provides a realistic and predictive framework for fermion masses and mixings. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Cosmological Hydrodynamics at Exascale: A Trillion-Particle Leap in Capability

Resolving the most fundamental questions in cosmology requires simulations that match the scale, fidelity, and physical complexity demanded by next-generation sky surveys. To achieve the realism needed for this critical scientific partnership, detailed gas dynamics must be treated self-consistently with gravity for end-to-end modeling of structure formation. Exascale computing enables simulations that span survey-scale volumes while incorporating key astrophysical processes that shape complex cosmic structures. We present results from CRK-HACC, a cosmological hydrodynamics code built for extreme scalability. Using separation-of-scale techniques, GPU-resident tree solvers, in situ analysis pipelines, and multi-tiered I/O, CRK-HACCexecuted Frontier-E: a four trillion particle full-sky simulation, over an order of magnitude larger than previous efforts. The run achieved 513.1 PFLOPs peak performance, processing 46.6 billion particles per second and writing more than 100 PB of data in just over one week of runtime. Frontier-E marks a significant advance in predictive modeling for next-generation cosmological science.

Resolved Gravity Waves in the Extratropical Stratosphere: Effect of Horizontal Resolution Increase from O (10) to O (1) km

Global ECMWF IFS simulations with horizontal grid spacings of 1, 4, and 9 km are used to assess gravity wave forcing (GWF) in the extratropical stratosphere. Results with important implications for GWF parameterizations at high and intermediate resolutions are presented. A doubling in the zonal-mean resolved GWF is observed when the horizontal resolution is increased from 9 to 1 km. Small-scale gravity waves with horizontal wavelengths < 100 km dominate this increase. Over most regions, excluding the polar night jet in the Antarctic spring, the total (resolved + parameterized) GWF at 9 km (4 km) is underestimated by up to 30% (15%). This implies that the parameterization of GWF is still required at 9 and 4 km horizontal resolutions. Despite the small land area in the Southern Hemisphere (SH), the resolved orographic and nonorographic GWF contribute equally to the total GWF in the SH at 1 km resolution. This is not reflected in the partitioning of the parameterized GWF, which has a significantly larger nonorographic contribution at 9 km. As a result, a zonal-mean momentum budget analysis reveals that the total GWF contributes one-third of SH springtime polar vortex deceleration at 1 km, whereas the contribution is as much as 50% at 9 km. In conclusion, this suggests that a rebalancing of the parameterized nonorographic and orographic GWF is required.

An Open Benchmark of One Million High-Fidelity Cislunar Trajectories

Cislunar space spans from geosynchronous altitudes to beyond the Moon and will underpin future exploration, science, and security operations. We describe and release an open dataset of one million numerically propagated cislunar trajectories generated with the open-source Space Situational Awareness Python package (SSAPy). The model includes high-degree Earth/Moon gravity, solar gravity, and Earth/Sun radiation pressure; other planetary gravities are omitted by design for computational efficiency. Initial conditions uniformly sample commonly used osculating-element ranges, and each trajectory is propagated for up to six years under a single, fixed start epoch. The dataset is intended as a reusable benchmark for method development (e.g., space domain awareness, navigation, and machine-learning pipelines), a reference library for statistical studies of orbit families, and a starting point for community-driven extensions (e.g., alternative epochs). We report empirically observed stability trends (e.g., a band near ~5 GEO and persistence of some co-orbital classes including L4/L5 librators) as dataset descriptors rather than new dynamical results. The chief contribution is the scale, fidelity, organization (CSV/HDF5 with full state time series and metadata), and open availability, which together lower the barrier to comparative and data-driven studies in the cislunar regime.
