Fuel Conversion Efforts at the High Flux Isotope Reactor – a 2020 Status Update

The High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) provides one of the world’s highest steady-state neutron fluxes in the world for neutron scattering experiments focused on impactful scientific discovery, as well as materials irradiation studies and production of medical, industrial, and research isotopes. Efforts are ongoing to convert HFIR from high-enriched uranium (HEU) to low-enriched uranium (LEU) fuel while maintaining or enhancing current performance and safety margin, thus sustaining HFIR’s mission portfolio and reactor-based neutron science leadership. This paper presents a status update on the HFIR fuel conversion efforts.

Computational Fermi Level Engineering and Doping-Type Conversion of Ga2O3 Via Three-Step Processing

Ga2O3 is being actively explored for power electronics, and other applications due to its ultra- wide bandgap and low projected fabrication cost of high-quality crystals. N-type doping of Ga2O3 can be achieved and tuned, but p-type doping faces fundamental obstacles. Successful engineering of Ga2O3 based devices requires critical control of doping density, Fermi level position, providing opportunities for predictive process simulation. We use first-principles defect equilibrium calculations to simulate a 3-step growth- annealing-quench protocol for hydrogen assisted Mg doping in Ga2O3, taking into account the hydrogen- oxygen-water gas phase equilibrium. We predict type conversion to a net p-type regime following O-rich annealing after growth under reducing conditions in the presence of H2. We show that there is an optimal temperature that maximizes the net acceptor density during the equilibrium annealing step for a given Mg doping level. Quenching of non-equilibrium annealed samples then results in a Fermi level EF below mid-gap down to about EV +1.5 eV, creating a significant number of uncompensated neutral MgGa0 acceptors. This type converted Ga2O3 can create significant built-in field in a p-n junction with an adjoining n-type material and could enable vertical MOSFETs.

Computational Fermi Level Engineering and Doping-Type Conversion of Ga2O3 Via Three-Step Processing

Ga2O3 is being actively explored for power electronics, deep-ultraviolet optoelectronics, and other applications due to its ultra-wide bandgap and low projected fabrication cost of large-size and high-quality crystals. N-type doping of Ga2O3 can be achieved and tuned, but p-type doping faces fundamental obstacles due to deep character of acceptor levels and polaron transport of resulting holes. However, successful engineering of Ga2O3 based devices requires critical control of doping density, Fermi level position, and free carrier concentration, providing opportunities for predictive process simulation. We use first-principles defect theory and defect equilibrium calculations to simulate a 3-step growth-annealing-quench protocol for hydrogen assisted Mg doping in Ga2O3, taking into account the hydrogen-oxygen-water gas phase equilibrium. We predict type conversion to a net p-type regime following O-rich annealing after growth under reducing conditions in the presence of H2. This process is similar to the Mg acceptor activation by H removal in GaN. The resulting free hole concentration in quenched samples is very low (109 – 1012 cm-3) due to deep energy level of these Mg acceptors, but this type converted Ga2O3 material can create a significant built-in field in a p-n junction with an adjoining n-type material. Additionally, the electron concentration is greatly suppressed in such acceptor-doped Ga2O3, which could enable the use as a current blocking layer to fabricate normally-off (enhancement-mode) vertical Ga2O3 based metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs), and as a guard ring for edge termination in MOSFETs and Schottky barrier diodes (SBDs) with increased breakdown voltage.

Infrared transmissive concentrated photovoltaics for coupling solar electric energy conversion to solar thermal energy utilization

The use of photovoltaic (PV) cells to convert solar energy to electricity is becoming increasingly prevalent; however, there are still significant limitations associated with the widespread adoption of PV cells for electricity needs. There is a clear need for a high efficiency solar power system that supplies electricity at a competitive cost and that provides for an on-demand supply of electricity as well as energy storage. By combining aspects of concentrated solar power and concentrated photovoltaics, the present invention provides a device that enables the conversion of sunlight to electricity at very high efficiencies and that enables the transmission of thermal energy to heat storage devices for later use. The disclosed device enables transmissive CPV through the use of a multijunction PV cell mounted on a transparent base. The use of a multijunction cell allows for highly efficient absorption of light above the bandgap of the lowest bandgap subcell. The transparent base permits transmission of a high percentage of the remaining light below the bandgap of the lowest bandgap subcell. The present invention also discloses a method of generating electricity through the use of a transmissive CPV device. Sunlight is concentrated onto one or more surfaces of the device. High energy light is absorbed by a multijunction PV cell and converted directly to electricity, while low energy light is transmitted through the device into a thermal storage device, which may then be coupled to a heat engine to generate dispatchable electricity.

Sandwich gasification process for high-efficiency conversion of carbonaceous fuels to clean syngas with zero residual carbon discharge

The present invention discloses a gasifier and/or a gasification process that provides a long, uniform temperature zone in the gasifier, regardless of the particle size, chemical composition, and moisture content of the fuel by sandwiching a reduction zones between two oxidation zones. The gasifier and/or gasification process has a char that is more energy-dense and almost devoid of moisture that affords for an additional (or char) oxidation zone with a temperature that is higher than a first oxidation zone which is closer to an evaporation and devolatilization zone. As such, the additional (or char) oxidation zone contributes to augmenting the reduction zone temperature, thereby providing a favorable dual impact in improving syngas composition and near-complete conversion of the tar.

Chemical looping conversion of CH4/CO2 to syngas on 5wt.%Ni@Ce0.6Zr0.4O2 catalyst: Impact of dynamic accumulation of surface carbon and oxygen vacancies

Syngas, a combination of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2), is a precursor to many chemicals and fuels, contributing to the billion-dollar global hydrocarbon industry. Chemical looping reforming (CLR) of the greenhouse gases methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) allows for energy-efficient production of syngas. 5wt.% nickel (Ni) on ceria-zirconia (5wt%Ni@Ce0.6Zr0.4O2) mixed metal oxide catalyst was investigated here to explore pathways for enhanced syngas production on sustainable earth-abundant transition metal supported catalysts. The role of reduction-oxidation (redox) state of the catalyst, and carbon formation on the catalyst surface during chemical looping is explored to drive superior reaction kinetics, conversions, selectivity, and syngas ratios (H2/CO). The bulk and surface structure of the catalyst, along with carbon deposition features were characterized by electron microscopy, X-Ray diffraction, and ex situ Raman spectroscopy. The dynamic evolution of catalysts under CLR reaction conditions and the intrinsic reaction mechanisms were probed with in situ Raman spectroscopy, in situ Fourier transform spectroscopy, dynamic oxygen storage capacity (DOSC), and the Temporal Analysis of Products (TAP) reactor studies. Intrinsic kinetics of syngas production via CLR was correlated to the redox state of catalyst and the participation of nickel-catalyzed multiwalled carbon nanotube (CNT) growth, allowing enhanced CLR reaction performance.

Reflective metasurfaces for broadband terahertz linear-to-circular polarization conversion and circular dichroism spectroscopy

Metasurface polarization convertors permit conversion of an input linear polarization to right- or left-handed circular polarization based on the orientation of the input linear polarization, over a broad bandwidth and with high efficiency. The reflected circular polarizations can be used to evaluate samples for circular dichroism. A THz time-domain detection provides a time domain terahertz signal that is Fourier transformed to produce a THz circular dichroism spectrum.
