Ion thruster diagnostics using spectral line amplitudes

The optical radiation from the plasma discharge of an electron bombardment mercury ion thrustor was investigated. Using the measured ratio of the Hg I line amplitude at 3655 A to that at 3650 A, a theory incorporating a bimodal electron distribution (Maxwell electrons plus primary electrons) was used to obtain the average electron temperature and primary electron fraction in the thruster ion chamber. The electron temperature ranged from about 1.2 eV to 6.6 eV; whereas the primary electron fraction varied from zero percent to about 5 percent. These values depended upon the discharge voltage and the radial location of the measurement. The percentage of doubly ionized mercury produced in the chamber was also determined as a function of discharge voltage.

Ion thruster diagnostics using spectral line amplitudes.

The optical radiation from the plasma discharge of an electron bombardment mercury ion thruster was investigated. This work extends and refines earlier measurements, correcting certain ambiguities that arose in the analysis of line amplitudes. Traveling ionospheric disturbance as a diagnostic tool for thermospheric dynamics.

Evaluation of observational results of traveling ionospheric disturbances. The experiment continuously monitors the wave polarization of signals transmitted by the geostationary satellite ATS 3. One year of single-station data has been compiled for synoptic study. When observed at three stations, in addition to the period of the wave, the horizontal phase velocity can be determined. An attempt has been made to link the experimentally determined ionospheric parameters with the neutral atmospheric parameters by using a crude theory. The result suggests that a better theory should be developed, so that the diagnosis of these thermospheric parameters can be made by making traveling disturbance observations. In doing so, many previously ignored factors should be reexamined, especially the effect produced by high thermospheric winds.

Temperature distribution in a stellar atmosphere diagnostic basis

A stellar chromosphere is considered a region where the temperature increases outward and where the temperature structure of the gas controls the shape of the spectral lines. It is shown that lines which have collision-dominated source sink terms, like the Ca(+) and Mg(+) H and K lines, can be used to obtain the distribution of temperature with height from observed line profiles. Intrinsic emission lines and geometrical emission lines are found in spectral regions where the continuum is depressed. In visual regions, where the continuum is not depressed, emission core in absorption lines are attributed to reflections of intrinsic emission lines.

Real-time Optical Alignment and Diagnostic System (ROADS)

The ultimate and most frequent usage of ROADS will be the alignment of subassemblies (collector and collimator) prior to their installation in a chamber. The system as designed has inherent associated capabilities well applied to acceptance testing of the No. 4 mirror, prediction of in-chamber performance, generation of a catalog of test results and other data, providing data for the plotting of isointensity lines, and other applications which are discussed. The ROADS system will collect, process, display, analyze, and retain data as required for components, partial subassemblies, complete subassemblies, complete modules, and multimodular arrays.

Diagnostics of seeded RF plasmas: An experimental study related to the gaseous core reactor

Measurements of the temperature profiles in an RF argon plasma were made over magnetic field intensities ranging from 20 amp turns/cm to 80 amp turns/cm. The results were compared with a one-dimensional numerical treatment of the governing equations and with an approximate closed form analytical solution that neglected radiation losses. The average measured temperatures in the plasma compared well with the numerical treatment, though the experimental profile showed less of an off center temperature peak than predicted by theory. This may be a result of the complex turbulent flow pattern present in the experimental torch and not modeled in the numerical treatment. The radiation term cannot be neglected for argon at the power levels investigated. The closed form analytical approximation that neglected radiation led to temperature predictions on the order of 1000 K to 2000 K higher than measured or predicted by the numerical treatment which considered radiation losses.

Diagnostics of sources of disturbances and distribution of vibrations over the width of a tape in tape-feed mechanisms

Disturbances created by certain assemblies and components of tape-feed mechanisms (TFM) and acting on a moving magnetic tape are studied. The method, based on elements of digital logic, is established by stress-strain diagrams of the longitudinal deformations and vibrations across the width of a magnetic tape. Experimental studies were carried out for determination of the functional relationships of longitudinal deformations in a section of magnetic tape to the magnitude of roller play, tension vibrations rate of movement, and elasticity of magnetic tapes. A block diagram of the measurements is shown. Appropriate digital computer algorithms and programs were proposed for statistical analysis of the data obtained. Estimates of the mathematical expectation, dispersion, intercorrelation function, energy spectral density, and distribution pattern of the random process values were calculated.

Diagnostics of the technical condition of antifriction bearings

Shock pulse measurements that express the characteristic curves of rotational bearing resistance are used to diagnose possible deficiencies. Spectral analysis of frequency vibration tracings establishes probable causes for various anomalies in the geometric shape, surface frequency, contamination, etc.

Diagnostics of load vibrations at the inlet of a mechanism

The torque of a drive shaft in a magnetic recording device was studied by oscillographic recordings. Statistical evaluation of the dynamic spectral densities showed that the principle source of disturbing forces is loading in the drive shaft radial play.

A use of regression analysis in acoustical diagnostics of gear drives

A study is presented of components of the vibration spectrum as the filtered first and second harmonics of the tooth frequency which permits information to be obtained on the physical characteristics of the vibration excitation process, and an approach to be made to comparison of models of the gearing. Regression analysis of two random processes has shown a strong dependence of the second harmonic on the first, and independence of the first from the second. The nature of change in the regression line, with change in loading moment, gives rise to the idea of a variable phase shift between the first and second harmonics.
